Page 2Message from the ChairmanRenovations and UpgradesSince the election of the 2015 Board of Management in November 2014, the Board has delivered on its promise to renovate and upgrade our club house and bowling green facilitiesfor the benefit of our members and guests.By improving the club house and its facilities we can now offer our members and guestsgreater comfort combined with a unique experience to enjoy a night out with friends in thebest club in Burleigh Heads.Projects that remain to be completed are: installation of WIFI for our members and guests. repair to the concrete pathway adjacent to #3 green. sealing of several roof leaks combined with the resealing of our roof tiles. upgrading of the XXXX sign with a club information area utilising LED screens on both sides.Thank youAt this point in time, on behalf of the club I would like to thank the members for their patience for the disruptions caused by these extensive renovations and upgrades but I'm sureyou will agree the end result has been worth the pain.A special thankyou goes to Karen Gilfillan for her excellent management of these projects, especially with her tireless energy in ensuring the many companies and contractors delivered their work on time, at cost and at the standard she demanded.I would also like to thank Paul Hynes for his scrutiny of our expenditure along the way andthose members and guests that took the time to complete our 'what do you expect from yourclub' survey. All your suggestions were considered and many of your ideas, if they proved tobe viable, have been implemented. There is still much to be improved and the Board, by being proactive, is determined to improve our club customer service through in house training by our club managers. Our staffare not only the biggest single cost item but also our most important resource. Club entertainment in the form of top class shows and great regular weekly entertainers are constantlybeing reviewed to ensure our members and guests get the very best that is available. Thejuke box has already proven to be a success and is the key along with good entertainment toattract more cliental to the club.SummaryOn behalf of the Board of Management and our Club Managers I hope that you enjoy ournewly renovated facilities and rest assured that the financial status of the Club is secure. Please keep in mind that the overall cost of these renovations and upgrades has come outof the net profit from our 2014 trading year.To date in 2015, the bar is generating very good sales, the gaming lounge is producing record turnover and barefoot bowls continues to fill the club on Sunday afternoons and theBoard is confident that 2015 will be one of our best trading years ever.It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Honorary Member, Don Brown. Themajority of his life was dedicated to this club and helping our members. Our sincerest sympathies go to his family.Ray FellenbergBoard ChairmanInformation for Members and their Guests.Burleigh Heads Bowls Club Inc. PO Box 200, Burleigh Heads PH (07) 55 35 1023

Page 5Edition 238Many members have commented on the internal club renovations and how pleased theyare with them. The Board and I are pleased to provide an update on our financial situationas a result of the renovations. The top chart indicates the money the club has invested inTerm deposits and Cash/Cheque withdrawal accounts with the Bank. The balance wasdisplaying a healthy increase until the Income and Expenses for February took effect onthe March balance. February was a month of exception where Bar, Gaming and GreenFees income were down due to a number of 'washed out' days and rain on the Gold Coastfor 22 days of the month. Expenses included items for the renovations/repairs and a Building & Contents Insurance bill for 25,051. As can be seen the Income/Expenses have nownormalised during March and April and our reserves in the Bank are growing. The board and I thank members for taking an interest in our club's affairs. It is through yourinvolvement that the club will continue to prosper.Assets– Cheque/ Savings Oct-14Nov 14Dec 14Jan 15Feb 15Mar 15Apr 78,1701,106,883Income Expenses Mar-15209,306181,318Apr-15215,513172,774Paul HynesTreasurerInformation for Members and their Guests.Burleigh Heads Bowls Club Inc. Page 7Edition 238Coaching Notesby RonLast month I talked about learning the track of your bowl, due to weight and green conditionsyour bowl actually has many different paths to travel. To allow you to play shots into andthrough the head, you need to be able to visualise the track your bowl will take and allow thegrass line to change to accommodate this different path. If you can train your imagination tovisualise the perfect game, and every shot you will play in that game, the chances are that youwill at some time achieve the perfect set of shots. Visualisation is the next step up the psychological ladder from focus and requires a lot of intense mental practice. To be a good reliableplayer it is not only necessary to train to play all the shots you will ever need to play, but to trainyour mind to believe you can play the shots every time you are called on to do so. When youhave a training roll up with another player I imagine you are all trying to beat your training partner", and if not, why not, the competitive spirit must kick in. This is good match experience, butyou need more, you must play shots in which you don't have utmost confidence, to develop theshot and be comfortable playing that shot. Training therefore must involve not only a friendlygame but also time to set-up shots you need but are not comfortable with and play them overand over until you know they can be played at will. The shots falling into this category are, usually, conversion shots, running shots or drives. The Conversion Shot is really a draw played to adifferent place, through the head and finishing behind and to the side. The aim is to either pickup the jack and move it to a more advantageous place, or to sit a shot bowl out of the head andreplace it with your bowl, or perhaps to push a short bowl of yours into a counting position. Theother use is to push a short bowl of your opposition through the head and stay for shot. Weightcontrol for all these shots is critical and requires a lot of training to develop the required .speed.The Running Shot is again a draw but somewhat heavier than a conversion shot because youare usually looking for 1 to 2 metres through the head and attempting to take the jack to theditch, take a bowl or two out of the head or kill the end. Both these shots require a slightly longer back swing and a slight narrowing of the delivery line, your delivery must still be smooth andyour body balanced. The Drive Shot is used as an attacking or defensive shot to take the jack to the ditch, or removea bowl or two from the head, open the area around the jack for further play e.g. to draw to thecleared jack, or to kill the end. Much the game as a running shot but played with considerablymore speed produced by an exaggerated back swing. When you are driving never take youreyes off the target so keep your head up and remain balanced throughout the delivery, practice. This is a necessary shot to have as a means to get into a head which is blocked by short bowls. If anyone requires a training program see me and I will prepare one for your needs. All these shots need your ability to visualise their path at the speed you intend to play, so playthe shots repetitively as you train to develop the ability to visualise where they travel, and develop the skill such that you have complete confidence in your ability to achieve results. I havebeen asked to remind all leads that you have a duty at the end of the game which is sometimesoverlooked. Please remember to:- ladies put the mats and jack in the mat box, men morningtake the mats and jack to the same numbered rink on the south ditch side and afternoon returnmats and jack to mat box.Good bowling and enjoyRonInformation for Members and their Guests.Burleigh Heads Bowls Club Inc. Page 16A woman went to her doctor'soffice. She was seen by one ofthe new doctors, but afterabout 4 minutes in the examination room, she burst outscreaming and ran down thehall. An older doctor stoppedher and asked what the problem was, and she explained. He had her sit down and relaxin another room. The olderdoctor marched back to thefirst and demanded, "What'sthe matter with you? Mrs. Terry is 63 years old, she hasfour grown children and sevengrandchildren, and you toldher she was pregnant?" Thenew doctor smiled smugly ashe continued to write on hisclipboard. "Cured her hiccupsthough, didn't it?"A bloke is walking down the street witha carton of beer under his arm.His friend Ted stops him and asks,"Hey Dave! Whatcha got that carton ofbeer for?""Well, I got it for my wife." answersDave."Wow," exclaims Ted, "Great trade. One day a man was walking along thebeach and found a bottle. He lookedaround and didn't see anyone so heopened it. A genie appeared and said,"For your kindness I will grant you awish, butonlyone."The man thought for a minute andsaid, "I have always wanted to visit Hawaii but have never been able to because I'm afraid of flying and shipsmake me seasick. So I wish for a roadto be built from here to Hawaii."The genie thought for a minute andsaid, "No, I don't think I can do that.Just think of all the work involved: thepilings needed to hold up the highway, how deep they would have to be toreach the bottom of the ocean. Thinkof all the pavement that would beneeded. No, that is just too much toask."The man thought for a minute andthen told the genie, "Well, there is oneother thing that I have always wanted.I would like to be able to understandmy girlfriend. What makes her laughand cry, why is she temperamental, why is she so difficult to get alongwith? Basically, what makes her tick?"The genie considered for a fewminutes and said, "So, do you wanttwo lanes or four?"Information for Members and their Guests.Burleigh Heads Bowls Club Inc.
