Small Tool Instruments and Data ManagementGauge BlocksCATALOG No. E4092-516Standard of Accuracy

Precision gauge blocks are the primary standards vitalto dimensional quality control in the manufacture ofparts. Mitutoyo offers a complete selection of gaugeblocks available in a choice of rectangular or square, metric or inch and steel or CERA (ceramic) types.Mitutoyo CERA Blocks are some of the finest gaugeblocks available anywhere in the world. Steel gauge2

blocks are made of a special steel alloy, while CERABlocks are made of zirconia ceramic. Both types areprepared by highly advanced techniques in the mostmodern facilities to produce the fine characteristicsrequired of gauge blocks. Tungsten carbide gaugeblocks have the advantage of being harder and morewear resistant than steel.CONTENTSMitutoyo Miyazaki Plant.4NKO (Netherlands) Accredited Body.5Mitutoyo Gauge Blocks and Length StandardTraceability System.6Features of Mitutoyo CERA Block.7Features of Square Gauge Blocks.8Tungsten Carbide Gauge Blocks.8Selecting Gauge Blocks.8Grade and Applications.9Combination of a Required Length.9Accuracies of Mitutoyo Gauge Blocks.10Mitutoyo Gauge Blocks and Inspection Certificates.11Rectangular Gauge Blocks.12-28Metric Rectangular Gauge Block Sets1mm Base Sets (Standard Sets).12,142mm Base Sets (Standard Sets).140.001mm Step Block Sets.16Thin Block Sets.16Long Block Sets.16Wear Block Sets.16Gauge Block Sets for Micrometer Inspection.18Gauge Block Sets for Caliper Inspection.183Inch Rectangular Gauge Block SetsStandard Sets.20Thin Block Sets.21Long Block Sets.21Wear Block Sets.21Gauge Block Sets for Micrometer Inspection.21Metric Rectangular Gauge Blocks (Individual).22Inch Rectangular Gauge Blocks (Individual).24Accessories for Rectangular Gauge Blocks.26Square Gauge Blocks.29-36Metric Square Gauge Block SetsStandard Sets.29Long Block Sets.30Wear Block Sets.30Inch Square Gauge Block SetsStandard Sets.31Long Block Sets.31Wear Block Sets.31Metric Square Gauge Blocks (Individual).32Inch Square Gauge Blocks (Individual).33Accessories for Square Gauge Blocks.35Optical Flats.36Gauge Block Maintenance Kit.37Micrometer Checker.37Ceraston.37GBI Gauge Block Interferometer.38GBCD-100A Gauge Block Comparator.38GBCD-250 Gauge Block Comparator.39GBCS-250 Gauge Block Comparator.39Gauge Block Sets with NKO Certificate.40

Mitutoyo Miyazaki PlantThe Miyazaki Plant is located in Tano-cho in the Miyazaki Sun Technopolisand began operation as Miyazaki Mitutoyo Precision Co., Ltd. in 1985. Theplant is dedicated itself to the production of gauge blocks, the referenceof precision measurement, and their applied gages. It prides itself on areputation for quality and accuracy both in Japan and overseas. Far restingon its laurel, however, the plant is driven by a sense of a mission to continueto “contribute to society through precision measurement. “In October1985, the Miyazaki Plant began operating, integrating the productionof gauge blocks (the length standard and the basis to the traceability ofall Mitutoyo products) and the production of Height Master (the gaugeblock applied instrument). The Miyazaki Plant is now working to furtherimprove the ultra precision machining /engineering expertise which hasbeen accumulated over the years. The development of “CERA Blocks”or ceramic gauge blocks, and digital Height Master, etc. is one of theresults of our challenge toward the production of high-tech products.Company outlineFoundation: October 1985Number of employees: 85Total site area: 44,000m2Floor area of buildings: 7,400m2Underground measurement laboratories: Total area/161m2Maintained temperature: 20 C to 0.5 CLight wave interferometer: Mitutoyo model, 1000mm( 0.1μm) Zeiss model, 100mm ( 0.02μm) Major productsGauge blocks: Rectangular and square types of gaugeblocks. Features of Mitutoyo CERA Block1. Corrosion-ResistantSteel gauge blocks are made of high-chromiun steel, which is similar to stainless steel in its resistance tocorrosion. They must, however, be carefully cleanedafter use, stored in a dry environment and be protectedfrom corrosion. The CERA Block is made from zirconium-basedceramic which will not corrode unless subjected to themost corrosive chemicals. Anti-corrosion treatment isnot required when handled normally (i.e. with fingers),resulting in simple maintenance and storage.3. Abrasion Resistant2. Closest Expansion Coefficient to SteelThe thermal expansion coefficient of a CERA Block is quitesimilar to that of a steel gauge block.Material CERA BlockProperty(ZrO2)Hardness (HV)1350Coefficient of thermal9.3 0.5expansion (10-6/K)Flexural strength by 3-point1275bending (MPa)Fracture toughness K1c7(MPa·m1/2 )Young’s modulus x104 (MPa)20.6Poisson’s ratio0.3Specific gravity6.0Thermal conductivity (W/m·k)2.9800Carbide(WC-Co)1650Silicon nitride(Si3N4)150010.8 0.55.5 528.40.23.216.7Steel (Fe)Abrasion lossCERA Blocks have 10 times the abrasion resistance of steelgauge blocks.(µm)SteelResistance to wear0.4Silicon nitrideTungstencarbide0.2CERA Block02000400060008000Amount of travel (m)4. No Burrs Caused by Dents, etc.Since the CERA Block is very hard, it will not scratch and ishighly resistant to burrs. If a burr is formed, it can easily beremoved with a ceramic deburring stone (Ceraston).CERA Block1920212223 Temperature ( C)7. Features of Square Gauge Blocks1. Perfect wringing is possibleusing the center hole. After wringing the squaregauge blocks, an optionaltie rod can be insertedthrough the center holeto fix the blocks using ascrew.2. A height reference standard caneasily be made.A precision height referencestandard can be made easilyand inexpensively usingaccessories such as the plainjaw and block base.3. A dedicated inspection jig canbe easily be made.A dedicated inspection jig for periodic inspection ofinstruments can be made easily and inexpensively.4. A wide measuring surface withcross section dimensions of[24.1x24.1mm] is available.Tungsten Carbide GaugeBlocks for Wear ResistanceWhen used in accordance withaccepted practices, steel gauge blockswill provide many years of usefullife and still retain an acceptabledegree of precision. Where a highsurface hardness is required, however, tungsten carbide gauge blocks areoften selected to provide increased lifecompared to steel blocks.Selecting Gauge Blocks Select gauge blocks in accordance with the combinationrange required. If a large length is required, add a longblock set. Select gauge blocks in accordance with the minimum lengthstep required. Add wear block sets if necessary. If a set containing a large number of gauge blocks isselected, the number of combination gauge blocks requiredfor a length is reduced and the number of combinations isincreased. The accuracy will be retained and damage will bereduced. The specific gauge block set for micrometer inspection andcaliper inspection is available. If using only one length repeatedly, it is a good idea topurchase discrete gauge blocks. The 2mm-based gauge blocks, which take the base of theminimum length step as 2mm, are easy to handle and willnot warp, as compared to the 1mm-based gauge blocks.A square gauge block can retain stable orientation bothlongitudinally and laterally. A wide range of applicationmeasurements can be made, including cuttingtool positioning, anglemeasurement with a sinebar, taper measurementwith a roller, and inspectionof depth micrometers.11
