WELCOME TO THE NEW JERSEY COURTS WE WILL BE HAPPY TO HELP YOU IF WE CAN. HOWEVER, WE ARE ALLOWED TO HELP YOU ONLY IN CERTAIN WAYS, SINCE WE WANT TO BE FAIR TO EVERYONE IN A CASE. THIS IS A LIST OF SOME THINGS THE COURT STAFF CAN AND CANNOT DO FOR YOU. PLEASE READ IT CAREFULLY BEFORE ASKING THE COURT STAFF FOR HELP. WE CAN explain and answer questions about how the court works. WE CAN tell you what the requirements are to have your case considered by the court. WE CAN give you some information from your case file. WE CAN provide you with samples of court forms that are available. WE CAN provide you with guidance on how to fill out forms. WE CAN usually answer questions about court deadlines. ***** WE CANNOT give you legal advice. Only your lawyer can give you legal advice. WE CANNOT tell you whether or not you should bring your case to court. WE CANNOT give you an opinion about what will happen if you bring your case to court. WE CANNOT recommend a lawyer, but we can provide you with the telephone number of a local lawyer referral service. WE CANNOT talk to the judge for you about what will happen in your case. WE CANNOT let you talk to the judge outside of court. WE CANNOT change an order issued by a judge. WE LOOK FORWARD TO HELPING YOU IN ACCORDANCE TO THESE GUIDELINES. Mission Statement We are an independent branch of government constitutionally entrusted with the fair and just resolution of disputes in order to preserve the rule of law and to protect the rights and liberties guaranteed by the Constitution and laws of the United States and this State.

Dear Community Member, The Essex Vicinage Superior Court hears thousands of cases annually across its five locations within the county. Essex continually strives to improve the service provided to the surrounding community. As such, this booklet was created by the Essex Office of the Ombudsman with the purpose of providing social service and community resource information to the public. This compilation is an extension of information currently available at the courts main complex located 50 W. Market Street, Room 132 in Newark. For inquiries regarding this booklet or for assistance please call (973) 7769300 ext. 56886 or email EssexHelp.mailbox@njcourts.gov. Information and resources provided in this booklet include State, local government agencies and non-profit organizations. This resource has been compiled through contacting various state, non-profit agencies and through web-based research. This list is not inclusive of all the services available in the community but provides the most frequently sought after or requested agencies and services available in Essex County. Please note, inclusion in this booklet does not constitute an endorsement of any agency. Additionally, some agencies may require a referral or that you meet specific criteria to qualify for services. For a comprehensive list of social services in New Jersey call 2-1-1 from any phone or visit www.NJ211.org. The judges and staff of the Essex Vicinage recognize that without public trust and support, the court cannot fulfill its mission. We value your input and look forward to serving you. Sincerely, Essex Vicinage Office of the Ombudsman
