Como swimmers performedextremely well with Matthew G receiving the Year3 Champion Boy runner up, Maeve M receiving theChampion Girl Year 5 and Aiden B Champion BoyYear 5. Mei P received Year 6 Champion Girlrunner up. A fantastic effort!! Como came third inthe overall competition which was won byApplecross. Excellent sportsmanship anddetermination was displayed by all members of ourteam. A special thank you to Mr McDonald foracting as second place judge, Miss Martinoassistant starter and Mrs Brook for assisting in thebay area. Term One Class ReportsRoom 8 Year 3Pre Primary One and TwoIn Room 8 we have been very busy in HistoryWe have had a very busy term in Pre-primary. Welearning all about celebrations in Australia andhave been learning our sounds and have learnt aaround the world. In Maths we have beendifferent sound each day. We have completed someinvestigating how to add and subtract numbers infun activities to practise our sounds like makingcolumns and the language of chance. On Fridaysmuffins for the sound M and kites for the sound K.Mrs Callaway has been teaching us lots about areaIn numeracy we have been counting every day,and 2D shapes. This term our writing focus haslearning our shapes, measuring different objects,been on persuasive writing and narratives. We havelearning what each number represents and how tobeen creating some very good stories indeed! Inwrite our numbers. We have learnt some fun songsScience we have been learning all about solids andand actions and created a volcano that erupted. Weliquids. We have made, ooze, rocky road and icehave been on a treasure hunt around the school withcups to demonstrate how things melt and freeze.real treasure at the end. We have learnt about livingWe also found out that ooze acts in a crazy way!things and what they need and explored our senses.We have had a great, busy term in Room 8. TheWe started PMP (perceptual motor program) wherestudents in Room 8we have been learning specific motor skills. Wehad a wonderful visit from Monsieur Hughes whoRoom 4 Year 5/6came and read some stories in French and taught usThis year Room 4 have had a flying start gettingsome French words. Bravo!We would like to thankinto the routine of year 5 and 6. We have been workingDesmondreally hard on our persuasive and narrative writingRoom 10 Year 4and will each be entering the South Perth YoungThis spectacular term one in Room Ten we've had aWriters Competition with our incredible narratives.very interesting time! We've done some healthyWe have started our SEPEP program whichsport, which we enjoy very much! We have plantedinvolves taking responsibility for their sportssome tomatoes in the School Community Gardenprogram in 5 teams. Each week one of the teams isfor Science. They are sure to be delicious. We'veon duty and in charge of running the volleyballlearned about some famous Australian Explorersgames versus the other teams. This gives everyoneand researched their information. We have createda chance to show their leadership skills and have afabulous narratives, based on giant things. We havehuge amount of fun at the same time! One of thealso happily welcomed a new student, from Bhutan,highlights of the term was going to attend Theinto our class. We are sure she will love Como too.Giants in Perth City to experience the amazingOur most amazing thing is the Harmony Dayperformance. We also got tomelting lots of delicious treats like chocolate,enjoy the fantastic art incursion with Urbanmarshmallows, jelly and cordial. We also madeIndigenous. Alongside all of this learning aboutslime, which sometimes acts like a solid and aIndigenous cultures, we‟ve also investigated theliquid. In History we are learning about celebrationscultures of our families. It has been so interestingand commemorations, including Australia Day andand exciting to learn of all the differentANZAC Day. We have been writing somecelebrations, population information, flags and ofconvincing persuasive texts and page turningcourse FOODS from around the world. On our lastnarratives that we are very proud of. Our class hasday of school, we held big celebration day, dressedachieved a record breaking goal of returning all ourin our nation‟s colours as we tasted different foodslibrary books every week this term, which hasfrom around the world and discussed the positivemeant George the library bear has become aeffects of multiculturalism in our community. KindergartenIt‟s been a very exciting term for our Red and BlueKindy children as they have been familiarisingthemselves with their new school surroundings,meeting and getting to know their teachers andmaking new friendships. The Kindy Kiddies havebeen learning about themselves and how they sharemany similarities as well as having manydifferences, including their unique facial features.Spot the dog and his friends have been welcomedinto our classroom and the children have had greatfun in teaching them the rules and routines of Kindylife. The children have been exploring differentmaterials and developing skills in pre literacy andnumeracy concepts including learning how to formpre writing patterns like tall man, singing favouritenursery rhymes and songs and learning how torecognise their names. They are becoming moreconfident at managing their personal items andrelying less on their teachers and parents forassistance. The term has concluded with theclassroom being transformed into scenery of eggs,Humpty Dumptys, chickens, rabbits and Easterbaskets. It‟s time for the Kindy Kids to have a wellearned rest!Room 6 Year 2Our class loves to write Acrostic Poems!In writing we have already written two, one aboutFRIENDS and the other one on EASTER.Hers an Acrostic Poem for everyone to read basedon our theme AUSTRALIA.All of us Australians in Room 6 have been so busythis term working hard on Reading and Maths andmuch more.Under and over we went into History in search ofOur Past and “My Place of Significance”photographs and doing project work on theAboriginal People.So much to learn using iPads to create a Storybookabout „Us‟ and setting goals to achieve for the yearof 2015.T &E was fantastic fun, designing models of boastusing plasticene to see if they floated or sunk inour Science experiments.Railbow Serpent was part of our “AboriginalDreamtime” literature and Reading and Writingactivities including Story Maps were so much funand even making a Rainbow Serpent for our class.Awesome Indigenous Art was done on canvasusing dot painting, during our incursion in Art.Loving Harmony Day and dressing up in nationalcostumes with our buddies and joining “Handsaround the world” to show tolerance and respect asAUSTRALIANS.Interesting things were done and now we‟relooking forward to the next term.And finally we‟d like to wish everyone a HappyEaster and Safe Holidays.Room 2 Year 1It‟s been an exciting term for children in Room 2as we have started our primary school journey. Wehave learned much in a short time and it has beengreat to make new friends with the children whohave come to Como for the first time. We beganthe term with activities based around our themes ofSummer and The Sea. We quickly learned to workhard and listen attentively as we strived to acquirenew skills in all curriculum areas.At school we have had fun doing scienceexperiments. One we found amazing. Wediscovered plants suck water to the tips of theirleaves!We have explored new app‟s on the iPads,participated in different activities with our bigbuddies and have been very happy to earn GoldenTime at the end of the week.Some of the special days we enjoyed were theUrban Indigenous Art incursion where we learnedabout art as a form of storytelling and we told ourstories on boomerangs. On two occasions we havecome to school dressed up. Harmony Day was socolourful with costumes from around the world.Our room was full of cats, chefs and cowboys/girlson the prefects‟ dress up day! We certainlyenjoyed the slushies we bought at the canteen thatday.This week we finished off the term with Easteractivities including cooking, craft and a variety ofother things. The Easter Bunny visited our schooland left some treats for us to find. It was a greatway to finish the term and we are looking forwardto a nice break with our families. Then we will berefreshed and ready to continue the journey.French NewsChers Parents / Dear ParentsWelcome to the last week of Term 1.We have been covering „Les Paques‟ / Easter forthe last 2 weeks.Two story books were read about Easter, alistening/rhyming work activity done with the Year2 and 3‟s, a great site „Paques en France‟ waslooked at and translations of French text completed,the Year 5/6‟s used their iPads to complete aworksheet on Easter – „Euroclub – French Zone‟and finally a game of Bingo / Lotto was played,depending on time.Check with your child what they have learned /covered this term and enjoy your holidays „ViveLes Vacances‟.Merci BeaucoupInstituteur de francaisM. Room 3 Year 5/6It has been a very busy term. We have beeninvolved in a variety of activities as well asbringing our own iPads to class. Students haveadjusted well to all the new knowledge andinformation they have gained throughout the termon the use of iPads.We started off the term with an excursion to the“Giants” at Langley Park in Perth. It was especiallyenjoyable being splashed by water when the girlgiant passed us in her boat.The year 5‟s have been working hard on theirNaplan preparations throughout the term while theyear 6‟s have been involved in a variety of activitiesincluding Mathematics sessions with Ms Martino.Our class leaders went to the “Grip LeadershipCourse,” and enjoyed being part of that.Harmony day was a lot of fun and it was nice to seeall the school children dressed in their colourfuloutfits.Urban Indigenous came to our school for three daysand we thoroughly enjoyed our paining and culturalsessions with them. We can‟t wait to see thefinished mural when it is displayed in the upperschool passageway.Our swimming carnival was a lot of fun. Maeve andAidan were our champion Year 5 swimmers. Theywere also successfully in the Interschool SwimmingCarnival both winning trophies for championswimmer in their divisions. It was a super effortfrom both of them.We would like to thank the parents for all theirsupport throughout the term.We wish everyone a very enjoyable Easter and afantastic holiday.Room 5 Year 2What a busy term we have had. We have mumscome in and help hear our reading so we want tothank them for listening to us each morning.We have been working on the theme, “The Past inthe Present” for our History area. We also havebeen learning about traditional Aborigines way oflife and the present Aboriginals. We had fun in ourAboriginal art class creating beautiful work withdots and lines. We even made a Rainbow Serpentfor our classroom and we wrote stories about it.In Maths we have been learning about twodimensional and three dimensional shapes. We havebeen counting and writing numbers to 1000 andbeyond.Science activities have been filled with Push/Pullactivities.Other exciting happenings have been celebratingour Harmony Day and making hands with ourbuddies and dressing up for our “C” day was funtoo.We are all now looking forward to our holidays.We hope you have had a safe and enjoyable onetoo.Room 5 Kids, Mrs Willis, Mrs Stals and MrsRuddell
