Hallock Spanish 1 Syllabus, Page 1 High School Spanish 1 Classroom Expectations and Procedures Señor Hallock Room 215 Brennan.Hallock@husd.org (480) 279-8500 Tutoring: *After School on Tuesdays and Before School on Thursdays by appointment only About Me: This is my fourth year in the Higley Unified School District and my third year as a Sossaman Spartan! I love the Sossaman community and I am excited to teach your child Spanish this year! I love the Spanish language and Hispanic culture and look forward to teaching your child about these fascinating topics! I am also very passionate about education and strive to help each child reach his or her potential and goals. I want your child to succeed and enjoy my class! Email is the quickest way to reach me, and I generally return an email or phone call within 48 hours. Please be sure to check Synergy, the grade book system, on a regular basis. You can access the system through the link on the left side of my teacher webpage. This Spanish 1 course is a high school course for high school credit. This course requires a high level of work and effort. In order to receive high school credit, your student must pass the comprehensive (multiple choice) final exam at end of the school year with a 70% or higher and earn a 70% or higher as their final (report card) grade in the course. Course objectives: 1) Expand vocabulary base. 2) Improve and expand writing, listening, speaking, pronunciation and reading comprehension skills. 3) Gain familiarity with Hispanic culture and appreciate differences and similarities in customs. Course Outline: 1st Semester: Greetings and polite phrases; days and months; what you want, need, prefer, and like to do; describing yourself, a friend, and others; speaking about going and being at a place. 2nd Semester: Going shopping and describing clothes; speaking and writing about the home, chores, extended family, rooms, and items you would find in the house; seasons and weather; sports, arts, and music; speaking and writing about health and food. Classroom Pledge: I will do everything I can to promote the respect, safety, and learning for myself and others. Rules: 1.) Promote respect, safety, and learning for yourself and others. 2.) Be working on your opening assignment when the bell rings. 3.) Bring your materials to class every day. 4.) Do your best in class each day.

Office referral *Lunch Bunch- If a student is displaying disruptive behavior, and does not heed the warning, they will be assigned a brief lunch detention with me during their lunch. This may also be assigned due to missing materials, assignments, or as otherwise determined by the teacher. Supplies/Materials: Interactive notebook (spiral bound notebook or composition notebook , one per semester) Pencils Red Pen (used to self-correct assignments) Glue Sticks Scissors Colored Pencils Highlighters (multiple colors) Dry-Erase Marker Index Cards Teacher Wish List: Expo Markers Tissues Hand Sanitizer Washable Markers (Crayola 8 pack or something similar) Bathroom procedure: My expectation is that students use the restroom during the passing period. Bathroom breaks are not allowed during the first 5 minutes of class, last 5 minutes of class, or during instructional time. In the event that the restroom is needed, students will have 3 passes per semester. Students will sign the sign-out log upon leaving the classroom and the sign-in log upon returning. Instruction: During direct-instruction (teacher to students) everyone will remain in their seats and will listen and participate appropriately. Restroom use is not permitted during this time. Food and Drink: No food or drink (with the exception of water) is allowed in the classroom. It will be thrown away upon entry in the classroom. No chewing gum is allowed in class. Electronic devices: There are to be NO phones or any electronic music or gaming device used during class, unless permission is given for academic use ONLY. These items will be confiscated according to school policy. iPads are to be used appropriately and may be taken away if this rule is not followed. Interactive Notebook: Students are required to bring a single subject notebook to class daily. This is where classwork, homework, notes, handouts, and vocabulary will be kept. On the left hand side will be student output and on the right side page will be teacher input. Care and upkeep of notebook is the responsibility of the student. Notebooks will be checked often and must be legible. The table of contents can be found on my teacher page under interactive notebooks.

Hallock Spanish 1 Syllabus, Page 3 Daily work/Practice: Students are expected to complete assignments in their interactive notebooks daily. Students are also expected to check their work. When learning a new language, mistakes will occur, and learning from those mistakes is another aspect of practice and language mastery. As assignments are corrected in the classroom, it is the student’s responsibility to correct the assignments. Homework/Preparation: Homework will be given daily and needs to be completed. Homework assignments can be found on edmodo. Students are expected to spend at least thirty minutes every evening studying, in order to complete their homework, study the vocabulary (verbalize the vocabulary/practice vocab daily), and review the grammar concepts for the chapter. Absences: It is the student’s responsibility to complete the work they missed due to an absence. Upon missing class, the expectation is that the student visit edmodo and make-up all work that is posted on edmodo for the day(s) missed. The lesson and homework (or an explanation of homework) will be posted daily. Please do not come to class asking me what we did before checking edmodo. If, after checking edmodo, additional clarification is needed, then please come see me. Everything can be accessed digitally from edmodo. 50% Floor: SMS incorporates a modified 50% floor policy. Any assignment submitted by a student that is accepted by a teacher will receive a minimum grade of a 50%. A teacher has the responsibility to not accept assignments from student that do not meet minimal standards of completion. On all assessments given by a teacher, there is no floor. Students will receive the mark/score they earned on the assessment. Any assignment that remains un-submitted at the end of the unit of study, or two weeks after the original due date (teacher discretion), will remain/be entered as a zero in the grade book. Re-do/Re-Take: SMS encourages students to re-do/re-take assessments on which they performed below their desired level of mastery. In order to be eligible to schedule a re-do/re-take time with a teacher a student must complete the following tasks: Ensure all assignments for the unit of study are turned in. Meet with the teacher to establish criteria to complete the re-do/re-take form and associated tasks. A student’s opportunity to re-do/re-take an assessment is always subject to teacher discretion. If a student chooses to retake an exam, the retake score (whether it is higher or lower than the original score) will be input in the grade book. After School Detention: SMS staff and administration believe in the value and importance of teaching students responsibility and accountability. As a result, students may be assigned After School Detention (ASD). ASD will be held three days a week. Students who are assigned ASD will serve on the next scheduled ASD day. Students will not serve on the day ASD is assigned in order to allow parents the opportunity to make arrangements to pick up their child. District transportation cannot be provided for ASD. Students will need to be picked up no later than 4:30PM. ASD may be assigned by a teacher for the following reasons: Tardy to Class Unprepared for Class (missing materials, uncharged iPad, etc ) Failure to submit an assignment The ASD program is not meant to address behavior issues in the classroom. However, a teacher may utilize lunch detention, after school detention, hold student/parent conference in order to address inappropriate behaviors in the classroom. These consequences are not related to the ASD program and will be accompanied by communication from the classroom teacher. Tutoring: It is my expectation that students are studying vocabulary, working on classwork, and completing homework daily. If additional assistance is needed, tutoring can set up after school on Tuesdays or before school on Thursdays. Students must sign-up in advanced by writing their name on the sign-up sheet by the end

Hallock Spanish 1 Syllabus, Page 4 of 6th hour on Tuesday (For Tuesday Afternoon Tutoring) or by the end of 6th hour on Wednesday (If the student is planning for Tutoring on Thursday Morning), along with the area they would like to review or the name of the quiz/test they would like to retake. Grading Policy: Grades will be determined by the following percentage scale: A 90 % B 80-89% C 70-79% D 60-69% F 59% and below Grades for this course are weighted and will be based on the following: Course Breakdown: Description: 60% Assessments Unit Exams, Quizzes, Projects, etc. 20% Daily Work and Practice Bell Work, Class Work, Homework 20% Final Exam Final Exam is 20% overall grade. Students who do not earn a C (70%) upon completion of the Fall Semester are not recommended for the class for Spring Semester. *****High School Credit: Per HUSD policy, in order to receive high school credit, the student must pass the multiple-choice final at the end of the school year with a 70% or higher and earn a 70% or higher as their final grade in the course. Plagiarism/cheating: If a student intentionally plagiarizes or cheats, parent contact will be made immediately, the child will receive a zero on the assignment or assessment, and will be referred to the office for the offense.
