Huntersmay take up to one antlered deer and three antlerless deer, or four antlerless deer using the statewide deer permit. The statewide season limit for antlered deer is oneper hunter. A hunter may take as many deer as allowed for eachzone. In order to take more than four deer statewide, an additional deer permit must be purchased. An additional deer permit allows a hunter to takeup to two additional deer beyond the four deer allowed by the statewide or youth deer permits. Zonebag limits apply. Hunters who did not harvest anantlered deer using their statewide or youth deerpermits can take one antlered deer and up to oneantlerless deer, or up to two antlerless deer with theadditional deer permit. Shooting hours are 30 minutes before sunrise to 30minutes after sunset.

CHECKING and TAGGINGAll deer must be telechecked.Hunters must call 1-800-245-4263 orcomplete the online check-in process atfw.ky.gov. See the “Recording, Checking, Tagging and Transporting” portionof this guide’s “General Information”section for full details. If the hide or head is removed before the harvested deer is checked in –to quarter the animal, for example – itis necessary to demonstrate proof of sexby retaining the head or keeping thegenitalia attached to the carcass. In suchcases, it is still necessary to fill out theharvest log immediately after harvestand telecheck the animal before midnight on the day the deer is harvestedor recovered.A carcass tag is required if a harvested deer leaves the hunter’s possession for any reason.STATEWIDE DEER PERMITAll deer hunters ages 16 and older, unless license exempt, must first buyCarry proofHunters who buy their license orpermit by phone or internet mustcarry while hunting: a picture IDand proof of purchase (an authorization number, paper license or computer print out). The permitallows a hunter to take four deer: oneantlered and three antlerless, or fourantlerless. It does not matter if the antlered or antlerless deer is taken first.ADDITIONAL DEER PERMITTo take more than four deer, an additional deer permit must be purchased. The additional deer permit is valid fordeer of either sex. The additional deerpermit allows a hunter to take up to twoadditional deer beyond those allowedby the statewide permit in the following combinations: one antlered and oneantlerless, or two antlerless. Regardlessof what permit a deer hunter carries, thestatewide season limit for antlered deeris one per hunter. The additional deerpermit is not valid unless the hunterhas first purchased an annual huntinglicense and statewide deer permit and isable to show proof of that in the field. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONSAbout CWD Surveillance ZoneSpecial RegulationsWHAT IS A CWDSURVEILLANCE ZONE?A CWD Surveillance Zone includesspecial regulations and extra testing ofdeer carcasses, whether taken by hunters orroad-killed. There are no changes to seasonlengths or the number of deer a hunter canharvest in the five-county CWD Surveillance Zone.WHY STOP BAITING and FEEDING?Concentrating deer at one locationcan speed up the spread of disease. Deercannot be vaccinated against CWD, soadding a vaccine to bait is not an optionor solution.Infected deer can spread the prionsthat cause CWD throughout the landscape. Prions trigger abnormal reactions inbrain cells of members of the cervid species, including deer, elk, moose and caribou. Prions are extremely resistant to destructionand can only be inactivated by temperatures exceeding 1,832 degrees or throughchemical inactivation with specific agents. The best way to stop the spread of prions iskeeping infected deer contained.Baiting includes putting out grains, minerals and salts. Scents and deer urinebased products used in hunting would stillbe allowed in the surveillance zone.WHY CAN’T HUNTERS MOVEWHOLE CARCASSES?Hunters can still de-bone the meat oftheir deer and take it outside of the surveillance zone. Hunters also may transport outof the zone: antlers, antlers attached to aclean skull plate, a clean skull, clean teeth, hides and finished taxidermy mounts.Prions, the protein which causeschronic wasting disease, concentrate inbrain and spinal tissue. Prions are not living organisms and do not die when thedeer dies. Infected carcass parts depositedelsewhere will likely contaminate that areaand continue the spread of the disease.WHY HAVE CWD CHECK STATIONS?A CWD check station is a locationwhere hunters take their harvested deerso biologists can obtain samples to test forthe presence of CWD. Maps of locationsand operating hours are available online atfw.ky.gov/CWD. If the prions that causeCWD are found in the state through sampling, the department can focus on containing the disease in that area.WHAT ARE THE DATES and TIMESFOR MANDATORY CWDCHECK STATIONS?CWD check stations will operate onlyduring muzzleloader or modern gun seasons for deer. This is because the majorityof deer are harvested during these firearmsseasons. Check stations will operate duringthese seasons and dates: Early muzzleloader season: Oct. 16-17 Modern gun season: Nov. 13-28 Late muzzleloader season: Dec. 11-19CWD check stations will be openfrom 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. (Central). Additionally, CWD check stations will be open untilnoon (Central) on the Monday followingthe last day of each season requiring a mandatory check.Deer harvested with bows and crossbows during the muzzleloader or moderngun seasons also must be taken to CWDcheck stations.WHY RESTRICT REHABILITATEDDEER RELEASE?Brain tissue is needed in order to testfor CWD. Approved testing cannot bedone on live animals. Releasing animalsfrom a surveillance zone outside of that areacarries the risk of releasing an unknowinglyinfected animal. Releasing a deer back intothe county in which it was rehabilitatedcontains the risk. Only licensed rehabilitators may accept injured or orphaned deer.DOES CWD AFFECT PEOPLE?To date, there have been no reportedcases of CWD infection in people, according to the Centers for Disease Control andPrevention (CDC). However, some animal studies suggest CWD poses a risk toRECOMMENDEDPRECAUTIONS FOR DEER andELK HUNTERS INCLUDE: Report any deer or elk actingstrangely or appearing ill. When field dressing and processing an animal, bone-out all meatand avoid severing bones. Don't split the backbone. Avoid or minimize handling ofbrain, spinal cord, tonsils andlymph glands. Do not consume brain, spinalcord or lymph glands. Thoroughly wash your hands andsanitize your tools when finishedprocessing game. The CDC recommends not eatingmeat from an animal that testspositive for CWD. Hunters submitting deer samplesat CWD check stations or throughthe voluntary Deer Sample Collection Station program willreceive CWD test results.certain types of non-human primates, likemonkeys, that eat meat from CWD-infected animals or come in contact with brain orbody fluids from infected deer or elk. Thesestudies raise concerns that there may alsobe a risk to people.Need more information?Go online to fw.ky.gov/CWD formore details and information, call theKentucky Fish and Wildlife Information Center at 1-800-858-1549 from8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. (Eastern) weekdays, or send an email at any time toinfo.center@ky.gov.Supplement page 3
