Challenges of Contaminants ofEmerging Concerns, including AntibioticResistant BacteriaWednesday 28 August 16.00-17.30 Room: M2QUESTIONS 4 SPEAKERS#WWWAMRPetra.Wallberg@formas.se 46 (0) 72-205 62 97Keynote PresentationsSwedish Research Council / Formas / Swedish National Research Programme on Antibiotic ResistanceKarin WibergCarl-Fredrik FlachSwedish University of Agricultural SciencesGothenburg UniversityTracing contaminants of emerging concernin water using the latest advances inchemical and toxicological analysis. The role of aquatic environments inevolution, transmission and surveillance ofantibiotic resistant bacteria.Summary: There is an underexplored, emerging threat to water bodies - thedischarge of large amounts of syntheticchemicals, some of which are well-known andalready identified, while a vast majority elevelsofmicropollutants jeopardize lakes and otherwater bodies as sustainable natural resources,e.g. for agricultural and as drinking waterpurposes. This calls for efficient screeningmethodology that can warn for hazards at anearly stage. This presentation focuses on howthe latest advances in mass spectrometry andtoxicological testing can be used to tracecontaminants of emerging concern in water.Summary: Large quantities of resistantbacteria are excreted by humans and animalsand reach aquatic environments, which canserve as transmission routes to new hosts. The release of antibiotics to the environmentcan also drive the evolution of antibioticresistance and thus the emergence of newresistant bacteria. In addition, analyses ofsamples from environments heavily impactedby bacteria of human origin can serve as anefficient tool for the surveillance of theantibiotic resistance situation in humanpopulations. Recent research achievementsand critical knowledge gaps within theseareas will be presented.

Flach’s research centersaround the role of wastewater and wastewater-impacted environments in emergence, selection, transmission and surveillance of antibiotic resistance. He is/has been theprincipal investigator of several grants related to these issues. He currently leads projectsfocusing on using wastewater analyses for the purpose of survey antibiotic resistantbacteria in human populations and the transmission of resistance plasmids in wastewaterenvironments. He is also a member of the steering committee and the leader of thesurveillance theme within the Centre for Antibiotic Resistance Research (CARe) at theUniversity of Gothenburg (www.care.gu.se) as well as a director of studies for the SwedishDoctoral Programme in Infections and Antibiotics (NDPIA, www.ndpia.se). Flach has beenactive in communicating research results to stakeholders in the water and health sectorsduring the last years and frequently interacts with actors from the wastewater sector, both nationally and internationally.

The availability ofwater in sufficient quantities and adequatequality is indeed a public issue of highpriority, addressing a complex and globalchallenge.Asinter-governmentalcollaborative platform engaging 23countries members, and 8 other partneringcountries, the Water JPI is implementingresearch and innovation actions aroundscientific gaps defined in its StrategicResearch and Innovation Agenda (SRIA). Todate, the Water JPI has supported fivetransnational calls (70 projects for 63million euro), a knowledge hub onContaminants of Emerging Concern andsome other activities (cluster of nationallyfunded projects, information platform onresearch infrastructures or mobilityschemes). In the same year, the EU established the JointProgramming Initiative on ther with 11 European member countries.Today, JPIAMR is a global collaborativeplatform and has engaged 27 nations to curbantibiotic resistance (AMR) with a One Healthapproach. The initiative coordinates nationalfunding to support transnational research andactivities within the six priority areas of theshared JPIAMR Strategic Research andInnovation Agenda – therapeutics, diagnostics, surveillance, transmission, environment andinterventions. To date JPIAMR has supportedresearch and network projects, with funding ofapproximately 67 million euro. Also in 2011, the Joint Programming InitiativeHealthy and Productive Seas and Oceans (JPIOceans; www.jpi-oceans.eu) was establishedas an intergovernmental platform, open to allEU Member States and Associated Countrieswho invest in marine and maritime research. The platform provides its member countrieswith a shared voice and action plan to addresscomplex ocean- related societal challenges thatcannot be solved at the national level. Thestrategy of JPI Oceans is defined by its SRIAwhich was published in May 2015. The SRIApresents ten Strategic Areas, developed andagreed by JPI Oceans as strategic priorities formarine and maritime research in Europe.
