THE LOWER SCHOOLBeginning with its excellent Primary Program, CFA sets students on aneducational trajectory for success. The Lower School creates a safe and engagingcommunity and offers a well-rounded curriculum in which students can exploremany interests and develop core strengths. As a result of the program’s emphasison strategic thinking and skill formation, CFA’s research has found that LowerSchool students outperform their peers elsewhere on multiple measures. Theyshowcase their real-world learning and public speaking in exhibitions such asAnatomy Academy, the Oceans Project, the Wilmington Port Study, and BizWorld. Hallmarks of the Lower School curriculum include Orton-Gillinghaminstruction combined with Columbia University’s Readers & Writers Workshop, centers-basedmathematics, and a rich co-curricular program (art, music, Spanish, technology, and physical education).The Lower School features differentiated instruction in the classroom, supported by math and readingspecialists and guidance staff to ensure that students’ needs are met.THE MIDDLE SCHOOLThe Middle School program maintains a rigorous academiccurriculum that embraces purposeful learning by providingprograms and activities that support student growth andpreparation for their time in the Upper School. CFA’s approach toMiddle School is both developmentally responsive andacademically challenging. An advisory program nurturesinterpersonal relationships, fosters a sense of social responsibility,and gives students an opportunity to pursue leadership roleswithin the division.The curriculum includes daily instruction in language arts, math, science, social studies, Spanish orMandarin, and a choice of elective offerings, which include band, chorus, physical education and health,theater arts, visual arts, and a new strategic emphasis on STEM electives. Humanities instruction is shapedby the Essential Questions format, a framework that seeks to encourage inquiry and foster critical thinking.All aspects of the middle school experience are framed by the school-wide mission and focused by the CFAMiddle School mission: Believing that middle school is a unique period in the lives of students as they transitionfrom childhood to adolescence, Cape Fear Academy Middle School is committed to providing a developmentallyresponsive, academically challenging, and empowering community so that our students advance to our upper schoolas confident, responsible learners.THE UPPER SCHOOLThe Upper School offers a wide range of college preparatory courses, and students have significant freedomto select classes they find most inspiring and challenging. The curriculum currently includes 24 AdvancedPlacement classes, and more than 95 percent of students take at least one AP course prior to graduation.CFA is the only school in the region designated by the College Board to implement the AP CapstoneDiploma Program. Upper School students can take on leadership roles in the Student GovernmentAssociation, Honor Council, clubs, and publications, and all Upper School students are required to6

complete a minimum of nine hours of community service persemester. Students can also distinguish themselves by taking partin the Summer Internship Program, which provides anopportunity for outstanding CFA students to learn, explore, andprepare for their future through diverse intern career opportunitieswithin an authentic work environment.Characterized by its commitment to building the independenceand responsibility students need for college and career, the UpperSchool curriculum at CFA introduces college-like experiences while providing the individualized attentionnecessary to help students prepare for the next phase of their education. A prime example of thisphilosophy is the Upper School’s flex schedule, which allows students to structure their time for a varietyof needs and interests such as tutoring sessions, clubs, collaborative study, and community service.Students are supported in being scholars, artists, and athletes; approximately 90 percent are involved inathletics and the arts.ARTSThe visual and performing arts play a central role in CFA’s academicprogram as students take advantage of the many opportunities theschool provides. The departments – and the impressive facilities –offer students ample opportunities to foster their passions anddevelop their talents. Each division produces a full musicalproduction each year, and the Upper School produces three additionalplays. Lower School students have music and art classes. Middle andUpper School students may enroll in a variety of visual arts electives.Among those electives are art fundamentals, ceramics and sculpture,filmmaking, technical theater and design, and musical theater dance.Students have the opportunity to join band or chorus, beginning inMiddle School with beginner and intermediate ensemble groups. Inthe Upper School, students can take part in pep band, pit band, concert band, or honors band. Manymembers compete for and earn seats in district and state honors ensembles. Students may also join vocalgroups beginning in sixth grade and progressing to the Upper School Vocal Ensemble, which is invited toperform at special events throughout the region and was recently selected to perform at Carnegie Hall.ATHLETICSCFA believes that interscholastic athletic experience is a natural extensionof the institution’s commitment to community, character, hard work,excellence, and opportunity. CFA fields 41 athletic teams with 12 sportsoffered plus sailing and surfing clubs. Lower School students havephysical education classes and beginning in seventh grade, students havethe option of enrolling in a sport. The school’s athletic philosophy isinclusive and over 90 percent of students join at least one athletic teamduring their time at CFA. Recent successes include NCISAA StateChampionship titles in boys’ soccer and lacrosse.7
