The tapes covered incoming calls and on-scene dispatch communications from the 1980’s and 90’s. Recently one of these tapes was sent to New York to a audio restoration company for evaluation. Once the state of the tapes are determined, the MFHS will raise funds to digitalize all of the reel-to-reel tapes. Work is also proceeding on the dictabelt tapes. Our 1960’s era dictabelt machine is currently being repaired. This story from a 1906 Milwaukee Journal article describes the awarding of a Carnegie medal for heroism. The Register, 1615 W. Thursday, January 10, 2019 at 7pm , doors open at 630 PM. Milwaukee Fire Museum Carl Baehr, author of the newly published “A History of the Irish in Milwaukee”, will do a short presentation on the Irish in Milwaukee including information on the Newhall House and 3rd Ward fires. Afterward Carl will be on hand to sell and sign copies of his new book. Irish-Milwaukee history begins with the first Irish immigrants who arrived during Milwaukee’s founding in the mid-1830s. Irish laborers helped shape the city by cutting down bluffs, filling in marshes, digging a canal, and creating streets. They were joined in the late 1840s by more Irishmen who were fleeing the Great Famine and starvation in Ireland. It’s a history populated with heroic figures like Patrick O’Kelly, the city’s first Catholic priest and the founder of Milwaukee’s first Catholic church; John O’Rourke, the first editor of the Milwaukee Sentinel; and Timothy O’Brien, who emerged as a hero during the cholera epidemics—as well as other colorful characters like the scoundrel Robert B. Lynch, kindhearted Hannah Kenneally, the “White Irishman” John White, re ghting hero Patsy McLaughlin, and militia leader John McManman. And it’s a tale of overcoming some of Milwaukee’s biggest tragedies: the sinking of the Lady Elgin, which cost the lives of 300 people, most of them from the Irish Third Ward; the Newhall House hotel re, which took more Irish lives; and finally, the Third Ward Fire, which destroyed hundreds of buildings and scattered the Irish to other parts of the city. This historical tour captures it all—from the difficulties in adapting to American ways, as seen through events like the Leahey riot and the lynching of Marshall Clark, to the successes, such as the founding of the city of Cudahy by a poor Irish immigrant, the lm stardom of Tory Hill’s Pat O’Brien and Merrill Park’s Spencer Tracy, and the many people who have Milwaukee streets and parks named for them. From the Emerald Isle to the Cream City describes how the Irish influenced the political, educational, religious, and sports landscape of Milwaukee and their impact on other ethnic groups, overcoming early poverty and bigotry to help make Milwaukee the city that it is today. Carl Baehr, a native Milwaukeean, is the author of Milwaukee Streets: The Stories Behind Their Names, which was awarded the 1994 Gambrinus Prize. He has also written many local history articles, including the City Streets column for Urban Milwaukee. The Register, 1615 W. THE THEREGISTER REGISTER Milwaukee MilwaukeeFire FireHistorical HistoricalSociety Societyand andFire FireMuseum Museum- December 2018 11 11 PAGEPAGE Fireboat High Pressure Hydrant System Milwaukee's fireboat high pressure hydrant system was designed to supplement the normal hydrant system of the city in the case of large fires in the business district. The red and yellow fire hydrants through the city are supplied by the Milwaukee Water Works with water from Lake Michigan. The fireboat system was supplied by fireboats pumping water from Milwaukee's rivers directly into a pipeline that supplied land-base pumping engines from green hydrants. and Fire Museum MUSEUM OPEN HOUSE DATES The Milwaukee Fire Museum will be closed for the Winter on Sundays in January, February and March, 2019. The Fire Museum is again open on the first Sunday of each Month, except holidays. The next three Open House dates are: April 7, May 5 and June 2, 2016 12:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M To scheduled a private or group tour of the Fire Museum other than scheduled Sunday Open House dates, call 414-286-5272. The system began in 1892 under the direction of Fire Chief James Foley. By 1929, there were 29 fireboat mains and 261 hydrants installed. Each main had its own fireboat connection. Connections were located on both sides of the Milwaukee River. Due to the Great Depression, funding to expand the system was not possible and it gradually fell out of use. Fireboats would pull in and connect to the six-way connection and pump river water into the system. While the fireboat was en route the connection, hose companies would lay 3-1/2" hose from the boat hydrant to land engines at the fire. This hydrant was located at E. Michigan and N. Milwaukee.
