1968 Class Notes Doug Cross Doug Cross, Class of 1968, attended the University of Alabama where he obtained a B.S. in Secondary Education (1972) and an M.A. in Speech-Language Pathology (1974). He then received a Ph.D. in Speech and Hearing Science from the University of Tennessee (1978) with a primary focus on the nature and treatment of fluency disorders. Doug’s first professional position was a research and clinical associate in the intensive stuttering program at the University of New South Wales in Sydney Australia. From there he was an assistant professor at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro (19781980) and at the University of Iowa (1980-1984). Doug then became a professor of Speech Science and Pathology at Ithaca College in upstate NY (1984-2015) where he continued his research and clinical work in fluency and voice disorders. Doug also conducted research on the electrophysiology of dolphin communication at the Epcot Center in Orlando, FL on summer research grants from 1985-89. He retired from academics in 2015 and as of 2018 still resides in Ithaca – but is planning on relocating south with his wife, Diane VERY, VERY soon. Doug married Diane Smith in 1996. Diane recently retired as the budget and finance manager for the Cornell Law School. Doug has two stepchildren, Josh (33) and Erica (30) who live in Wilmington, NC and Ithaca, NY respectively. His daughter Allison (18) is currently majoring in Marine Biology at the University of Alabama where she continues the tradition of being a staunch Crimson Tide fan. Doug’s main interests over the years include scuba diving, arena polo, furniture making, piloting general aviation aircraft, and golfing. Retirement plans include moving south and playing as much golf as possible. David Grissett After graduating from Good Counsel in 1968, I headed west ( northwest actually ) and spent the subsequent years in the Amish Country of Northwest Pennsylvania before graduating from Westminster College. It was in New Wilmington, PA that I first encountered a horse & buggy as a popular means of transportation. I was so enthralled by this experience and their way life that I spent the next thirty plus years ( raising a family ) living in this bucolic environment. My professional career seemed to reset every eight years as changes in my life caused me to seek new opportunities until 1988 when I accepted a position with one of the top luggage manufacturers in the world. Since then, I have traveled a lot in the United States and Europe working with a variety of customers ( mainly the different branches of the military, department stores, luggage specialty stores and AAA’s ) assisting them in exploiting their niches in the Travel Goods Industry. One of my “ claims to fame “ is that I have traveled to every city ( USA ) that is listed on the weather page of the USA Today. Four years ago, I started a sales rep company selling the luggage and travel accessories for several of the companies that I had worked with for the past twenty-four years. My desire is work for several more years contingent upon health and life circumstances. I have two children – Ryan & Jodi who live in North Carolina and three grandchildren. I have lived with Alice ( my high school sweet heart ) for the past fifteen years. We enjoy traveling and playing golf. I am looking forward to seeing old friends at our 50th Reunion this coming October.

1968 Class Notes Paul Schilling After my OLGC graduation, I was blessed to lead a very lucky life. While a freshman at Georgetown University School of Foreign Service, I had the good fortune to be in the right place in line at The Lodge (Wisconsin Avenue, N.W.) where I met Mary Ann Kirley (a graduate of Our Lady of Lourdes and the Academy of the Holy Cross and later on, the University of Maryland and George Washington University graduate school). I knew immediately that she was the love of my life and after college graduation, we married. Except for my best man Bob Chambers – a “Johnny Mop” from St. Mary’s, Rockville - my groomsmen were all OLGC: Gary Costenbader and Steve Burns, both our classmates, and my ring bearer and then-future Falcon brother-in-law, Patrick Kirley (who went on to score the first goal in OLGC lacrosse history). Mary Ann and I have been blessed with two lovely daughters, Kate and Marie, both of whom are OLGC graduates (along with my niece Leigh-Anne Worthington). Also while a freshman at Georgetown, I was convinced by Steve Dean (OLGC ’67) to serve as manager for the GU freshmen basketball team, working behind him as varsity manager as I had at OLGC. This brought me to the attention of Joe Kuczo, the Georgetown University Athletic Trainer, and I accepted his offer to become a GU student athletic trainer. The full scholarship that came with the offer was a relief to my family’s budget and, since Kuczo was also the Redskins head trainer, gave me the opportunity to work as a Redskins trainer during the season and at their Carlisle, PA summer camp. After college, I entered the Dickinson School of Law in Carlisle, PA and after DSL graduation, served for several years as Deputy Attorney General in the Pennsylvania Department of Justice in Harrisburg. Leaving Pennsylvania, I accepted a position with the Central Intelligence Agency’s Office of General Counsel where I served for some thirty years. For the details of that service, I’d refer you to http://www.iwp.edu/faculty/detail/paulschilling. After retirement, I taught history and constitutional law at St. Anselm's Abbey High School in Washington, D.C. and then worked for several years providing instructional and other services to U.S. government personnel under a corporate contract with the Director of National Intelligence. I currently serve as an adjunct professor at the Institute of World Politics, a graduate school of national security and international affairs in Washington, D.C. I've taught CCD at Holy Redeemer, Kensington, and previously at St. Patrick's, Carlisle, PA. I currently serve on the Holy Redeemer Parish Finance Council and have served on its School Board as well. I've served for several years as a guide (docent) at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. I've been a member for several years of “Marine Parents”, a group that serves meals to the families of wounded Marines (and other service members) receiving treatment at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, MD and am a USO volunteer there as well. I serve as a guide for “Honor Flights,” a program which flies U.S. military veterans to Washington, D.C. for a day-long tour of our national monuments and historic sites. I’m also a member of the Father Capodanno Guild, a group which seeks to promote the canonization of Father Vincent Capodanno (a U.S. Navy Chaplain who was killed in action during the Vietnam War while anointing and aiding U.S. Marines in combat with the North Vietnamese army and who, for his service, was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor). I’m looking forward to sharing “old times” with my classmates and teachers. The loss of my “Gold Book” sometime after graduation has been my sole misfortune in life.
