COMMUNICATIONS NETWORKS LAB (CNL) Each LAB test system emulates 3G network elements and traffictypes within the Wireless infrastructure. Provides a base network environment that enables the researchers totest applications, devices, and services prior to deployment on realtime networks2

2G 3G 4G COMMUNICATIONS NETWORKSGSM, TDM and TDMA, Coreinterfaces T1 E1 but nowmigrating to IPWCDMA, Same Core network as2GLTE, OFDMA, SC-FDMA, All IP3

MAPS (Message Automation & Protocol Simulation) Multi-protocol, Multi-technology Platform. Simulate any node, and any interface in network with MAPS (except Air interface). Supports Emulation, Conformance, and Load testing of a varietyof protocols over IP, TDM, and Wireless networks.4

HD RTP and Packet Data Traffic Generation Appliances19

RTP HD System The RTP HD Server network appliancesupports generation of high volume ofcalls with traffic for load testing 2G/3Gnetworks Specialized 1U rackmount appliance, achieve up to 20,000 endpoints perappliance (5000 simultaneous calls withduplex traffic per port)20

Remote RTP HD System The load (high density real-time trafficand signaling) simulated in the abovelab setup across 2G/3G/4G networkscan be evenly distributed in roundrobin fashion over the 4x HD ports onthe RTP HD system, so that incomingrequests may be evenly distributedamong all of them. Each HD port is capable of 5000simultaneous calls with duplex traffic.Once the port limit is reached theload is distributed across theremaining HD ports available in thesystem.21

PacketLoad 10G PacketLoad 4 x 10Gbps (PKS174) is a Data Traffic Generator 2U Rack Appliance with4 x 10Gbps NIC interfaces: total capacity of up to 40 Gbits/sec Stateful TCP/HTTPTraffic. It supports massive simulation of UEs (up to 500,000) with high density (up to 4 Gbpsor 40 Gbps) mobile data traffic simulation for both UMTS, and LTE networks.22

System Quick Start - Start Remote Controller The MAPS Listener is configured to run on startup. While running an iconshould be displayed inWindows notification area. If the icon is missing, invoke MAPSListener x64 from the Desktop. Invoke MAPS Remote Controller from the 3Gsystem Desktop. The Controller is configured to control the followingMAPS nodes: RNCs (IuCS and IuPS), HNBGW,HLR, SMSC, SGSN, GGSN Start All to connect to all MAPS server nodes.28

Inter-Networking 3G with 2G and 4G Lab(Inter-Operability)34

Inter-Network Calls Inter-Network Calls 3G user calling 2G user 3G user calling 4G user 3G user sending SMS to 2G user 3G user sending SMS to 4G userRoaming calls 3G user calling 2G roaming user 3G user calling 4G roaming user35

Inter-Network Calls- 3G calling 2G When a voice call or SMS call is placedfrom UE1 to UE2, MSC on 3G networkreceives call from UE1 and checks forthe received MSISDN registration usingMAP table. If MAP is found then call is routed withinsame network otherwise call is routed to2G MSC. MSC in the 2G network routesthe request to 2G user.36

Inter-Network Calls- 3G calling 2G CM SERVICE REQUEST message issent to 3G MSC Authentication procedure is initiatedat the HLR Node When Setup Message (Voice Call) isreceived, MSC checks whether CalledMSISDN is registered to 3G Network. If not, the Initial Address (BICC Call isinitiated) towards GMSC.37

Inter-Network Calls - 3G calling 4G38

Inter-Network Calls - 3G calling 4G When a voice call is placed fromUE1 to UE2, MSC on 3G networkreceives call from UE1 and checksfor the received MSISDNregistration using MAP table. If MAP is not found then MSCchecks 4G CSV. If MSISDN isavailable in 4G CSV then call isrouted to MGC using Initial AddressMessage.39

Inter-Network Calls - 3G SMS to 2G40

Roaming Calls - 3G Calling 2G Roaming UE When 3G user calls 2Groaming user, MSCreceives Call and checksCalled MSISDN isregistered into MSC. If registered, Paging isinitiated to RNC within 3Gnetwork to call 2G user.41

Roaming Calls - 3G Calling 2G Roaming UE42

Roaming Calls - 3G Calling 4G Roaming UE 4G User when roaming into 3G Networkregisters to 3G MSC, i.e. Locationupdate is performed and MSC hasMSISDN vs IMSI MAP stored. When 3G user calls 4G roaming user,MSC receives Call and checks CalledMSISDN is registered into MSC. Ifregistered, Paging in initiated to RNCwithin 3G network to call 4G user.43

PERFORMANCE. Load, Stress, and Performance, Testing to measure the capability of an entity for varioustraffic conditions. Load /Stress test with different statistical distribution patterns with capacity of 2000simultaneous calls,@ 500 call per second rate Control and operate MAPS remotely, also gather statistics, logs and reports. Traffic Simulation to perform end-to-end testing of various traffic - mobile traffic simulationover GTP, transmit/record real time voice traffic, DTMF and MF digits, user definedsingle/dual tones over established channels44

MAPSTM Remote Controller45

MAPS Remote Controller Remotely control multipleMAPS Servers runningon different PCs from asingle remote clientapplication Allows multiple users touse MAPS productsinstalled on a singleMAPS server46

MAPS Remote Controller Communicates with the multiple MAPS Server via Listener over TCP/IP.47

Introduction to UMTS The third generation mobile communication system UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) is successor of GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications). UMTS networks can be divided in two parts.

Chapter 1 : UMTS Overview 1.1 Introduction Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) is a 3G cellular telecommunication system. It will be the successor of GSM. UMTS is designed to cope with the growing demand of mobile and internet applications with required quality of service parameters. WCDMA is used for the radio interface of UMTS. It
