EUNICE KENNEDY SHRIVER 1921 - 2009 ONE WOMAN’S VISION As founder and honorary chairperson of Special Olympics, Eunice Kennedy Shriver was a leader in the worldwide struggle to improve and enhance the lives of individuals with intellectual disabilities for more than five decades. Born in Massachusetts, the fifth of nine children of Joseph and Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy, Eunice dedicated her life to helping others. After college, she became a social worker for a women’s penitentiary, then worked with the House of the Good Shepherd and the juvenile court. When Eunice took over the direction of the Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr. Foundation, she helped achieve many significant advances for citizens with intellectual disabilities. The Foundation established the President’s Committee on Mental Retardation, the National Institute for Child Health and Human Development, university-affiliated facilities and mental retardation research centers at medical schools across the United States, the establishment of Special Olympics, the study of medical ethics at Harvard and Georgetown Universities, as well as the institution of “Community of Caring” centers and programs in 1200 schools to reduce intellectual disabilities among babies of teenagers. 4

Recognized throughout the world for her efforts on behalf of persons with intellectual disabilities, Eunice received many honors, awards and honorary degrees throughout her lifetime. President Reagan awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and she was honored for her work with Special Olympics in 2005, as one of the first recipients of a sidewalk medallion on The Extra Mile Point of Light Pathway in Washington D.C. Today, more than four million Special Olympic athletes are training year-round in all 50 states and 181 countries. They run races, toss softballs, lift weights, ski moguls, volley tennis balls and pirouette on skates. There are World Summer Games, which just occurred last year in Los Angeles, California, and World Winter Games, which will be staged in Austria in 2017. Schooling, medical treatment and athletic training have all changed for people with intellectual disabilities as a result of Shriver’s vision more important, so have minds, attitudes, and laws. It is through her relentless determination, passion, courage and the hard work of her and many others that her vision is being realized by millions of people the world over. She has inspired people around the globe to become believers and follow in her footsteps. “As we hope for the best in them, hope is reborn in us” – Eunice Kennedy Shriver 5

SPECIAL OLYMPICS MISSION The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in the sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community. 6

SPECIAL OLYMPICS FLORIDA – Miami-Dade County Special Olympics Florida - Miami-Dade County serves 6,500 athletes and offers training and competition in a total of 17 team and individual sports. These athletes are trained by 300 volunteer coaches, and are supported and encouraged by more than 1,200 event volunteers statewide. Special Olympics Florida – Miami-Dade County has over 120 local, registered training programs. Intellectual disability does not discriminate. Athletes who participate in Special Olympics come in all ages, ethnicities and social backgrounds. However, a significant number of athletes live in urban areas and come from lower socioeconomic groups. Special Olympics athletes are given opportunities to participate without regard to economic, demographic, religious, or social factors. Activities exist for those of all ability levels, from the highly functioning to the severely challenged. Anyone can participate in Special Olympics if they meet the eligibility criteria of having intellectual disabilities or a similar developmental disability. Neither athletes nor parents are charged a fee to participate in the program, Special Olympics provides free sports training and competition year-round. This is not to say these services are free, they are actually very expensive and only possible because of the support of the Miami-Dade County community. Through generous philanthropy, we can continue our mission to replace fear, stigma and oppression with possibility and opportunity for the Intellectually Disabled. Special Olympics Florida – Miami-Dade County 155 South Miami Avenue, Suite 200 Miami, Florida 33130 305.406.9467 www.specialolympicsmiamidade.org 7

On behalf of our 47,000 athletes and 31,000 volunteers, I want to thank you for choosing to be a Champion of Special Olympics Florida. Your support offers a limitless amount of opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities to enhance their skills, improve their health and build more confidence. Because of you, athletes are able to begin their journey in Special Olympics activities as early as age two and continue competing decades later, with our senior athletes nearing almost 90 years old. Your impact also reaches far beyond the playing field. The skills our athletes learn through Special Olympics prepare them to be better contributors in their local communities and society. They are coaches, mentors, hold positions on school councils, and are employed by local businesses. Through the vehicle of sport, Special Olympics is transforming attitudes to be more inclusive and accepting of individual differences, encouraging everyone that when in doubt - “Choose to Include.” Thank you for Choosing to Include and your support for Special Olympics Florida! Sherry Wheelock President & CEO 8

Special Olympics Florida – Miami-Dade County is honored to celebrate our most deserving athletes, coaches and volunteers at our 2018 Athlete Awards. We applaud their achievements that have inspired and impacted the lives of over 6,500 athletes in Miami-Dade County. Our work would not be possible without the commitment of our community partners who support our mission to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. By using sport as a vehicle, we continue moving forward to create an inclusive, accepting world where our athletes have the opportunity to display their capabilities. We invite all of you to attend one of our local county competitions to witness how your support transforms lives through the power of sport every day. Join the Inclusion Revolution! Carole MacArthur encouraged all of her students to participate to their greatest ability, to develop their love of sport and develop their physical talents. She would not allow any hurdle to become an obstacle to an Athlete’s participation even if that meant waking up at 4:30 am to pick up Athletes for a competition. Most importantly, Carole developed positive attitudes, sportsmanship and self-esteem in her athletes. Carole passed away in 2004 after battling cancer. Her legacy continues to live on through the hundreds of Athletes and Coaches who she inspired. 16
