NEWSLETTERProper Christmas Tree CareCan Prevent A Holiday TragedyThe holiday season is almost here and for mostpeople this is a festive and joyous time of year. However, with all the fun and festivities comes thepotential for fire and burn hazards - especially when itcomes to Christmas trees. The photos below demonstratehow rapidly a tree fire can spread.Keep your freshly cut tree fire safe: Pine needles should be difficult to pull from the branchesand should not break when bent between your fingers. Ifa shower of needles falls when you bounce the tree trunkon the ground, the tree is dry and potentially a fire hazard. Make a fresh cut three-inches from the base of the treeand place the tree in fluid (see recipe below) so it canquickly absorb water. Choose a sturdy stand that holds at least one gallon ofliquid. After 10-seconds Check the fluid level often and keep the stand filled. Ifthe fluid level drops below the cut end of the trunk, it canform a seal preventing absorption of liquid. An averagetree can consume up to one-gallon of water daily. After 20-seconds Make sure your tree is placed at least three feet awayfrom any heat source and is not blocking any exit. Place the tree near an outlet so that cords will not extendlong distances. After 30-seconds When your tree begins to shed needles, it’s time to safelydispose of it. Dried-out trees are a serious fire hazard andshould not be left in a garage or placed against theoutside of your home. After 40-secondsThe Burn Institute would like to thank the Chula VistaFire Department for assisting with this demonstration.Burn Institute Newsletter is a publication of theBurn Institute and ispublished three times a year.Holiday Recipe: Fire Retardant Christmas TreeCombine the followingingredients in a bucket: 1 gallon warm waterEditor: Rosella AplinBurn Institute - San Diego3702 Ruffin Road, #101San Diego, CA 92123(858) 541-2277Burn Institute - Imperial Valley612 “J” Street, #4Imperial, CA 92251(760) 355-3175 1 pint clear Karo SyrupThe following recipe isdesigned to increase fluidintake for a freshly cut treeand help keep it from dryingout too quickly andbecoming a fire hazard. 4 oz. liquid chlorine bleach 1/2 teaspoon borax 2 oz. cider vinegar 2 oz. liquid Woolitewww.burninstitute.orgColor cover photo generously donated by Graphics Ink2Make a fresh cut three inchesfrom the trunk base.
