ABOUT UGANDA MANAGEMENT INSTITUTEUganda Management Institute (UMI) is aNational Branch for Training, Research andConsultancy in the field of Administration,Leadership and Management. Officiallyopened on October7, 1969 as the InstitutePublic Administration (IPA), the Institute wasmandated to conduct intensive in-servicetraining to quickly develop managementcapacity in the public service. DISTANCE LEARNING PROGRAMMES AT UMIGENERAL INFORMATIONThe Distance Learning Departmentis in charge of running distancelearning programmes.Within the department, the Course Managercoordinates these programmes includingaddressing participants’ queries, complaints,handling coursework flow, remedial teaching,and communication on examination- relatedissues. Each module has a module leader whoseresponsibilities include responding to yourqueries and feedback through email, phonecalls and office visits.You be awarded a Postgraduate Diplomacertificate of UMI after completion of twelvemodules (four basic modules, eight coremodules). The minimum completion time for theprogramme is two(2) years and the maximumcompletion time is four (4) years with eachyear being divided into two semesters. Youwill cover up to a minimum of three modulesper semester. Retaking any module attractsextra cost which can be got from the InstituteRegistrar’s office or Accounts Office.ENROLMENT AND REGISTRATIONAdmissionThe admissions requirements for the distancelearning programmes are;1. A good degree from a recognizedUniversity, OR a recognized relevantprofessional qualification and at least oneyear of working experience.2. Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE)with at least 5 passes and at least twoprincipal passes at Uganda AdvancedCertificate of Education(UACE) obtainedat the same sitting.3. If an applicant gained entrance toUniversity through other means originaldocuments to that effect should bepresented. (i) Mature Age Entrycertificate, 25 years and above andaccredited by the National Council forHigher Education (NCHE). (ii) DiplomaEntry obtained at credit/distinction levelfrom a recognised institution.4.The minimum duration for the Bachelor’sdegree should be three years.RegistrationAt the beginning of each Semester,you will visit any of the UMIBranches (Kampala, Mbarara, Guluor Mbale) of your convenience for registrationby the Institute Registrar’s Office. You will berequired to visit the institute for only two weeksper semester specially one (1) week for theorientation and the other wee k for seating forexaminationsFace to Face (Orientation) SessionYou will be required to attend a one(1) weeks face-to-face sessions fora maximum of nine (9) hours a dayand take home a coursework to be submittedonline on a stipulated date. After the face-toface session you will study on your own awayfrom the institute using the provided onlineinteractive instructional materials that include;a module handbook, recommended readinglist and any other relevant literature thatmay guide you in the learning process. Duringthis period, you will seek for assistance fromthe administration assistant, module leaders;course Manager and the Head of departmentas well as the Dean.Examination PeriodAt the end of the semester, you willconvene (either at UMI, Kampala orany other UMI Branch) for a periodof one week to sit for the end of semesterexaminations. You will also be provided a copyof the Institute’s Assessment and ExaminationRegulations and Guidelines.AssessmentParticipants will attempt two standardcourse works and one final examinationper module. SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT SCIENCESThe School of Management Sciences, whichstarted as the Higher Degrees Departmentin October 2005, has been in existence sinceJuly 1, 2013.MANDATEAccording to The Universities and OtherTertiary Institutions Act, 2001 as amendedin 2006, UMI is categorized as an “OtherDegree Awarding Institution”. In order tocarry out its mandate of offering academicdegrees, the School of Management Scienceis responsible for handling all the academicdegrees, both at Maters and PhD level.The School of Management Scienceprepares participants to lead people, thinkstrategically, and create successful privateand public organizational environments. Theschools major focus is providing participantswith competence - based educationnecessary to manage dynamic organizationsand creating critical, analytical but yetcreative thinkers. The school is also supported by a poolof several distinguished visiting professorsand lecturers drawn from all over the world.

Developing Practical and Sustainable Administration, Leadership and ManagementOrdinary Diplomas, Postgraduate, Masters and PhD ProgramsThe Academic year of the Institute is divided into two semesters. The programmes have Day, Evening or Week-endstreams, or both. The day programmes begin in August and end in April. The evening and weekend programmes beginin April and end in March 2023. Participants who complete the Postgraduate Diploma courses with at least a secondclass can proceed to do research for the Masters Degree.
