MAKING THE GLOBAL, LOCALInsight News started in 1974 as a colorcover magazine based in and servingMinneapolis’ African American northside. It was owned by Graphic Services,Inc., a general printing and magazinepublishing firm in Northeast Minneapolis.Al McFarlane, headed the Midwest PublicRelations division of Graphic Services.McFarlane, a 26 year-old media enthusiast, had previously worked for the St. PaulPioneer Press as a reporter and for GeneralMills in public relations. He purchasedrights to Insight News in 1975 and beganpublishing as a community newspaper in1976.Conceived as a free to the reader, advertiser supported newspaper, InsightNews was at the forefront of a burgeoningneighborhood and community newspaperindustry in the Twin Cities.ABOVE: Al McFarlanehosts the weekly radioshow Conversationswith Al McFarlaneInsight News found its niche by providingconcentrated distribution, both doorto-door and newsstand delivery, incommunities that had the least effectivepenetration by the daily newspapers.(noun)In addition, Insight News tackled tougherstories than its competitors, with a strident, yet, professional voice. Insight Newschampioned the idea of culture as anasset, not a liability, in a marketplace thatwould soon be transformed by waves ofimmigration of African Americans fromChicago, Gary, IN and Kansas City, andby Africans from, Lagos, Accra, Mogadishu and Addis Ababa, joined by Spanish speakingimmigrants from the Caribbean, Central and South America, and by Asian immigrantsfrom Vietnam, Laos, Thailand and Cambodia.1. The capacity to discernthe true nature of asituation; penetration.McFarlane and Insight News supported the creation of other newspapers servingcommunities of color. He organized ethnic newspaper owners to form the MinnesotaMinority Media Coalition.IN·SIGHT2. The act or outcome ofgrasping the inward orhidden nature of thingsor of perceiving in anintuitive manner. In 1996 Insight News became the first African American-owned publication in Minnesotato establish a presence on the World Wide Web. As one of only a handful of Blacknewspapers on the Internet, Insight News has enabled readers all over the world access toits unique brand of journalism. In 1997 Insight News once again distinguished itself from its competitors by initiating aseries of public policy forums. In partnership with community radio station KMOJ, InsightNews brought the people who would serve the community in elected office, in educationand in business to meet African American voters and consumers face to face.1815 Bryant Avenue North, Minneapolis, MN Phone: 612-588-1313 Fax: 612-588-2031 sales@insightnews.com

RELATIONSHIP MARKETINGIn business as in life, quite often thequestion is not whether, but how?Forward thinking marketers no longer askwhether there is a viable opportunity inmarketing to Black consumers. Now, thequestion is simple. How can I establish andgrow market share in the most dynamicsegment of the consumer purchasingmarketplace? At INSIGHT NEWS, we’ve developed areputation over our 39 year history ofasking—and answering—hard questionsfor our readers and our advertisers.Along the way, we at INSIGHTNEWS have found that our unflinchingcommitment to our business and socialcommunities has created dividends forour publications: trust and loyalty. Wehave discovered our gift for buildingrelationships between ourselves and ourcommunity, and between our communityand our advertisers.BUSINESS MISSION:Providing preferredaccess to Blackconsumers forbusinesses, agencies, and organizations.EDITORIAL MISSION:Information,Instruction,Inspiration in auser-friendly,culturally relevantcommunicationsvehicle.According to market research performedby Market Intelligence, Inc., reader loyaltyis the foundation of our relationship with108,000 INSIGHT NEWS readers. This loyalty, while priceless to us as anews gathering entity, was quantified byMarket Intelligence, as a relationshipwith a bottom line well in excess of 1,300,000,000 estimated buying power ofBlack people in the Twin Cities. Most important to us, were findings that, in an era where many are cynical about themedia, the majority of our readers trust and rely on the contents of our publications. We attribute such loyalty to the fact that INSIGHT NEWS has grown up with ourcommunity. From humble North Minneapolis beginnings, in 1974, INSIGHT NEWShas grown into a chain of three publications (Insight News, Greater Southside, and St.Paul) which serves the metro area’s entire African American community and growingpopulations in Duluth, Rochester, St. Cloud, Worthington and Mankato.INSIGHT NEWS, owned by McFarlane Media, is a major part of a communications group, with over a million dollars in revenue. We like to say our good fortune is a reflection of our neighbors. INSIGHT NEWS readersown cars, homes, travel and shop at levels equal to or greater than the general population.1815 Bryant Avenue North, Minneapolis, MN Phone: 612-588-1313 Fax: 612-588-2031 sales@insightnews.com
