TO INTEGRALBRITANNIASummit on the Future of Great BritainKeith E. Rice

The Centre for Human Emergence UK (CHE-UK) wasborn on 26 June 2009 in a basement room of the HolidayInn, Oxford Circus, London. It was formally launched thenext day at the ‘Regent’s Summit on the Future of the UK’,a 2-day event (27-28 June) at Regent’s College. This is thestory of that Summit.CHE-UK is an umbrella entity that sponsors what is knownas MeshWORKS solutions, a process that enables agrouping of people to tap into grassroots and other initiativesto design solutions to complex issues by mobilising all ofthe stakeholders to act in common cause. The intent is toreplace ad hoc, piecemeal, and fragmented efforts withapproaches that integrate, synergize, and align all theresources. “This,” according to Don Beck, co-developer ofSpiral Dynamics and leader of the Spiral Dynamics Integralmovement, “results in efforts that can focus their resourceslike laser beams on the steps, stages, and waves of humanemergence. Further, it promotes a rich understanding ofways to enhance organisations, groups, and social structuresin all domains and manifestations of scale. With the multipleworldviews and memetic codes that Spiral DynamicsIntegral uniquely provides, we aim to create maps, designsystems and structures, and craft natural habitats that enablethe wisdom and collective intelligence necessary for focusedactions to come through. This is how we best resolve thecrises and dilemmas facing us at this current stage of ourevolution, both nationally and globally. And, this is how webest design the future of any society, culture, nation-state, oreven planet.”The basics of Spiral Dynamics, with Coping Systems matched to Life Conditions

There were two main strands which led to that meeting atthe Holiday Inn. The first was Don Beck’s strategic masterplan for facilitating the development of Centres of HumanEmergence in key spots all around the world. Beck has beenlaunching these Centres for the past five to six years. Theimpetus to design one for the United Kingdom first occurredin an email conversation with Rachel Castagne in late 2008within the context of the experience the Dutch were havingin dealing with fundamentalism. Each of the Centres depends heavily on local, indigenousleadership and management since it is assumed that thesepeople both understand the unique problems in theirsociety and, in addition, are the best equipped to create andimplement effective solutions. The process depends on newways to make collective decisions that have been adaptedfrom the value engineering/value management process withadditional insights from the work of Ichak Adizes. Adizesintroduced the concept of ‘CAPI’ - Coalescing (bringingtogether) as a means of getting people with Authority, therepresentatives with the Power to implement or impedethe decisions of those with Authority, and those whoInfluence how Authority and Power work together in agiven context. With CAPI located around the same table, theprocess then involves looking up and down the ‘spine’ of theSpiral to determine the health of each of the world views inorder to address their issues at those levels of complexity. Thus, the emphasis is not on the usual horse-trading in bigpower negotiation, or even softer social engineering andregeneration efforts, over which interests get to further theirown agendas. This provides a fresh approach to actuallysolving real problems by a focus on what actually needs tobe done. CAPI thinking will then assign the most competentat the various levels who can speak that language, and designsolutions that actually fit the problems. This has lead to whatDon Beck describes as ‘2nd Tier thinking’ but used to address1st Tier needs and issues.Beck developed this entire process in part from his morethan two decades of work applying the concepts of ClareW. Graves—now encapsulated in Spiral Dynamics—toloosening the log-jam of Apartheid in late 1980s/early 1990sSouth Africa. For a summary of Don’s work in that majortransformation see www.integratedsociopsychology.net/don beck-southafrica.htmlAll of the Centres activated thus far are making a profounddifference in their respective environments. Arguably thehighest profile ones are The Netherlands and the MiddleEast. Substantial inroads have been made into the Dutchgovernment, under the leadership of Peter Merry and anumber of others in CHE-Netherlands. Merry and Beckorganized a series of Dutch Summits on Fundamentalismand the final event attracted 900 Dutch leaders. The work ofElza Maalouf and Beck, in the Middle Eastern Centre, hasresulted in a major project to uplift Palestine through a seriesof developmental programs and a major summit on February2, 2008 in Bethlehem involving 700 Palestinian leaders. They have also been active with various groups in Israelsince one must deal with the dance both within both societiesand between them as well. You can read about their effortsat www.buildpalestine.org and www.integralisrael.org. Formore on the CHEs in general, see www.humanemergence.org/The second strand to 26 June was a dialogue Jon Freemanand I had been having since December 2007. Jon is a formerIT Director turned change consultant and coach/trainer He isalso author of ‘God’s Ecology’, which he describes in SDiterms as “the science of the 2nd Tier”. After long training andcertification in the Spiral Dynamics model, he wanted to setup some kind of network for those who use it to continuethe impact of various training programs. It was at this pointthat he got in contact with me in Yorkshire where I wasdividing my time between teaching academic Psychologyand carrying out consultancy and therapy activities basedprincipally on SDi.Spiral Dynamics in the UKThe history of SD in the UK really began in 1998 with theformer Business Link in Wakefield bringing Don Beckand his then business partner across from Texas to run theirintroductory SD-1 course. As a consequence of this, a numberof people got involved with SD in varying degrees. For mepersonally, that SD-1 programme was a major turning pointin my life. The ‘HemsMESH’ project eventually emergedfrom the consequences of that 1998 programme, using SDto look at youth employability issues in the former coalfieldsof South East Wakefield. Beck oversaw the project, whichincluded myself and was led by Christopher ‘Cookie’Cooke. Unfortunately, the project never got beyond its pilotphase, due to changes in UK government support for socialregeneration and businesses, which ended our funding. Formore on HemsMESH, see entually a potential new focus began to emerge. Myconversations with Jon about a possible UK conferenceconverged with Rachel Castagne’s encouragement for Donto reinvigorate Spiral Dynamics training in the UK. Rachel, who was certified in SDi in 2005, brings the artistic sense of adesigner/maker, along with years of experiences in collectivedecision-making (Scott Peck) and authentic communication,to the ‘Future of the UK’ project. She not only is becominginvolved in many aspects of Spiral Dynamics, but has

societies before world centrism or even global views can berealised. Such was the passion in the room at the end of theday that Jon collected over 60 names of people who wantedto be involved in further activity. Within days Jon had set upthe SD-UK yahoo groups e-list and began to plan for a moreformal, two-day summit.Through their support for the event, and Rachel’s assistanceat a course Don was delivering at Schumacher College thefollowing week, a real trust and rapport developed and soonDon was talking about CHE-UK and the next stage in a fiveevent process. There were others involved. RosemaryWilkie, a children’s author; had been writing articles andgiving talks on SDi since 2004. In 2008 she and Jon hadattended the ‘Training of Trainers’ run by Christopher Cookein Switzerland.Rachel at the Summitmentored Don and others in new expressions of spiritualityand Holistic Health. Rachel and Jon had known each otherfor a decade, sporadically meeting on various courses(including SDi certifications). When Don and Rachel announced the plans for a one-dayexploratory futures workshop on 14 March at EnlightenNext’sLondon Window venue, the efforts came together.EnlightenNext and the Integral Circle did an excellent job ofpromoting the event, and a full house of nearly100 peoplecrowded in at the Window. During the session, which had astrong focus on practical applications, Don threw down thegauntlet, challenging us to do something for our country ina time of crises. As a provocative stimulus, Don presenteda music video by Norman Lear entitled ‘Born AgainAmerican.’ The theme dealt with the rediscovery of all thatis best in being American. His challenge to us was: whatwould the British equivalent of ‘Born Again American’ be?At first many thought falsely that Beck, who is from Texas, was trying to promote Americanism. Rather, it was to serveas a model for what could be done in other cultures andLynne at a No 10 galaLynne Sedgmore CBE came via a slightly different route. The former CEO of the Centre for Excellence in Leadership(CEL), with a profile includes work as a consultant to theDowning Street Cabinet Office, she had simply decided thatshe needed Don Beck to help her organisation through achange process. A deep mutual respect developed from theirworking together. The last piece of the original jigsaw was Ian McDonald ofthe Cheshire-based Integral Life Centre and business partnerof David Taylor who had been on the fringes of HemsMESH.Both Ian and David have run regular SDi events in Cheshireand Yorkshire. Ian feels strongly the time is now right toback the proliferation of SDi in the UK.It was this sextet, which met with Don Beck in the HolidayInn meeting room on 26 June and brought CHE-UK to life.Rachel, Jon and Don planning the Summit

LIFECONDITIONSPRIORITYCODESBELIEFS ANDBEHAVIORProblems andChallenges ofExistenceValue SystemsandWorld ViewsManifestationsof thePriority Codes1.0 - 8.0How People ThinkWhat People ThinkWhat People DoLife Conditions related to Priority Codes related to Beliefs and BehaviourRegent’s CollegeIn order to facilitate the experiences at Regents’c College, athree-part program was designed, one that follows classicSpiral Dynamics sequences: Life Conditions, Priority Codes, and Beliefs and Behaviours.Since 14 March Britain had learned the cost to the NationalDebt of the banks ‘bail-out’ in the Fall, that the American armywas having to shore up the British army in Helmand provinceand that many of our politicians treated their expenses asadditional income to be leveraged as advantageously aspossible.Small wonder that some people expressed real anger at thecurrent situation when Don initiated the Summit with a‘What’s wrong?’ task-and-discussion.Rachel and Jon assisted Don with leading the event and Lynnegave a ‘State of the Kingdom’ address, depicting a politicalleadership struggling to get beyond BLUE-ORANGE,with a Civil Service that was competitively RED and rulebound BLUE and little capability in the system to manageany transition through healthy GREEN or into YELLOWcomplexity of thinking.About 50 people joined usto get a feel for what the realissues are confronting the UKand what we might do aboutthem. The general consensuswas that in the UK a lot of thepositive influence of the BLUEvMEME has been diminishedby the emergence of GREEN (aLynne making her State of not-uncommon pattern in muchof North America and Westernthe Kingdom addressEurope). This weakening ofBLUE has had a number of negative effects—ones especiallynoted were: The lack of discipline in our culture, particularlyamongst young people—resulting in RED excessessuch as binge drinking and violent rowdiness on ourcity centre streets at weekends,

The collapse of effective regulation in our financialmarkets, resulting in toxic ORANGE taking the kindof foolish gambles on debt and investment whichhave brought the banking systems to their knees, The RED, thoughtless greed of many politiciansmilking the expenses system to and beyond itslimits—with some clearly having committed fraud. The ‘expenses scandal’, it was generally agreed, served asthe tipping point for so much anger amongst the generalpopulation that has been building up, suppressed andsimmering, for so long. As a kingdom, we are humiliated, outraged and in one hell of a mess. These reflect the currentLife Conditions and Challenges of Existence in the UK.Interestingly, in our discussion groups the sense of an evendeeper malaise began to emerge as we talked about what itmean to be British the nature of the British identity. Thesource of that malaise, it was felt, was the loss of Empire.Britain through the16th-19th Centuries was an invader anda conqueror. With our Empire eventually stretching over athird of the habitable globe, much of the world’s story in thattime was our story. There was belief in ourselves and thereligions we espoused—all those Christian missionaries!—which fed a stream of great innovations, from the roadbuilding of Thomas Telford to the evolutionary theories ofCharles Darwin, to the stabilising influence of John Wesleyand “Method-ism,” too the astounding engineering feats ofIsambard Kingdom Brunel. A sense of: “We are British. Wecan do.”It was at this point that Don began to introduce the SpiralDynamics framework as a lens through which to perceivethe problems, and possible solutions. Just as Einsteinremarked that we cannot use the same system that producedthe problems to solve them, Don began to lay out the SDitemplate through which to both understand the dynamics ofdecline in a society, as well as the pathway to emergence. This is the framework he used successful in 63 trips to SouthLooking through Beck’s Yellow Glasses to see coloursAfrica and is presently using in the Middle East. These arethe Priority Codes necessary in dealing with Life conditionsand the Problems of Existence. What made these discussions particularly astonishingwere that there were people in the room from the formerEmpire—Asians, West Indians, etc.—whose grandparentsand great-grandparents would have been subjects of Britishcolonialism and its many indignities. But nobody got upset.Nobody got overly-emotional. Nobody wanted to decrythe Empire and rake over the ‘evil coals’. Everybody wascompletely focussed on the collective character of the Britishpsyche, where it was now and why and what needed to bedone to lead that British character to a new place. These were truly 2nd Tier discussions that transcendedpersonality and history. Truly, truly remarkable! It was at thispoint that the group broke up into teams to list and identifythe unique Beliefs & Behaviours that have produced somany successful developments within Great Britain. In discussing the nature of the British character, we alsoidentified many positives. We are and remain: Leaders in many, many ways Great innovators Quirky and eccentric—often precursors toinnovation Resilient and supportive of each other in faceof external threat—e.g., the ‘Blitz Spirit’ beingrediscovered in the aftermath of the 2005 terroristbombs in London. Under pressure, the identity ofthe tribe expands to include all on our side. Humour-full—we can usually see the humour andirony in most things and we don’t usually takeourselves too seriously At the centre of the world, a bridge between Europe,America and the Commonwealth—as Don Beckpointed out, this is in language and culture as wellas geographyJon Freeman commented later that he thought there was astronger than usual sense of emergent TURQUOISE in theroom. He particularly drew attention to the need to rediscoverhonourable behaviour after the expenses scandal— a searchfor our spiritual roots in the myths of Camelot, the RoundTable and the Quest for the Holy Grail. Don’s use of movie‘Chariots of Fire’ as teaching example also brought echoesof Blake’s poem, “Jerusalem”, with England’s “mountainsgreen” as a place for the Divine Countenance.   Thisexperience cut deeply into many especially the song “I aman Englishman” that was sung by Harold Abraham, who was

Jewish, indicating that one need not be from the Anglo-Saxonroots to be truly “British.” This generated a fascinating andrich conversation as to what is the nature of “British Blue,”and that one of the unique and powerful aspect of “this land”is that many can own it, or be owned by it, who express manydiverse genetic or cultural background and origins. Being“English” or “British” means that specific value systemsare embraced, that can run throughout the Commonwealth, and extend even into English speaking worlds. These arethe essential codes that emanated from this small island andextend around the world. In this sense, “The sun never setson the British soul.”These exercises gave us the sense that there is still muchBritain has to give the world but, to do that, we have to sortout our current problems and believe in ourselves again. AsRosemary Wilkie put it: “We have had a great story. Now weneed a new great story.”But our new story has no place for the prejudices, discriminations and abuses that have sometimes sulliedour past. One of the most interesting tales of the weekendwas one with which Rachel Castagne effectively closed thesummit. She had been to a folk festival recently. One of theperformers, the traditional singing legend June Tabor, hadasked the audience what it meant to be English. After somerepartee and banter, Tabor answered her own question: “Ifyou love this land, then you’re English.” Here, CHE-UKextends that concept to encompass ‘British’.What’s Next?At the end of the 2 days, we hadn’t come up with magicsolutions. We didn’t have an agenda to present toGovernment. Those things will come in time, but we havemade a start on serious work to be followed through incollaborative ventures and further summits.CHE-UK will host the 4th Annual EuroConfab at Gatwickon the outskirts of London 23-25 October 2009, with Donand others facilitating an SDi-1 in the 3 days before. Thefirst 3 EuroConfabs were held in The Hague and CHE-NLare giving us much support. We expect a number of themand various other continental cousins to join us at Gatwick. As Rachel puts it: “CHE-UK can link with and tap into theexperience of CHE Netherlands and other MeshWORKSsworldwide, building on something that has already begun.”Rachel concluded Summit-1with a reference to the spiritualityof the calling which transcends the materialistic and exists asan element within the “field” itself. Many were truly inspiredwith her words.Several leading members of CHE-UK are committed toactivities promoting SDi as preliminaries to October. Indeed, since the Summit Rosemary Wilkie has already run a oneday introductory workshop and has more in the pipeline! In support of the collaborative work, the SD-UK yahoo listis giving way to the Centre of Human Emergence Ning site. This is helmed by Willa Geertsma, a Dutch-American residentin the UK who believes in the British and their potential. Anopen-access public web site, www.humanemergence.org.uk,is being created to promote the work of CHE-UK.These are turbulent times in the UK and they will bringchange. After the crises and scandals, the general electionnext year will be one of the most open and unpredictable indecades. We expect many new faces in Parliament ready andwanting to do business with ‘Change’. With the quality ofpeople getting to grips with Spiral Dynamics in CHE-UK,we anticipate influencing that ‘Change’ in many ways and atmany levels and hope for many more to join us in doing so.As the great social anthropologist Margaret Mead famouslysaid: “A small group of thoughtful people can change theworld, Indeed it’s the only thing that ever has.”Watch this space!Co-founder, National Values Center, Denton, Texas Founder/CEO, The Spiral Dynamics Group, Inc.Founder/President, Institure for Values and Culture Faculty, Adizes Graduate School, Santa BarbaraPhone: 940.383.1209 940.300.6363 drbeck@attglobal.net or info@spiraldynamics.netDon Edward Beck, Ph.D.
