UnpackingUnpacking the enclosureHeavy: Use at least two people to unpack the enclosure.Warning: To prevent the enclosure from tipping over after installation: Stabilize the enclosure before installing the components. See “Installing the rear cableport” on page 11. Do not extend components on sliding rails out from the enclosure until you haveinstalled three or more pieces of similar equipment, or the stabilizer plate or bolt-downbrackets are installed. See “Installing the rear cable port” on page 11. Do not extend more than one component from the enclosure at a time. Load the heaviest components first, and place them toward the bottom of the enclosure toprevent the enclosure from becoming top-heavy. Use caution when moving an empty enclosure on its casters; the enclosure may be unstablewhen pushed or pulled from the side. Push the enclosure from the front or back when movingit on its casters. For extra stability, load 158 kg (350 lbs) of equipment into the bottom of theenclosure before moving it on its casters.1. Move the shipping pallet to a firm, level surface in an open area. Inspect the enclosure for visiblesigns of shipping damage. If you detect shipping damage, contact APC Customer Support at thenumber listed on the yellow label on the front of the enclosure or on the back cover of thismanual.2. See the label on the packaging to determine where to cut the wrapping. Using sturdy shears or autility knife, carefully remove the plastic stretch wrap surrounding the enclosure.ns1439aNote: Save the bag containing the warranty card and installation manual.4NetShelter CX Enclosure: Unpacking, Installation, and Customization

Moving the enclosureCasters. The total load on the casters may not exceed 450 kg (992 lbs). For the weights see the enclosure “Specifications” on page 14.The front wheels have 360 degree rotation for maneuverability. Rear wheels have front-to-back motionfor stability. Push the enclosure from the front or the back, not the sides; it may be unstable when pushedfrom the side. For greater stability, load 159 kg (350 lbs) or more of equipment into the enclosure beforemoving it on its casters.ConfigurationBefore installing the enclosure, plan the location and space needed to install equipment, and plan theergonomics of keyboards and video monitors.Caution: Improper airflow could damage installed components. To maintain proper airflow, cover any empty vertical enclosure space with blanking panels (notincluded). APC offers modular, plastic Airflow Management Blanking Panels that snap into placewithout tools (AR8136BLK).NetShelter CX Enclosure: Unpacking, Installation, and Customization7

Installing EquipmentThis section provides information on how to install rack-mount equipment in the enclosure. Theinstructions provided with the equipment provide more detailed information.Identifying one U-space on the vertical mounting flangeWhen installing equipment, locate the top and bottom of a U-space on the mounting flanges. Every thirdhole on the mounting flanges of a NetShelter enclosure is numbered to indicate the middle of a U-space.A U-space consists of one of these numbered holes and one hole directly above and below it, as shown.765ns0014a1UInstalling cage nutsAPC offers a cage nut hardware kit (AR8100) for use with square holes.Warning: Install cage nuts horizontally, with the ears engaging the sides of the squarehole. Do NOT install cage nuts vertically with the ears engaging the top and bottom ofthe square hole.1. Insert the cage nut into the square hole by hooking one ear of the cage nut assembly through thefar side of the hole.Note: Install the cage nuts on the interior of the vertical mounting flange.2. Place the cage nut tool (not provided) on the otherside of the cage nut and pull to snap it into position.Removing cage nuts1. Remove any attached screw.2. Grasp the cage nut and squeeze the sides to releaseit from the square hole.NetShelter CX Enclosure: Unpacking, Installation, and Customization17

Equipment Planning Guidelinesns1560aFan module 1Avoid clustering hot-running equipmentsuch as servers, dense redundant arrays ofindependent disks (RAID), and largevoice-over-internet-protocol (VOIP)switches in one part of the enclosure.Distribute the thermal load evenly up anddown the enclosure such that each fanmodule supports an equal amount of thethermal load.Fan module 2Please note the following guidelines for proper installation and operation of hardware in a NetShelter CXEnclosure.ns1559aEach fan module has a triangular metalsection protruding slightly into theenclosure. This does not create an issue forinstallation of most equipment, but toallow for ample cabling space to the rearof the enclosure, deep servers should beinstalled in the enclosure space above andbelow these triangular metal protrusions.18NetShelter CX Enclosure: Unpacking, Installation, and Customization

Cable ManagementThe NetShelter CX enclosure has a cable access opening at the rear the enclosure. Six vertical 0Uaccessory channels are factory installed in the AR4018, AR4018I, AR4024, AR4024I and four inAR4038 and AR4038I enclosures. Also provided in the front of AR4038 and AR4038I enclosures arevertical cable management clips in place of an accessory channel. APC offers a variety of other cablemanagement accessories.Rear cable access portThe cable port is large enough to accommodate several hundred ethernet cables and has a removable topcover. The design is such that pre-terminated data distribution panels can be installed effortlessly, withno need for de-termination and re-termination.ns1585bTo install or remove the rear cable access port see“Installing the rear cable port” on page 11.Vertical 0U accessory channelsThe vertical 0U accessory channels provide toolless mounting capabilities for APC Rack PowerDistribution Units, APC cable containment brackets, and tie-off locations for cables. The standardposition for the accessory channels is two located in the front of the enclosure and four in the rear of theenclosure.Removing vertical 0U accessory channels.ns1600aVertical 0U accessory channels can beremoved completely from the enclosure.Loosen the fasteners that attach the vertical0U accessory to the enclosure.NetShelter CX Enclosure: Unpacking, Installation, and Customization19
