Homily for Jan. 22, 20173rd Sunday in Ordinary TimeToday we hear Isaiah (8:23) “land of Zebulon, land of Naphtali, are degraded.those have walked in darkness”In Matthew’s Gospel, we hear the same reference: “Land of Zebulun.and of Naphtali, the people who sit in darkness.” (Matthew 4:14) The lands of Naphtali and Zebulun are northern Israel and southern Syria today. Isaiah cold havebeen making a reference to the Assyrian invasion—about 700 years before Christ. 2,700 years ago the Assyrians were asvicious as the Nazis.anyone that resisted was destroyed—males were killed, females sold as slaves. In the Gospel of Matthew, written to the Romans after the fall of Jerusalem in 70 AD, parallels could be seen—the Roman army had leveled the Zebulun-Naphtali area—Galilee, to put down the Jewish revolt that started in 66 AD.So darkness is a good symbol—But I don’t want to talk about the civil war in Syria, dark as it is in that area.I want to talk about a darkness here at home—a darkness the media doesn’t cover but ought to that darkness is drugabuse.First and foremost, drug abuse destroys the most important part of being human—the consciousness. Yet howmany of you have been thankful for being conscious? Last week or ever? We take it for granted. Yet without consciousness, what would we as individuals have? Say the person was a millionaire but didn’t have his consciousness, whatwould he have? And part of the importance of consciousness is the human decision making ability—how many decisions do youmake a day? Simply coming here to church by driving your car, you made how many turns? Each a decision! In a study by the National Institute on Drug Abuse ch 1, from 2002 to 2015, traffic accident deaths were down, but in 2015 there were 35,092 deaths. In 2015 there were over 50,000 deaths from drug overdose and that is a 2.2 foldincrease from 2002 or 220% increase. Murders by guns were 12,000.We need to move toward the Light: Isaiah is talking about faithfulness to God. Matthew is talking about Jesusand His Gospel. There is a walk, a simple way to move to that Light.to strengthen our decision making ability andbroaden our consciousness—it is based on building a prayer life. There is an ancient Catholic document written in the 200s called the Teachings of the 12 Apostles or Didache(until 300 AD the Church of Rome spoke Greek not Latin.) One of the first things said is to Pray the Our Father 3 timesa day—so think morning, noon and evening. Pray it slowly—think about what is being said. Our Father-God, your willbe done. Too often we are thinking of our will—what we want and frequently when people think only of what they wantthat is when trouble starts Like Isaiah and Matthew’s Gospel, the teaching of the 12 apostles is a light versus darkness choice. If we addsaying a prayer of thanksgiving before each meal, our prayer life should build up a feeling of thankfulness in us, towardnot only the God who gives us our daily bread, but also makes us like Himself—aware, able to know—.Back to the murder rate by guns—how many of those killings came from being unforgiving—people have notlistened to the petition “forgive us as we forgive those who have trespassed against us.”Point 2 in the teaching of the 12 apostles—Fasting—in those times they thought eating red meat encouraged passions—think anger, lust. I hear the story told of an American Indian man talking to a youth.it is like we have 2 wolvesinside, a good wolf and an evil one—the one that dominates is the one we feed. Fasting—starve the temptation to evil—we all have our particular temptation—fast, starve the temptation to evil, feed the virtue.Point 3 If the Bible is somehow God communicating with us, then we ought to read it. St. Benedict (lived about400 AD) said to take a passage and read it 4 times. First-to know ‘facts’. For example, Adam and Eve ate the forbiddenfruit-an apple is never mentioned. Second reading, ask what God could be saying to you. Third— what is my reaction tothe text? Fourth—read it silently with God.Abraham Lincoln read and prayed the Scripture. His greatness flows from the Scripture reading—usually afterhis breakfast for 15 minutes or so. (Lincoln’s Battle with God by Stephen Mansfield p. 153)Next, attend Mass—we are social and our faith is communal—at Mass we are with others, others we need torecognize when making decisions—our bad decisions hurt the people we love and who love us—Come to Mass to buildup our commitment and to be strengthened by God and the people of God.Lastly, in our simple spiritual walk, in our effort to be in the Light, develop a love of beauty. Some of you wentto Rome—you saw St. Peter’s and there you saw the Pieta, Michelangelo’s statue of Mary holding Jesus after He hadbeen taken down from the Cross. Pick your own artist—I like John Audubon and his water colors of American birds-Ilike Norman Rockwell, the American illustrator. In appreciating beauty, be it as simple as looking at a Rose—you beginto appreciate a wonder of the Creator and have you not felt peace while looking at beauty—like a sunset, a rose, whatever? By practicing a spirituality-simple as this one is, we become God’s light in the darkness, and maybe we can movesomeone else not to abuse drugs. At the rate things are going each of us will know someone who will die of an overdosein the next 10 years.Today, be a person of light.Fr. Mark
