DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S REPORTPreschool Enhancement ProgramThis term our preschool environment will be having a much needed facelift. RESULTS OF THE SCHOOL STUDENT SURVEYKindergartenThe majority of Early stage 1 students enjoy playing outside during recess and lunch.Favourite sports include bike club, hula hoops, sandpit, soccer, handball, fixedequipment and basketball. Students enjoyed going to the library, computer roomand playing lego. Early stage one students would like to see more group games likedoggy, doggy, where’s my bone and duck, duck, goose. Students felt that talking to ateacher, playing lego and writing feelings down helped them to make better choicesand calm down.Stage 175% Stage 1 students enjoy playing outside during recess and lunch. Favourite sportsinclude soccer, touch football, fixed equipment, basketball, handball, bike club andhula hoops. Students enjoyed going to the library and computer room at lunch whenchoosing to be indoors. Stage one students would like to participate in fitnessactivities, art activities and cricket as options during break times. They also would likemore fun games like tug of war and their own soccer field and an obstacle course.50% of students felt that reflection did not assist them in making better choices.Students felt that talking to a teacher, going to time out, doing jobs and missing outon playtime helped them to make better choices.Stage 265% of Stage 2 students enjoy playing outside during recess and lunch. Favouritesports include soccer, fixed equipment, handball, bike club and hula hoops. Studentsenjoyed going to the library, computer room, maths club and lego club. Stage twostudents would like to participate in fitness activities, art activities and cricket asoptions during break times. They also would like more fun games like capture the flagand poison ball. 85% of students felt that reflection assisted them in making betterchoices. Students felt that talking to a teacher, going to time out, doing jobs andmissing out on playtime helped them to make better choices.Stage 375% of stage 3 students enjoy playing outside during recess and lunch. Favouritesports include soccer, netball and handball. Students enjoyed going to the library andthe computer room. Stage three students would like to participate in fitness and artactivities as options during break times. They also would like more sports games,tournaments and clubs. 75% of students felt that reflection assisted them in makingbetter choices. Students felt that talking to a teacher, going to time out and doingjobs helped them to make better choices.

FROM THE FRONT OFFICEMedicationPlease be advised if you require office staff to give your child prescribed medication for ashort term period we will need the following: A signed and written letter from the parent. The letter must clearly state the amount of medication eg: 5 ml of liquid or 1 tablet. The letter must also state the required time the child is to take the medication.If your child needs on going medication then we will need a healthcare plan from yourGP. Please see office staff if you require more information.Preschool FeesPreschool fees are now due. Payments can be made in person at the counter or onlinevia the school website.Note: Should you not be in a position to pay please contact the school.

TERM OVERVIEW – EARLY STAGE 1ENGLISHMATHEMATICSSCIENCE &DIGITALTECHNOLOGIESHISTORY /GEOGRAPHYCREATIVE ARTSPDHPEReading: Each week the class teacher will be reading with your child on atleast 3 separate occasions. Students will be put into groups of three to readwith the teacher based upon their ability. We encourage children to readat home and parents to read to children on a regular basis. Students willbe learning to read more complex books with our main focus on teachingstudents to use decoding skills when reading. Writing: Students will be learning to put their thoughts into interestingsentences. Teachers will be focusing on building the student’s ability towrite down what they are thinking. Our main focus will be rereadingwritten texts to ensure student’s writing looks right and makes sense. Whole number: Count, order, read and represent numbers to 30. Addition/Subtraction: Combines, separates and compares groups ofobjects. Patterns and Algebra: Recognise, describe and repeat a pattern. 3D Space: Sort and describe different 3D shapes. Fractions and Decimals: Describes two equal parts as halves. Data: Represent and interpret data. Position: Basic directions and orientations Volume and Capacity: Describes and compares the capacities ofcontainers and volumes of objectsLiving things: Students will describe what plants and animals, including humans,need to stay alive and healthy and identify the needs of a variety of living things ina range of situations. Excursion: Kindergarten students will go on an excursion to Calmsley HillFarm in week 7 to consolidate this learning.Students share experiences of family, school and local events that are celebratedor observed. We will identify and record a variety of holidays and special eventscelebrated in Australia and other countries.Dance: Students will participate in dance activities and demonstrate anawareness of body parts, control over movement and expressive qualities. Allstudents will participate in a dance on Performance Day.Students will be learning about Road Safety through the online program SafetyTown. Students will learn about how to be pedestrian safe, safe while travelling inthe car and how to be safe while riding a bike/scooter. LibraryEach Kindergarten class has a library lesson once a week. Students will need a library bag toborrow a book from the library. Library bags can be purchased from the Library for 2 each.Home readingFor homework, students are encouraged to borrow books from our home reading room locatedin the hub. Home reading is open every day 8.30am to 8.50am. Parents are encouraged to taketheir child to the home reading room to borrow books. Kindergarten students can ask theirteachers for their reading level. Kindergarten teachers have access to what books your child isreading and will inform you when they are ready to move up a reading level. Home reading is alsoa part of your child’s school report.If you have any concerns then please make an appointment to see Assistant Principal Ms Pedanoor the classroom teacher.

TERM OVERVIEW – STAGE 1ENGLISH /HISTORYMATHEMATICSSCIENCE &DIGITALTECHNOLOGIESCREATIVE ARTSPDHPELibraryThis term, English and History has been integrated to provide a context for the learning.The topic is ‘Stepping back in time’. Students will engage in lessons that allow them toexplore the past in their local area and consider how it has changed over time. Studentswill examine how technology has improved our lives over time and consider how it haschanged over time. Some things you can do at home with your child include: View and compose simple timelines showing the history of our local area Identify, compare and report on features of objects and technology from the pastand present. Choose a figure from an historical photograph of the local area and pose questionsthey would ask that character about their life. What answer may that characterprovide? Research information on a local historical building or monument (eg The Manse),and explain why it should be conserved for future generations. Why is it important?This term, students will be learning about the following mathematical concepts:Whole Number Addition and Subtraction Multiplication and Division Fractions and DecimalsMeasurement and Geometry 3D Space Position Length Time Data ChanceThis term, ‘Digital Technologies’ and ‘Earth and Space’ will be taught. Students will: Identify the Earth's resources, including water, soil and minerals and describe howthey are used in a variety of ways. They will learn to recognise why and how we should care for the environment andour natural resources. Students will plan and implement strategies considering the conservation ofresources to address sustainability and to meet our needs. Scientific thinking skills will be developed and elements of digital technology,human endeavours and design and production skills will be incorporated into thelessons.This term, students will be learning about Dance. Some of the skills that students will belearning are: Developing knowledge, skills and understanding in creating their own dancesusing the elements of dance and in performing their own dances and the dancesof others from different times and cultures. Developing knowledge, skills and understanding in appreciating their own dancesand those of others.Stage 1 students will use this knowledge of dance to help them with their end of yearperformance.This term, students will be learning about Road Safety and partaking in Gymnastics.Students will: Explore how to make safe choices when travelling and identify factors that showsafe road crossing behaviours. Be participating in gymnastics activities. They will be following and repeatingsimple movement skills with a variety of equipment.Please ensure that you confirm your child’s library day this term to return and borrow books .This term inlibrary time, students will learn about Aboriginal perspectives and living with the land.General noticesParents will receive school reports for semester 2 on Friday, 6th December. Students will learn to express their thoughts and opinions whilecomposing a variety of informative and imaginative texts. Writing: Students will be working on planning, composing, reviewing andpublishing a range of texts in order to inform the audience. Students willbe aiming to write engaging and creative texts, using complex sentenceswith evidence of simple punctuation. Fractions and Decimals Multiplication and Division Addition and Subtraction Patterns and Algebra Volume and Capacity Area Time 3D ShapesStudents will be exploring Earth and Space and will investigate the way the Earthrotates and the features of the sun, moon and Earth. Students will also explorehow the movements and positions of the Sun, Moon and Earth affect seasons andtime across the world.Students will be investigating the early years of European (British) settlement inAustralia. They will study the reasons behind the establishment of the Sydneycolony, the First Fleet journey, and what life was like for the early colonists.Students will explore the different forms of early contact between Aboriginal andTorres Strait Islander Peoples and early traders, explorers and settlers.Students will be studying dance in Term 3, where they will develop knowledge,skills and understanding relating to the elements of dance. Students willcollaboratively dance in groups and individually when creating sequences dancemovements. Students will also be actively engaging in dance forms from othercultures and will appreciate the dance performances of others.Students will be learning about safety strategies during health lessons in Term 4.In these lessons, students will learn safety strategies regarding road, bike, waterand sun safety. Students will discuss safe and unsafe situations and how torespond accordingly. During PE lessons, students will be learning fundamentaltennis skills. Lessons will involve racquets skills, serving techniques and acombination of individual and double competition. Teachers and Professional DevelopmentThroughout the year teachers will be attending professional development. In writing, we are focusing on creating quality informative andimaginative texts. We will composing texts for a range of audiences and fordifferent purposes. In addition to this, students will be looking at all aspects of theEnglish syllabus through all key learning areas.This term we will cover these topics from the Number and Algebra strand: Fractions and Decimals Multiplication and Division Addition and Subtractionfrom the Measurement and Geometry strand: Angles Volume and Capacity Timeand from the Statistics and Probability strand: Chance DataWe will also be exploring a unit of work related to Earth and Space where we willinvestigate the questions:‘How does the Earth compare to other planets in the solar system?’‘How do sudden geological changes and extreme weather events affect theEarth’s surface?’In Geography this term, we will be exploring a Diverse and Connected World andresearch the questions regarding:‘How do people and environments affect each other?’Students will investigate how people change the natural environment, both inAustralia and globally. GALA DAYOur annual Gala Day was held at the end of Term 3 and it was a fun day for all. This yearwe had more inflatables including a giant “Hungry Hippos” game as well as a giantobstacle course. The inflatables are always popular, and once again, everyone had a greattime.

GALA DAYThere were lots of games and activities this year but we also introduced some new ones.This included the return of the “Haunted House” – a terrifying experience but enjoyed byeveryone.

GALA DAYWe would like to thank Bunnings for the donation of the face painting stall. Thank youalso to Chifley College Mount Druitt for their continued support and the hard work by thestudent volunteers on the day. We would especially like to thank our Fundraising Teamfor their support as well as all the teachers, school staff and students. There was lots offood, fun and laughter – once again, Gala Day was a huge success. Thank you, MountDruitt.

INTERNATIONAL DAYOn Friday the 27th September, Mount Druitt Public School celebrated International Day.It was an amazing day for our students and our community! The students had so muchfun participating in craft and activities from all over the world which was followed by anassembly where there were some spectacular performances! We were also luckyenough to have the group ‘No Name Bhangra’ come and perform for us on the day.
