Brothers,On behalf of the Nominations Committee, I am pleased to provide the 2017 ElectionsNewsletter. This Elections Newsletter is published pursuant to Section 3.708 of the NationalConstitution. Though an Elections Newsletter has been published for more than 20 years, this year it is part of a newly revised nominations process that was approved by the NationalChapter at the 2015 National Convention. The entire nominations process will be completedprior to the National Convention, with a slate published and promulgated at least 30 days priorto the start of the convention. The slate will be accompanied by a report from the NominationsCommittee explaining the basis for the slating decisions. Look for the slate and report on theNational Convention website, as well as other Kappa Kappa Psi sites. This Elections Newsletter was prepared by the National Headquarters staff from informationprovided by the candidates. Please take time to review it and familiarize yourself with thecandidates for national office. Other information, including promotional videos for eachcandidate, will be posted to this and other websites for your information and education. If youhave questions or wish to reach out to candidates, please do so by following up via their contactinformation. You will note that there is only one candidate for National President, Evan Thompson, thecurrent VPCM. According to the National Constitution, the VPCM automatically succeeds tothe Office of National President with a simple majority vote of the National Chapter. You will also note that no candidates submitted nominations materials for Vice Presidentfor Student Affairs. While this is unusual, it is not a constitutional crisis. The NominationsCommittee has the authority to slate candidates wherever it feels is best. A number ofcandidates have indicated a willingness to be considered for offices other than their primarychoice. In addition, the Constitution offers other options to address vacancies in office at theclose of the convention.I hope you find this information helpful and enlightening. If you have any questions about thenominations process, please don’t hesitate to contact me, or NHQ staff. Please make your plansnow to attend National Convention in Orlando, July 18-22, where important decisions affectingKappa Kappa Psi, including the selection of national officers, will be made.Fraternally yours,Chris Haughee, ChairmanNominations CommitteeKKΨ Elections Newsletter - 3

Evan is a Life Memberof Kappa Kappa Psi, Tau Beta Sigma, and the University of South Carolina Alumni Association. It is with excitement and hope that Ipresent myself as a candidate for theoffice of National President of KappaKappa Psi for the 2017-2019 biennium. My life was forever changed in 2006 whenI became a brother of this Fraternity. Theexperiences and people of Kappa KappaPsi have shaped my life and made meinto the person I am today. The historyand traditions of the Fraternity continueto inspire me, and it is through thisinspiration of Bohumil Makovsky, WilliamA. Scroggs, and A. Frank Martin that wewill exemplify The Founders’ Spirit. Withthe help of all active members, alumni, leadership, sponsors, and directors, I knowwe will continue to lead college/universitybands by the examples of our incredibleFounders. I am ready to serve as yourNational President. It would be the honorof a lifetime to lead this organization, advocate on its behalf, and advance ourvision, mission, and values. As we approach our 100th Anniversary andCentennial Celebration, there has neverbeen a more exciting time to be affiliatedwith Kappa Kappa Psi and embody TheFounders’ Spirit. Our membership is atits highest levels ever, and enthusiasmfor our brand is evident throughout thenation. The National Council has takensteps to bring Kappa Kappa Psi into the21st Century by updating many of ourprograms and procedures to reflect theneeds of active members, sponsors, and directors. Our chapters continue topresent impressive service projects andmusical activities that promote our valuesand advance high quality musicianshipand service to bands. My own work withmany student leaders has revealed anintense passion for Kappa Kappa Psi andpresent remarkable maturity in the faceof adversity. We have much to be proudof as members of Kappa Kappa Psi, andmy goal is to celebrate that excitementand see commitment continue into ourCentennial. There is an old Japanese riddle: “Whomust do the difficult things?” Answer:“Those who can.” I know this is a value wehold true within the college band world,KKΨ Elections Newsletter - 4and this is indeed the type of attitudethat was reflected by our Founders. KappaKappa Psi continues to be the leader onmany important issues including hazing, values, and leadership. As we reflect on100 years of our existence, it is imperativethat we continue to shape our identitywithin the college band movement as anadvocate for bands and band music, anda leader within the band world knownfor a cultivating culture of excellence. Incelebrating 100 years as a Fraternity, let uslook to our past for inspiration and live bythe example of The Founders’ Spirit.Bohumil Makovsky is the Guiding Spiritof Kappa Kappa Psi. He strongly supportedthe creation and development of KappaKappa Psi as a fraternal organization thatfostered the development of better musicand recognized the value of dedicatedleadership. Boh was a teacher, fatherfigure, brother, mentor, and friend to hisstudents. One quote about Boh says, “Hecame to A&M College to direct the bandbut we found that he was building men!”This spirit of building up people wasexhibited by Boh in his relationships withhis colleagues and students. This personalfellowship became the guide by which allfraternal activities would be founded. Thatspirit will continue to guide us in this nextbiennium in the form of the followinggoals:- Membership Development: Wewill continue the work of the NationalCurriculum Development Committee aswe revise and amend the pilot curriculumof The Road to Wisdom. This work willtake time as the committee continuespiloting the curriculum and seekingfeedback from participating chapters. Itis important that our work continue toinvolve active membership, and that wework to integrate chapter identity intoan overarching education program. Myvision for this biennium is to see chaptersimplement The Road to Wisdom, andhave the committee continue refining thiseducation program through engagementwith active members to ensure allchapters are confident and successful intheir pursuit of excellence in membershipeducation. Bohumil Makovsky was aneducator and had high expectations for his

students and their performance. His workwent beyond musical performances andfocused on developing his students intothe best people possible. We will continueto embody this spirit by educating ourmembership candidates and brothers onthe values of the Fraternity and instillingin them skills and ideals that will ensurelife-long success and service.- Director’s Advisory Board: TheDirector’s Advisory Board will consistof the National Vice President forProfessional Relations and nine (9) collegeband directors appointed by the NationalCouncil in collaboration with the Boardof Trustees. This advisory board willprovide strategic advice to the fraternityleadership on matters relating tomusicianship, current college/universityissues, updates from other organizations, the National Intercollegiate Band, andthe National Commissioning Program. The Director’s Advisory Board will be amedium for directors to provide insightand leadership to the fraternity, and theywill serve as an advocacy tool for theNational Leadership. Boh understood theimportance of mentorship, education, andhigh quality musicianship. The advisoryboard will revitalize our relationship withcollege and university band directorsand sustain our relevance and growth foranother 100 years.William A. Scroggs is the Founder ofKappa Kappa Psi. He conceived theidea that an organization should beestablished to bring together bandmembers from colleges and universities. This dream, this idea was initiated inorder to build fellowship, a love of music, and a dedication to leadership. Mr.Scroggs served as the first president ofthe fraternity in its infancy and facilitatedthe establishment of a corporation andNational Fraternity. The dream of KappaKappa Psi was realized, and Scroggs’spirit lives on in all that we do to fosterbetter leadership and service to collegeand university bands. In his own words,Scroggs says, “See that you are worthy ofthe great honor awarded for your faithfuldevotion to our band.” Membership inKappa Kappa Psi “will be one of the mostsatisfying events of one’s life.”years of service to college and universitybands. My belief is that leadershipdevelopment must start as an initiativeof the National Council, and the ritualmust be threaded throughout everyidea and phase. We would utilize DistrictConventions, Leadership Conferences, and National Convention to begin theinitial phases of our work. Future phaseswould involve peer-led programmingat the chapter level and the formationof a Leadership Academy that wouldprovide summer workshops and trainingfor current and aspiring chapter officers. We have excellent resources within ourbrotherhood to begin this work, andI intend to see it become a reality thisbiennium.- Student Well-Being: Something notdiscussed often is the wholeness, harmony, and well-being of our active members.College can be a difficult time for many ofour students financially, emotionally, andphysically. My goal is to ensure we tailorprogramming to address the needs of ouractive members, and provide a cultureof support and compassion in the faceof life’s challenges. Building up skills inlife management, financial planning, andmotivation should be a service we provideto our active members and to our fellowcollege band members. This will be a workin progress that I hope will begin to takeshape this biennium. William A. Scroggs’goal was to establish an organization thatconnected all band members togetheracross the country in order to build upfellowship and leadership. This spirit offamily and brotherhood must continueas we support each other and create aculture of inclusion and compassion.- Chapter Officer Training andOperations: Building on this spiritof loyalty and dedication requiresknowledge and skills. The National Councilwill work together to develop documentsand materials that assist in chapter officertraining, transition, and managementof chapter operations. This is an areacritical to our success at the local level, and many chapters struggle to maintainconsistent leadership well-versed inoperations and fraternity responsibilities.Providing explicit instructions, examples, and frequently asked questions couldassist in alleviating some issues ourchapters encounter in this area. Workingtogether with District Governors andDistrict Officers, we should focus on thedevelopment of regional officer trainingand leadership development within eachdistrict. Current and aspiring officers willreceive training in their specific office thatis consistent with national procedures andpolicies. In addition, the regional trainingwill include aspects of the umil Makovsky’s example inspiredhis students to become better peopleand leaders. Men like A. Frank Martinembodied the spirit of Boh and led ourorganization into years of unprecedentedgrowth and achievement by focusingon active members and building strong, effective leaders. The Founders’ Spirit should inspire all ofus as we advance college and universitybands for another 100 years. Let us bringthe spirit of these Founders front andcenter as we strive to shape our identity forthe next century. As we continue to growin our diversity, let us never forget that weare one brotherhood. The Founders’ Spiritcalls for fellowship among all college anduniversity band members. This fraternityshould exist for all eligible band memberswho are committed to service, leadership, and better music. I ask all of you to join mein growing Kappa Kappa Psi into a placefor all who love band and are willing tocommit themselves to its promotion anddevelopment. With the dedication of allbrothers, alumni, sponsors, directors, andfriends of Kappa Kappa Psi, we will ensureanother 100 years of Striving for theHighest and living The Founders’ Spirit!A. Frank Martin is Mr. Kappa Kappa Psi. Hewas the First Grand President from 19191922 and the Third Executive Secretaryfrom 1939-1964. His dedication to KappaKappa Psi has been unmatched, and hiscommitment to building chapter resourcesand operational knowledge continues toguide leaders of the Fraternity today. Hiswork in creating the Ritual and importantsymbols has remained intact for almosta century and continues to inspiremembers each and every year. “A leadermust be able to show his people the roadto service, to ambition, and to love.” This- Leadership Development: As we spirit of loyalty and dedication shouldembody the spirit of our Founder, William continue to influence our decisions as In this together,A. Scroggs, let us make leadership the brothers and motivate us to always Strive Evan L. Thompsonfuture of our fraternity. 2017 - 2019Candidate for National Vice Presidentfor Colonization & MembershipMARCO KRCATOVICHMy fellow brothers of Kappa Kappa Psi,Marco Krcatovich II currently serves as the NationalVice President for Programs. Brother Krcatovich wasinitiated into the Nu Chapter of KKΨ in 2001 at theUniversity of Michigan. He was a member of theMichigan Marching Band, served his chapter as Corresponding Secretary, and served the North CentralDistrict as Vice President for Colonization and Membership and two years as District President. At theend of his second term as District President, BrotherKrcatovich was honored with the J. Lee Burke Student Achievement Award, in part for his work inchanging the culture of district conventions andevents by focusing on promoting education andleadership among all brothers, and the introduction of workshops as the central feature of districtconvention, while making district business more efficient so there were more opportunities for educational programming.Since his graduation from the University of Michigan, Brother Krcatovich has served as Colony Advisor for both Mu Epsilon (East Stroudsburg State University, Pennsylvania) and Nu Theta (NortheasternUniversity, Massachusetts), installed the Nu Eta (St.Augustine’s University, North Carolina), Nu Xi (University of Illinois – Urbana/Champaign), and Nu Pi(University of Illinois – Chicago) chapters, served onthe advisory board for the Theta Beta and Eta Gamma (TBΣ) chapters at Boston University during a difficult time for the chapters, and became an honorary member of both chapters and of the Northeastand Midwest Districts. Brother Krcatovich served asNational Vice Chair and Membership Chair (201113) and National Chair (2013-15) for the KKΨ Alumni Association’s Board of Directors. He was the firstbrother to donate through the Alumni Giving Program (AGP) at a level where he could give the gift ofLife Membership and has since gifted a second LifeMembership to his first chapter Vice President andthe person who recruited him to join Kappa KappaPsi as a freshman.Brother Krcatovich graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Space Sciencewith a concentration in Meteorology from the University of Michigan’s College of Engineering in 2005.He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania’sGraduate School of Education, where he earned aMaster’s of Science in Education degree in HigherEducation Management in 2007.Brother Krcatovich currently serves as the Directorof Institutional Research and Effectiveness at Governors State University in University Park, Illinois. Thissenior administration position includes supervising professional and administrative staff, producing federal and state reports and grant research, overseeing the only academic research programon campus to provide professional research op-I enthusiastically declare my candidacyfor the office of National Vice Presidentfor Colonization and Membership for thecoming biennium. As your current NationalVice President for Programs, I have theexperience gained during my time on ourNational Council and immediate knowledgeof all the work of our leadership. As a pastcolony advisor, chapter advisor, and Chair ofour Alumni Association Board, I know howto serve every brother from our newest tothose that helped us navigate 98 years as afraternity. As a professional in myfield, I bring a deep background in areasthat will make me successful as your nextNational Vice President for Colonization andMembership. We are at an important moment in ourbrotherhood. The current National Councilhas built the foundation, but we must domore because that is what it means to be abrother of Kappa Kappa Psi. If we want to bearound for 100 years and beyond, we need tolook at some critical areas where our energiesand efforts can help me our mission forward. We are implementing a National MembershipEducation Curriculum, based on thesupport of brothers at our last nationalconvention. This curriculum is anational effort to train our newest membersand support our membership educatorsusing the best practices of teaching andeducation. I want to continue to implementthe new curriculum so we can move beyondthe pilot and testing stage, but I also want toexpand the committee so we can focus onhelping chapters with hands-on support asthey implement the changes. A broader teamand effort will allow us to expand the scopeof this work to include post-membershipeducation and recruitment. I also want to putour colonies at the front of the line becauseI have seen first-hand the membershipeducation training of our newest chaptersand I think they can teach us a lot aboutwhere we can improve these efforts as we rollthis out for every chapter. In that same vein, we need to increase theopportunities to serve our brotherhoodKKΨ Elections Newsletter - 6after graduation and share our talents andgifts. When I was on the Board of ourAlumni Association I saw many enthusiasticbrothers who could serve as future sponsors, governors, even national officers, but as anorganization we needed to provide moreleadership development opportunitiesfor them. Based on that I co-authored anapproved Leadership Development strategicplan with incoming President Evan Thompsonand I want to see those efforts continue so wecan have a deep pool of leaders that can workhands-on with chapters, districts, and bandprograms. You’ll see the first efforts of thatplan at National Convention as chapters areinvited to apply for leadership grants to bringspeakers to your campus to help developleaders in your band program. When it comes to our newest chapters andthose that go through discipline, I don’t thinkthe process should end with active status, butinstead it should involve support throughoutthe transition and beyond so chapters are notleft on their own to figure out how to becomenot just an active chapter, but a superior one.Having more trained leaders will give us theopportunity for these chapters to get handson, individualized outreach. Making the longterm development of our chapters a prioritywill make sure we have a bright future aheadon our campuses. Finally, I believe we need to support theentire being of our brothers (as set in thegoals of our incoming President) and haveworked at all levels of the fraternity to providemore education, teaching, and mentoring.I serve as a mentor in my professional andfraternal life based on the skills I learned asa brother of Kappa Kappa Psi and we need tocontinue to expand this work.I alsowant to support brothers of all backgrounds.I know, from being a low-income studentwho worked two jobs to get through college, that we need to make sure the fraternity isaccessible to all students. On our National Council, I have advocatedstrongly for our brothers so we do not createa fraternity they cannot join or afford andI have looked for ways to control dues andcosts. I want to continue that work and makeeducation on equity, discrimination, andempathetic support of our brothers a priority

portunities to undergraduate students, and servingand chairing numerous university committees onstrategic enrollment planning, student evaluation, effectiveness in university operations, and datawarehousing management system developmentand improvement. In his free time, he performs inthe Encore Concert Band, based in Mokena, Illinois,as the third and bass trombone continuing 23 yearsplaying in bands.for our National Council.I currently serve as the Director of InstitutionalResearch and Effectiveness at Governors StateUniversity in University Park, IL. This senioradministration position requires me to setand meet deadlines, regularly communicateand collaborate with colleagues on campusand across the country, and produce highquality work whose accuracy may determineour eligibility for federal grants and aid. Ialso supervise an incredible professionaland student staff while juggling numerouscommittees and strategic initiatives. Myvaried and extensive professional andFraternal experience present a perfecttemplate for my success as your National VicePresident for Colonization and Membership.Kappa Kappa Psi is on a great trajectory andwe head into 100 years as a brotherhoodwith a lot to celebrate. That does not meanwe are perfect. Every lost chapter or brotherwho doesn’t graduate an active memberof Kappa Kappa Psi should be a reminderthat we have more work to do.I wantto focus on building our resources, trainingour leaders and future leaders, moving ourNational Membership Education Curriculumbeyond the pilot phase and expandingit to focus on the whole education andrecruitment process, identifying brotherswho are marginalized and identifying policiesand resources that can serve them well, andcreating a recruitment process for chaptersthat is accessible for all qualified musicians. We have had success this biennium, now wemust do the work that helps us have more.As an active member of the current NationalCouncil, I can hit the ground running on mygoals and the work of the National LeadershipTeam from the very first day.My plan as your National Vice Presidentfor Colonization and Membership will notbe easy and it is not intended to be aboutquick projects that will be done in two years.I want to leave a solid foundation for thenext generation of leaders through bettersystems, intense focus on the basics andinfrastructure of our chapter lives, and byaddressing long-term concerns with plansfor long-term solutions. Just as I have donefor the office of National Vice President forPrograms. As a professional, I have modeledmy career on what I learned as a Brother: Setgoals, identify benchmarks that reach thosegoals (even if you can’t fully address thegoal in your time as a leader), and work withall of your energy and focus to meet thosebenchmarks bringing in everyone you can tohelp you do it.It is this model I plan tobring as your National Vice President forKKΨ Elections Newsletter - 7Colonization and Membership in continuingto transform Kappa Kappa Psi.I am honored to present myself for yourconsideration, and look forward to continueserving you with humility and distinctionfrom day one.Fraternally,Marco Krcatovich IINational Vice President for ProgramsLife Member, Nu (University of Michigan)
