Dear SLPA student,It is my pleasure to welcome you to this exciting new chapter in your education and career path. You areembarking on a complex but rewarding field of study that will develop both your personal and professional skills inorder to prepare you for a state licensed position as a Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA). By the end ofthis program, you will have the clinical skills to help anyone learn to communicate. You will experiencebreakthrough moments, such as when a child who has never spoken before says their first words in one of yourtherapy sessions, or when you find yourself being that one person to whom a bullied middle school child canconfide in about their stuttering. In short, you will provide an invaluable service that can change people’s lives inboth big and small ways.The significant role that you will play in your future clients’ and their families’ lives comes with significantresponsibilities as well. As a member of the field of Speech-Language Pathology, you will belong to a professionthat prides itself on research-based practice of assessment and intervention for individuals with communicationdisorders. You will be responsible for maintaining knowledge and clinical skills that are informed by rigorousevidence and clinical expertise to provide the best possible care for your clients and consumers. As a licensedprofessional, you will also adhere to a code of ethics and professional behavior that are specific to the SpeechLanguage Pathology Assistant occupation, and mandated by the California Speech-Language Pathology, Audiology,and Hearing Aid Dispensers’ (SLPAHAD) Board and the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).As you will discover in the first year of the program, Speech-Language Pathology is influenced by other health andeducational disciplines, as well as federal and state policies. You will integrate concepts from the fields of childpsychology, child development, sign language, anatomy and physiology, linguistics, physics, and education.Through a carefully structured curriculum, Cerritos College SLPA students learn about the process ofcommunication, disorders of communication, and how to implement treatment plans effectively.In addition to academic knowledge of communication disorders, students will be required to complete clinicaltraining in the implementation of speech-language intervention. During these clinical experiences, you will havethe opportunity to practice your skills in clinical and/or educational settings under the mentorship of a statelicensed Speech-Language Pathologist in the Los Angeles and Orange County regions. Students who successfullycomplete both the academic and clinical portions of the program will graduate with an Associate of Science degreein Speech-Language Pathology Assisting and be eligible for state licensure with the SLPAHAD Licensing Board(www.speechandhearing.ca.gov) and certification through ASHA.This handbook is designed to orient you to the requirements of the SLPA field and the Cerritos Program. PROGRAM STATEMENTThe Cerritos College Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA) Program is an accredited program bythe California Speech-Language Pathology, Audiology, and Hearing Aid Dispensers (SLPAHAD) LicensingBoard. The SLPA program offers an opportunity to prepare for an entry-level career in speech-languagepathology through mastery of a specific body of knowledge and skills. SPEECH-LANGUAGE PATHOLOGY ASSISTANT DEPARTMENTCERTIFICATES & DEGREESThe Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA) Department offers a Speech-LanguagePathology Aide Certificate (19 units) and an Associate of Science degree in SLPA (60 units).A SLP Aide is qualified to assist the SLP department of a school, clinic, or medical center withauxiliary duties associated with serving individuals with communication disorders. Common jobresponsibilities include: clerical work, materials preparation, device maintenance, and aid SLPsduring therapy sessions. A SLP aide is not permitted to conduct therapy sessions independentlyof a SLP, and much report their supervisor to the California SLPAHAD licensing board. At least12 of the follow 19 units must be completed at Cerritos College to earn an SLP Aide Certificate: ASL 110 (American Sign Language I)CD 110 (Child Development)CD 139 (Observation, Assessment, and Positive Guidance of Child Behavior)CDSE 150 (Introduction to Children with Special Needs)SLP 101 (Introduction to Communication Disorders)SLP 105 (Speech and Language Development)Students who have successfully completed those classes may submit a petition for the SpeechLanguage Pathology Aide certificate through the office of Admissions and Records.Students who are interested in pursuing the Associate of Arts degree must complete thecourses listed above, as well as: A&P 120 (or Anatomy 150), and complete their math, reading,and writing proficiencies. Bachelor and post-baccalaurate students with degrees in speechlanguage pathology or communicative disorders may use the equivalent of Anatomy &Physiology of the Speech and Hearing Mechanism AND Neuroanatomy.Students are eligible to apply for the SLPA program if they have completed the courseworkdescribed previously with a 2.5 minimum GPA and overall 2.0 cumulative GPA for all collegecoursework.Please see the excerpt from the Cerritos College catalog on the requirements for admission tothe program below (effective Fall 2019):CC SLPA Handbook7rev. 12/2020

I. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTSA. Academic Prerequisites1. All prerequisite coursework must be completed prior to submitting anapplication. Transcripts documenting completed coursework should besubmitted with the application packet.2. Students must have completed coursework that satisfies the Reading, Writing,and Math proficiencies for the Associate of Science degree-Plan A prior tosubmitting their application.3. Students must have completed the following courses or equivalent with agrade of “C” or higher prior to submitting their application:a. General Education-Natural Science Requirement: A&P 120 (HumanAnatomy & Physiology) OR Anatomy 150: (Human Anatomy)b. General Education-Humanities Requirement: ASL 110 (American SignLanguage I)c. Graduates with foreign or Bachelor degrees in Speech-Language Pathology,Communication Sciences, or Communication Disorders will not be given priority.Recency of course work still applies. Application forms and instructions on how to submit forms are posted on the SLPA website at:https://www.cerritos.edu/slpa. The deadline for application will be posted on the webpage andapplication forms for that application cycle. The program reserves the right to adjustapplication deadlines and application processes as needed.Once a student has submitted an application, their application will be reviewed by the SLPAdepartment and related Cerritos College staff. If students meet the prerequisite courseworkand GPA requirements, they will be entered into a pool and students will be selected using arandom, computerized lottery. All required documents, including the Speech-Language Pathology Assistant Programapplication, and all official college transcripts must be in possession of the HealthOccupations Division Office by the identified deadline on the SLPA website(https://www.cerritos.edu/slpa).B. Students will be entered into an eligibility pool if they have:1. Completed the prerequisite coursework, reading, writing, and mathproficiencies2. All of the items required forclearance are at the expense of the student.Upon admission and submission of the required documentation, students will be required tocoursework and credits to complete the Associate of Science degree requirements. Even if astudent has a bachelor’s or post-baccalaureate degree in speech-languagepathology/communicative disorders and/or an associate’s degree in another major, they willstill be required to submit a petition for an Associate’s degree in SLPA in their last semester.This is also required for the state license application as a SLPA.Below lists all of the course and credit requirements for the Associate of Science degree:ASSOCIATE IN SCIENCE DEGREE REQUIREMENTSI. Students who have had more than1 academic year break in their attendance to the college will be required to adhere to the newcatalog requirements and to apply to the program.Students who have maintained active enrollment but have not completed all of the SLPAcoursework will need to meet with the SLPA department chair to review their transcript. The technical standards as statedherewith are not conditions of admission to a program of study. Rather they reflectperformance abilities that are necessary for a student to successfully complete therequirements of the specific Health Occupations program.The purpose of this document is to notify prospective Speech-Language PathologyAssistant students of these technical standards to enable them to make an informeddecision regarding enrollment in the Speech-Language Pathology Assistant program atCerritos College.The delivery of safe, effective speech and language intervention requires that studentsbe able to perform functions related to the technical standards outlined here.
