November 1-7“1. Scripture Hop – Follow instructions on page 3 below for a scripture hop for D&C 128:19. Explain that the gospelbrings joy to people alive now as well as people who are not alive anymore!2. Take Especial Care of Your Family – From the manual: Read Doctrine and Covenants 126:3 to the children, emphasizing the phrase “take especial care of your family.” What does it mean to take care of our families? Helpthe children think of ways they can show love to their family members. Let everyone draw pictures of their family (you can use blank paper or print up page 4 below). Have each person share one reason why they love their family and one way they can take care of theirfamily.3. Baptisms for the Dead – Did you know that we can also take care of family members who aren’t alive anymore? From the manual: Show the video “The Baptism of Jesus” (ChurchofJesusChrist.org). Ask the children ifthey have ever seen someone get baptized. What do they remember about it? Use the video to show thechildren that when we are baptized, we go all the way under the water and then back up, just like Jesusdid. Open to Doctrine and Covenants 128:12, and explain that Joseph Smith taught that being baptizedreminds us of the Resurrection. From the manual: Tell the children about someone you know (such as an ancestor) who died withoutbeing baptized. Read Doctrine and Covenants 128:5, and let them take turns holding a picture of atemple baptismal font (see this week’s outline in Come, Follow Me—For Individuals and Families). Testifythat Heavenly Father allows us to be baptized on earth for people who are dead. This way all of God’schildren can be baptized and make covenants with Him.4. Stuffed Animal Baptism Activity – Use the printouts and follow the directions on page 5 below to act outbaptisms for the dead using stuffed animals. You could also use plastic figurines in a container of water if youwant to actually show how one person gets baptized to help others in the spirit world. Recording Sheet- Use the checklist recording sheet on page 6 below if you want to have some fun practicingrecording baptisms for the dead. Write the names of the stuffed animals who need to have their baptismwork done for them on the lines, and then put a sticker or a checkmark in the square by their name as eachbaptism is done. Cheer as each baptism is performed and recorded!

5. Song – Watch/sing with “Family History – I Am Doing It” Sing-a-long video6. Paper Chain – From the manual: Doctrine and Covenants 128:18 Consider making a paper chain with familymembers’ and ancestors’ names on each link to show how family history and temple work creates a “weldinglink” connecting us with our ancestors. Maybe you could do some research on FamilySearch.org to find additionalfamily members and see how long your chain grows. The primary manual has these paper chains you can print to get started. Any of the following could be good videos to watch while making these: “Their Hearts Are Bound to You” “A Sacrifice of Time” “The Promised Blessings of Family History” “The Promised Blessings of Family History 2”7. Dia De Los Muertos – There are some cute ideas going around right now for doing Dia De Los Muertos activitiesto study and celebrate ancestors. If you want to get fancy with this, you could set up an ofrenda like they have inthe movie Coco with pictures of ancestors, share stories about them, talk about things they liked, etc. Somepeople also make paper flowers and go all out with it, which I think is super fun! I’ve seen Dia de Los Muertoscookies in grocery stores as well, or if you search “Dia De Los Muertos cookies” in Pinterest, there are ideas formaking your own. We’ll probably just be super simple and share stories of ancestors while eating treats. Show “Courage: I Think I Get it From Him” one-minute video clip about a grandpa who showed courageat Pearl Harbor. Then talk about family/ancestors we know about, positive traits about them, and traits we might have incommon with them. If possible, eat a treat that one of our ancestors loved.More Great Free Ideas at www.theredcrystal.orgIdea from the manual: Consider using an object lesson to show that we need to help our ancestorswho were not baptized. For example, display a gift or a treat, but place it out of reach of one of thechildren. Tell that child that he or she can have the object but can’t move from his or her seat. Askthe other children what they can do to help the child receive it. Read together Doctrine andCovenants 128:15, and talk about how it relates to the object lesson.Cute key that could be used to “open” spirit prison as baptisms for the dead are performed“Baptisms for the Dead” explanation in Gospel Topics

Scripture Hop(D&C 128:19)Cut apart the following strips and spread them out far enough in a room so that the kids will need to hop from one strip to another. Make sure tokeep them in the correct order. Have them stand by the first one and help them say the top line out loud. Explain what it means. Then have themjump to the next one and do the same thing until they’ve jumped on each of them, said them out loud, and discussed them one at a time. Thenhave them start back at the beginning and practice saying the phrases from this verse in order while hopping from strip to strip again. Try going alittle faster each time. Repeat as many times as wanted/needed. These can also be used as flash cards, taped onto the wall to practice throughoutthe week, etc. Now, what do we hearIn the gospel?A voice of gladnessFor the livingAnd the dead.Note: The whole verse says, “Now, what do we hear in the gospel which we have received? A voice of gladness! A voice ofmercy from heaven; and a voice of truth out of the earth; glad tidings for the dead; a voice of gladness for the living and thedead; glad tidings of great joy. How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of those that bring glad tidings of good things, and that say unto Zion: Behold, thy God reigneth! As the dews of Carmel, so shall the knowledge of God descend uponthem!.”

I Love My Family

Acting with Stuffed Animals (Baptisms for the Dead): Place some stuffed animals in a container such as a boxor basket to represent people who weren’t baptized during their earth life. Use stuffed animals and the earth, temple, and baptism font pictures to show how living people on earth can do baptisms for the dead in thetemple to help those spirits. Open the box of stuffed animals to show how these spirits can be freed fromspirit prison through baptisms for the dead performed by others in temples on Earth. After these baptisms forthe dead are performed, move those stuffed animals from the box/basket to a picture of Jesus Christ.

Recording Sheet- Write the names of the stuffed animals who need to have their baptism work done for themin the temple on the lines, and then put a sticker or a checkmark in the square by their name as each baptismfor the dead is acted out. Cheer as each baptism is performed and recorded!“Whatsoever you record on earth shall be recorded in heaven.”Doctrine and Covenants 128:8
