Fourth Sunday of LentMarch 11, 2018Our Pastor’s LetterRelicsYou will notice that we have placed a number of relics to the right as you enter theChurch. Why do Catholics venerate relics? The Church is not dualistic believing thatmatter is bad and spirit is good. This Gnostic heresy believes that salvation consists ofescaping the physical world, which is evil, to exist in the spiritual world which is good.Instead, the Catholic position teaches that the material world was created by God and isgood. It is true that the world is fallen, but essentially it still remains good. With theincarnation, God took on human flesh. Jesus is truly God and truly man. Divinity hasbeen united with humanity. The saints are people who have participated with God in a concrete way. God istruly present in the lives of the saints in a way that others can experience. We believe that in heaven we willhave a glorified body like Jesus. The body is holy because we are body and soul and both participate insalvation. In addition, the saints are very much connected to us. They continue to intercede for us and are able todo much more now than when they were on the earth. Two of the saints in our reliquary are well-known and two are not. St. Francis of Assisi was born in1181/1182. He was a friar, deacon and preacher. He founded the men’s Order of Friars minor, the women’sorder of St. Clare, the Third Order of St. Francis and the Custody of the Holy Land. He lived a life of Gospelsimplicity which attracted many followers. In 1219 he tried to convert the Sultan of Egypt during the time of theFifth Crusade. In 1224 he received the stigmata, and he died in 1226.St. Vincent de Paul was born in 1581. He was ordained a priest in 1600. In 1605 he was taken captiveby Barbary pirates and sold as a slave. He was sold to three different masters, the third being a former priestwho had converted to Islam to gain his freedom. This man became remorseful and escaped back to France withhis slave. Vincent was a parish priest, and in 1617 he founded the “Ladies of Charity”, wealthy women whohelped with different religious projects. He was the leader of the Vincentians and died in 1660. The Society of St.Vincent de Paul, dedicated to the service of the poor, was established in 1833.St. Sturm was born in 705 in Austria. He met and joined St. Boniface and was educated in theBenedictine monastery of Fritzlar. In 740 he was ordained a priest and Boniface placed him as the first abbot ofthe Fulda monastery. He died in 799.St. Leoba was trained by abbess Eadburg at Minster. Archbishop Boniface asked her to help him tospread Christianity in Germany. She arrived in Germany in 748. She became the abbess of a convent in aFranconian town. In 754 when Boniface left for a missionary trip to Frisia, she was his delegate in his absence.Bishops in Fulda consulted her and she was a friend of Hildegard, the wife of Charlemagne. She died in 782.Several miracles have been attributed to Leoba both during her life and her death.Let us ask these saints to intercede for us that we may fulfill the mission God has for us.God bless,BE INSPIRED!2018 Lent Speaker SeriesAnthony Gallegos, March 13 at 7 pm in Jubilee HallTransversing the Desert: Dealing with Dryness, Distractions and Demonic Dust BunniesAnthony Gallegos is a native of Denver where he resides with his beloved wife and children. The Irish Celts werefocused on the God of Creation so today’s topic willbe the Cosmic Christ. The very first manifestation ofGod is in creation. Some people would say that Godis incarnate in creation. Nicolas of Cusa says that thedivine enfolds the universe. Duality does not havemuch place in this view of God and creation. With theAnnunciation, the Divine enters humanity in a uniqueway and honors humanness. Faith is first, a love forAll, a Cosmic Love. We journey on this spiritual pathfrom ego-centeredness to a cosmic-center of union. It does not mean we are all the same. Not everyoneis Irish, but that we are all One.We hope to have special treats with a green look tothem. You are invited to wear green to celebrate theday, but it is optional. The coffee will not be green, but maybe green tea!Saturday March 17th from 9 am to 12 pmJubilee HallA free-will offering is most welcome. There will be a20 minute silent mediation to conclude the morning.
