SOMEONE TO RULE US IN RIGHTEOUSNESSSunday, April 5, 2020 – Palm SundayService Order: Service of the Word, Christian Worship, page 38A warm welcome to those visiting us this morning. Here at St. Paul we preach Christcrucified, whose suffering and death paid for our sins and earned for us the gift ofeverlasting life. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact PastorGoetzinger or Pastor Thompson. We pray that you return to worship with us again.Come, let us sing for joy to the LORD;let us shout aloud to the Rock ofour salvation.Let us come before him with thanksgivingand extol him with music and song. For the LORD is the great God,the great King above all gods.In his hand are the depths of the earth, and the mountain peaks belong to him.The sea is his, for he made it,and his hands formed the dry land.Come, let us bow down in worship.let us kneel before the LORD our Maker;for he is our God and we are the peopleof his pasture, the flock under his care.Psalm 95:1-7PRAYER UPON ENTERING THE CHURCHsilence for meditation.Dear Jesus, today I see you riding into Jerusalem, being treated like a king, but like noother king in history. You came humble, to serve me, to die for me. And now risen, you areexalted as the highest of Kings. Remind me you still rule today, and that my future is sureand certain in your care as my king. Amen.1

OPENING HYMNThere Is a —Christian Worship Supplement 747:1-21. There is a Redeemer, Jesus, God’s own Son,Precious Lamb of God, Messiah, Holy One.RefrainThank you, O my Father, for giving us your Son andleaving your Spirit till the work on earth is done.2. Jesus, my Redeemer, Name above all names,Precious Lamb of God, Messiah, Hope for sinners slain. RefrainINVOCATION, CONFESSION, AND ——Stand.M: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen.We have come into the presence of God, who created us to love and servehim as his dear children. But we have disobeyed him and deserve only hiswrath and punishment. Therefore, let us confess our sins to him and pleadfor his mercy.C: Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth. Incountless ways I have sinned against you and do not deserve to becalled your child. But trusting in Jesus, my Saviour, I pray: Havemercy on me according to your unfailing love. Cleanse me from mysin, and take away my guilt.M: God, our heavenly Father, has forgiven all your sins. By the perfect lifeand innocent death of our Lord Jesus Christ, he has removed your guiltforever. You are his own dear child. May God give you the strength to liveaccording to his will.C: Amen.2We always beginour worship in thename of our TriuneGod: the Fatherwho created us, theSon who redeemedus, and the Spiritwho lives in us.To confess is toadmit we’re farfrom perfect andso, without Jesus, shouldn’t be with aperfect God.The pastorabsolves us of oursins, that is,reminds us we’reforgiven because ofJesus’ death andresurrection.

PRAYER OF THE : Let us pray: We praise you, O God, for the great acts of love by which youredeemed us through your Son, Jesus Christ. As he was acclaimed by thosewho scattered their garments and branches of palm in his path, so may wealways hail him as our King and follow him with perfect confidence; wholives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.Be seated.FIRST LESSONZechariah God promises through his prophet a king who comes humbly, yet withrighteousness.Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion!Shout, Daughter Jerusalem!See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey,on a colt, the foal of a donkey.I will take away the chariots from Ephraimand the warhorses from Jerusalem, and the battle bow will be broken. He will proclaim peace to the nations. His rule will extend from sea to seaand from the River to the ends of the earth.SECOND LESSONPhilippians Paul tells us how Jesus was equally Lord of the universe with God, yet humbledhimself as a human to serve us. And now he reigns once again as the highest ofkings. In your relationships with one another, have the same mindsetas Christ Jesus:Who, being in very nature God,did not consider equality with Godsomething to be used to his own advantage;rather, he made himself nothing3We believe that theBible is the sourceof all spiritualtruth, and so weread lessons fromit to learn whoGod is and whathe’s done for usthroughout historyand still today.

by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man,he humbled himselfby becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross! Therefore God exalted himto the highest placeand gave him the name that is aboveevery name, that at the name of Jesus every kneeshould bow,in heaven and on earth and underthe earth, and every tongue acknowledge that JesusChrist is Lord,to the glory of God the Father.VERSE OF THE DAYJohn M: The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. The congregation stands.GOSPELMatthew —We see Jesus fulfilling God’s promise of a king, coming to save.As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount ofOlives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go to the village aheadof you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her.Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, say thatthe Lord needs them, and he will send them right away.”This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet:“Say to Daughter Zion,‘See, your king comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’ ”The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. They broughtthe donkey and the colt and placed their cloaks on them for Jesus to sit on.A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cutbranches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that wentahead of him and those that followed shouted,“Hosanna to the Son of David!”4Gospel means“Good News,”and so this is areading from thehistoricalbiographies ofJesus that tells usthe good news ofhow Jesus cameinto this world tosave us.

“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”“Hosanna in the highest heaven!”When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked,“Who is this?”The crowds answered, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth inGalilee.”Be seated.HYMN OF THE DAYRide On, Ride On in —Christian Worship 133:1,2,51 Ride on, ride on in majesty!Hark!
