Adult Faith FormationAROUND FOR AWHILE By, Fr. Ed UptonFor many years Religious Education classeswere held in District 135schools; each sessionbegan with the childrengathered in the cafeteria.I remember beforeleading prayer, prayingsilently that somedaywe would have a moreconducive place topray. This was done for tworeasons. First, the children were not allowed towalk to a classroom unattended; so they gathered in the cafeteria withtheir catechist and thenproceed to their individual rooms when all werepresent and prayer completed. So, when the Centerwas being planned, including a chapel wasa goal. While wewanted this to be a“Children’sChapel”,we also realized that itwould be used by others; we wanted tomaintain design elements that would beappropriate for multipleuse and participants.Secondly, this gatheringprovided the opportunityto begin each sessionwith communal prayer. Areading from Scripture, afew words of reflection, and then shared prayer. This prayer time, brief asit was, was a challengebecause we were in acafeteria. At times, the portablesound system did notwork, the lunch bencheswhere the children satwere awkward, and theenvironment was notconducive for prayer.8While an elevator is inthe building, the ordinary entrance to thechapel is reached byusing the stairs. Thestaircase was deliberately designed to bethe focal point of theentrance; the stairs arebeautifully designed;and clearly indicatethey lead to an important place. In the first floor entrance, under the staircase, there is a largeST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI PARISH, ORLAND PARK“planter”. This holds liveplants, a real tree and awater feature. This treeis the “tree of life”, reminding all who enterthat what takes place inthis building brings life.As the development ofthe chapel was discussed and planned,“tree of life” became atheme for the chapel. When you arrive at thelanding on the secondfloor, and, if turn around, you will see a beautifulicon, painted just for ourspace, hanging on thewall. And, of course, most visible on the downwalk. The artist, Joe Melham,is a professional iconographer who has a studio at St. Gregory theGreat Parish, Chicago. He visited the space toacquire an understanding of the space.Since there is a skylightover the stairs, the iconof Jesus is clearly visible. This image of Jesus isone of a number of religious images placed06/10/18

around the Center to create a religious atmosphere and to remind thechildren of the many dimensions of faith.and ambo; a tabernacle and a room for privatereconciliation.Stations of the Crossare on the walls. Astatue of the BlessedVirgin is also in the sanctuary. There is a smallelectronic organ and aset of hand bells. The entrance to thechapel is delineated bytwo flowing holy waterfonts. These are placedat the door for an obvious reason: to teach andremind the children oftheir Baptism and tomake the sign of thecross as they enter andleave the chapel. The chapel itself is elliptical in shape; with chairs. The chapel has an altarPROMISESToday's liturgy is full of promises. The reading from Genesis promises afinal triumph over the power of sin and a return to a new creation. Thereading from Second Corinthians promises that all who follow Christ willhave to struggle. It also promises, however, that we can persevere if webut recognize that Christ is within us, renewing us daily, and giving usthe courage and the strength we need to endure. The Gospel promisesthat doing God's will makes us "family" with Jesus, who forgives all sinand triumphs over evil.Today might be a good day for us to make some promises as well. Wecan promise to stop kidding ourselves about our own tendencies to selfishness and sin. We can promise ourselves to believe--really believe-that while we are not sinless, we are forgiven. We can promise ourselves to combat evil and sin by acting as sisters and brothers not onlyto the Lord, but to one another as well.Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.06/10/18ST. For some ofour parishioners, this is farfrom the truth. If we peek behind the closeddoors into the home of someone with an incapacitating illness, terminal disease or dementia,we get a glimpse of the challenges existing notonly for the patient but also for the caregiver. It truly is a challenge for caregivers to help theirloved ones navigate a life filled with highs andlows all the while seeking to maintain compassion and tenderness and good self care.On Monday, July 9th, a Caregiver Support groupis beginning at St. Francis. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITIONThe cathedral is atreasure in a dioceseand in our tradition. Itis not simply a "bigchurch," as some say;some parish churchesare larger. Whatmakes a cathedral isthe presence of thechair, called a cathedra (Latin for seat)reserved for the bishop. There are many instances in our countryof a local church(diocese) outgrowinga cathedral. In Baltimore and St. Louis, the former cathedralsare historic treasures in the heart ofthe old city, but newand larger structures now functionas the seat of thebishop. When a bishop diesor retires, it is saidthat "the seat is vacant," and when thenew bishop is installed, the centralritual is the momentwhen the decree ofthe Holy Father isread and the newbishop is escortedto the cathedra. Noone but the bishopsits in the cathedraduring a ritual, but inLos Angeles the cathedra in the Cathedral of Our Lady ofthe Angels is accessible, and no oneseems to mind whena visitor tries the cathedra out for thebishop's point ofview.--Rev. SCHOOL OF NURSING HISTORY St. Francis Medical Center School of Nursing has been educating nurses for over100 years. In 1905 when nursing schools were still a brand new idea in America, the Third Order of the Sisters of St. Francis received a charter from the State of New Jersey to establish a "TRAINING SCHOOL FOR NURSES OF SAINT FRANCIS HOSPITAL."
