Children’s Board of Hillsborough County Focus AreasThe Children’s Board of Hillsborough County has been investing inchildren and families for more than 30 years. Created by referendumin 1988, the Children’s Board funds programs and services at thecommunity level to support children and families. Children’s Boardinvestments ensure:Children are Developmentally on Track:Early Identification of developmental needs for children birth to agefive is essential for optimizing a child’s learning potential and allowscaregivers to learn more about their child’s development.Children are Healthy and Safe:Early preventative health and education; preparing a family todevelop nurturing and healthy habits which are enhanced bycoordination with community partners including healthcare systemsand primary care providers.Children are Ready to Learn and Succeed:School readiness and academic support for children designed ina way that fosters academic readiness by age eight. Activities maysupport character development, provide positive role modeling, andmotivate students to learn in safe environments.Provides Family Support:Support for the whole family by developing informal supports,stability and overall well-being. These relationships establish thefoundation for secure attachments and future physical, cognitiveand social-emotional health.1

Governing BoardThe Children’s Board is governed by ten Board members from thelocal community. Five are “ex-officio”, meaning they serve by virtueof the office they hold. The remaining five members of the Boardare Hillsborough County citizens appointed by the Governor ofFlorida. The Governing Board hires the Executive Director, who isresponsible for the leadership and management of the agency.MissionThe Children’s Board of Hillsborough County invests in partnershipsand quality programs to support the success of all children inHillsborough County.VisionHillsborough County will be recognized as one of the top places inthe nation to raise children.Conference CenterOur administrative building on Palm Avenue also serves asa conference center available at no cost to neighborhood,community, and civic organizations. CHILDREN’S BOARD FAMILYRESOURCE CENTERSChildren’s Board Family Resource CentersProgram DescriptionThe Children’s Board Family Resource Centers provide opportunities forparents or caregivers and their children to participate in parent / childdevelopmental playgroups, developmental screenings, and health andsafety education. In addition, pediatric well-child visits, immunizationsand hearing or vision screening are provided for qualifying families. Thecenters have relationships with community partners and volunteers tofocus on supporting families with children from birth to eighteen yearsold. ABE BROWN MINISTRIESFamily Reunification Video VisitationProgram DescriptionThe Family Reunification Video Visitation program provides a uniqueopportunity for children to participate in live visitation via video, withtheir incarcerated parent. The children are offered an opportunity tosee and speak with their mothers and fathers for an allotted timeweekly via live video conferencing. In addition to the video visitations,participants enrolled in the program have the opportunity totravel to the prisons quarterly. The children and caregivers get theopportunity to interact with the incarcerated parent during the visitand caregivers have access to case management services.The Program works in conjunction with the Abe Brown Ministries’Ready4Work Hillsborough program, to provide case managementservices that promote bonding and attachment to families comprisedof caregivers (for those currently incarcerated or non-custodial)and/or formerly incarcerated parents with (non-dependency)children ages birth to age fourteen.
