It is, however, possiblefor legal immigrants to collectSocial Security benefits if theyhave individually earned theright to do so, including thosewho are the legally-presentdependent (spouse or child) ofsomeone who is collecting SocialSecurity benefits. By "legalimmigrant" I mean those whohave immigrated to the UnitedStates and have applied for andreceived either a PermanentResident Card ("green card") orwho have subsequently acquiredU.S. citizenship. It's also possible to obtain an "EmploymentAuthorization Document" whichgrants a foreign citizen temporary authority to work in theU.S., mainly used by citizens ofother countries who work in theU.S. (typically those workingfor an international corporationwhich has a U.S. presence).
