Frame ofreference1.6Commentary onqualification structureLevel 3 Diploma in Art &DesignThe qualification will bedelivered through nine unitsover a nominal one-year period.Units will vary in length toensure that the qualificationprovides an appropriatelysupportive experience asstudents explore the diagnosticexperience in preparation forfurther education or employment.Centres delivering the qualificationshould design assignments thatwill provide the learningnecessary for students toachieve the assessment criteria. The length and complexity ofthe assignments, and thespecific art and design activitieswhich students are asked toengage with, are at thediscretion of the centre.Units 1–4 should be linkedtogether to form a coherentpattern of teaching and learningthat will provide students withan introduction to the skills, knowledge and understandingnecessary to explore, enhance and sustain theircreative development anddetermine a standard fromwhich all other activities andlearning will develop.Unit 1 will develop students’skills, knowledge andunderstanding in order tosupport confident applicationof visual language in art anddesign activities.Unit 2 will provide students withan introduction to a range ofresearch activities and relatedskills appropriate to art anddesign. It will also introduce theimportance of oral and writtencommunication as an integralpart of the art and designprocess.Unit 3 will provide students withan introduction to the criticaland contextual awarenessrelevant to art and design. It willalso reiterate the importance oforal and written communicationas an integral part of the art anddesign process.Unit 4 will provide studentswith an introduction to a rangeof art and design materialsand processes, to enablean understanding of theirparticular characteristics anduses, and the related technicalskills necessary to recordexperiences and articulateideas.Units 5–7 require students toapply their newly acquired skills, knowledge and understandingin a series of more complexand demanding assignments intwo and three dimensions andthrough time-based formats.Whilst beginning to recognisethe unique characteristicsof specific art and designactivities, they will also beencouraged to recogniseand understand their sharedcharacteristics.Unit 5 will provide students withan opportunity to integratethe skills, knowledge andunderstanding acquired inUnits 1–4, to propose a solutionto a two-dimensional art anddesign problem.Unit 6 will provide students withan opportunity to integratethe skills, knowledge andunderstanding acquired inUnits 1–4, to propose a solutionto a three-dimensional art anddesign problem.Unit 7 will provide students withan opportunity to integratethe skills, knowledge andunderstanding acquired inUnits 1–4, to propose a solutionto a time-based art and designproblem.Unit 8 will provide studentswith a measure of self-directedlearning in the development ofa substantial art and designproject. The unit requiresstudents to apply the skills, knowledge and understandingthey have developed in Units1–7, to develop an art anddesign project. It will providethem with an opportunity toclarify their longer-term goals,by choosing an art and designactivity to explore in greaterdepth.Unit 9 may be linked tolearning for Unit 8 and usesa coherent sequence oflearning experiences to providestudents with an introductionto a range of progressionopportunities available withinart and design education andemployment.5

Frame ofreferenceLevel 3 ExtendedDiploma in Art & DesignThe qualification will bedelivered through 13 unitsover a nominal two-year period.Units 1–9 are described onthe preceding page and Units10–14 below.Unit 10 will provide studentswith an opportunity todevelop focused, in-depth,understanding of thecharacteristics, complexity andcontexts that define art anddesign activity.Through exploration of artand design characteristicsand contexts, the unit willrequire students to enter intoa more formal dialogue ofpersonal interrogation andunderstanding designed toconfirm strengths, enthusiasmsand ambitions.Unit 11 will provide a focussedperiod for students to researchhigher educational and relatedemployment opportunitiesand the requisite practical, intellectual and communicationskills necessary for progressionto art and design HigherEducation or employment.Unit 12 requires students todevelop an in-depth knowledgeand understanding of a specificart and design activity and themeans by which the audiencefor that activity might bereached and addressed.6The unit provides an opportunityfor them to demonstratean understanding of anaudience for their chosenarea of art and design throughengagement with a complexproblem solving task or tasks.Students are expected to takeownership of their learningby responding positively tothe greater opportunities forindividual expression andcreativity afforded.Units 13 and 14 requirestudents to demonstrate theirability to select, organise andcomplete an art and designproject that reflects the leveland standard of their learning.Units 13 and 14, achieved atLevel 3 or Level 4 respectively, require students to affirmappropriate maturity bytaking significantly greaterresponsibility for their ownlearning, demonstratingthe self motivation andindependent capacity toinitiate, research, develop, implement, reflect andevaluate a substantial projectin preparation for HigherEducation, or employmentin their chosen art anddesign activity.1.7InductionCentres should provide theirstudents with an induction toensure that:A course handbook and anyother supporting material tofacilitate effective learningis providedTimetabling arrangementsare clarifiedAcademic tutorial systemsare providedLearning support needs areidentified and provided foras appropriateCourse structures andassessment requirementsare explained for bothinternal assessment andexternal moderationHealth and safety regulationsand procedures are explained.

Frame ofreference1.8Planning the programmeUAL Awarding Body supportsinnovative approaches toprogramme design and deliverywithin the broad context ofthe qualification aims, learningoutcomes and assessmentcriteria. The Level 3 ExtendedDiploma in Art & Design cantherefore be delivered in avariety of ways. The qualification has beenwritten to support a range ofdelivery options. The 13 unitsfocus on underpinningprocesses and principles anddeliberately avoid thespecification of detailedcontexts in which deliveryshould occur.Although the intention of thequalification is to give studentsaccess to a range of disciplines,it is entirely feasible anddesirable that more specialistdelivery models could be usedto support the development ofstudents who begin the coursewith a clearer understandingof the disciplines in which theywant to work. Delivery couldtherefore occur in the context ofa particular specialist area suchas fashion or graphic design. However, delivery shouldbe coherent and integrated, progressively focused uponthe relationship between thedevelopment of students’ workand the choices they make.As the programme progresses, students must be able todemonstrate achievement inlearning and observingand practical experience in artand design, paralleled byan increasing ability tocoherently synthesise theirexperiences in preparationfor the next stages of theirprofessional development.Students should develop a skillsbase that acknowledges theinterrelationship of the critical, theoretical and practical. They should understand therelationship between thedevelopment of their practiceand the choices they makeregarding future progression. It is anticipated that centreswill resource learning withinthe areas of art, graphic design,3D design, fashion and textilesand media. Rather than beingexhaustive, this list is a guideto the general areas of activityrequired to meet the aims of thequalifications and ensure agenuine diagnostic andimmersive experience.Centres planning to deliver thequalification should familiarisethemselves with the 13 unitsand associated support materialincluding:Unit aimsUnit learning outcomesUnit assessment criteriaUnit indicative contentUnit teaching strategies andlearning activitiesMethods of assessment andevidence of achievementNecessary resourcesGrading criteria.Centres delivering thequalification are not expected toprovide identical programmes, but will be required to coverthe same learning outcomesand assessment criteria toensure coherent sequencing,(patterns of teaching, learningand assessment which arecontinuous, interactive andintegrative) rather than afragmented approach acrossdiverse disciplines.7

Frame ofreference1.9Personal andprofessionaldevelopmentThe Diploma and ExtendedDiploma in Art & Designwill provide students withopportunities to developand apply a broad rangeof transferable skills byencouraging an ethos ofpersonal and professionaldevelopment.
