“Magic - The power of apparently influencingevents by using mysterious or supernaturalforces.” Oxford DictionaryOriginally, I thought this exhibition would be aboutstage magicians or ghosts, people creatingsomething out of nothing, but as I worked, I soonrealized the paintings were actually about creativity. The juxtaposition of the real and the imagined hasalways been present in my work.I am excited by this new suite of paintings whichexplores this rich theme with deeper knowledgeand experience.“Those who dream by day are cognizant of manythings which escape those who dream only bynight.” Edgar Allen PoeAs a sensitive only child, whose only real interestswere Art and Literature, I have always livedpartly in the realm of fantasy, needing time onmy own. We all live in the coinciding worlds ofour imagination and the everyday with its emails, electricity bills and supermarkets. As an artistthis is particularly true. You must be able to enteryour own labyrinth of infinite possibilities, yet notget lost in there, and never fully lose hold of thestring that will lead you back out. Ideas appear tocome “out of thin air” but they are the result andreward from years of work and linking seeminglyunconnected concepts in different ways, memory, play and experimentation. It is impossible to createsomething new without daring to explore unfamiliarterritory and taking risks. This exhibition is comprised of major oil paintings,as well as, a collection of small framed work whichare like vignettes or private fragments of poetry.I bought most of these antique frames from fleamarkets in Paris. They are like artifacts, full ofpoignant unknown histories, silent and resonant.Perhaps once a much loved picture on someone’swall, a wedding gift, a family heirloom, a secrettreasure. I have added a new narrative while stillretaining a feeling of mystery and possibilities. The suite of large oil paintings depict someonewhose inner life is made visible, surrounding themwith open ended dream like images. The paintingsare simultaneously about past and future, theinvisible and tangible. There are no limits to thepossible meanings of each painting. There is noone answer. I am not interested in the obviousor straight forward, these paintings are notprescriptive or illustrational. The viewer is invitedto bring their own interpretation. There are endlesspossibilities, like creativity itself.“The job of the artist is to deepen the mystery.”Francis BaconWendy Sharpe, August 2020The book of recurring dreams 2020 oil on linen 125 x 125 cm67
