A DISTINGUISHED PASTFounded in 1960, New College opened in 1964 as a private coUege whose studentswould come from all parts of the nation and whose faculty and curriculum would reflect thehighest standards of excellence.New College attracted immediate attention for the nature and quality ofits academicprogram. In 1967, when the first students were graduated, the CoJlege won accreditation.Soon graduates began to make their marks in chosen careers and in graduate and professionalschools. As the College matured academicaUy, inflationary pressures threatened its very lifein the early 1970s. After exploring various strategies for survival, the college administrationand trustees proposed to the Board of Regents of the State University System of Florida a novelplan that allowed the institution to become a free-standing college within the University ofSouth Florida, sharing the campus with the University's regional academic program. Specialaction by the Florida Legislature set the stage for this unique partnership to occur. NewCollege was continued through a combination of support from the State and annual grantsfrom the New College Foundation. Together, they enable the college to remain small and tocontinue its distinctive program. As the designated residential honors college of the State University System ofFlorida, New College has continued to thrive, earning accolades from reviewers ranging fromthe editors of Money magazine to the 1994 site visit committee of the Southern Association ofColleges and Schools. New College is sixth in the nation in the percentage of graduates whosubsequently earn doctorate degrees in the arts and sciences.Events, activities, programs, and facilities of the University of South Florida are available to allwithout regard to race, color, sex religion, national origin, handicap, or age as provided by law andin accordance with the University 's respect for personal dignity.
