Schedule Tuesday, February 17 2–5 pm Registration Wednesday, February 18 7 am–5 pm Registration 8–9:15 am Keynote Presentation The Worth of a Life—Dave Dravecky’s Story Dave Dravecky Drawing from his personal experience with cancer, Dave Dravecky, former Major League pitcher with the San Francisco Giants, will share what he has learned about the meaning of success and how to find encouragement through adversity. He’ll explain how the power of your team can be an important asset in an age of austerity and fewer resources and show how, by examining relationships with your coworkers and teams, you can discover your true worth. In 1988, Dravecky was at the top of his game when he was diagnosed with a soft-tissue cancer in the deltoid muscle of his pitching arm. After surgery, Dave was told that outside of a miracle, he would never pitch again. Unwilling to give up his dream, he fought back, and 9 months later, he once again stepped onto the mound to pitch a winning game for the Giants. Five days later, however, his comeback ended: on a “pitch that could be heard around the world,” his arm broke. The next years were a whirlwind of surgery, radiation, pain, depression, and eventually amputation. After the 1989 season and his retirement from baseball, Dravecky was presented with the Hutch Award, which annually recognizes a Major League player who best exemplifies the fighting spirit and competitive desire of the legendary leader Fred Hutchinson, who lost his own battle with cancer at age 45 while managing the Cincinnati Reds. In 1991, Dave and his wife, Jan, established Endurance, a nonprofit, Christian-based ministry offering support to people facing serious illness, loss, or depression. 9:15–10:15 am Breakout Sessions MANAGEMENT, SALES, AND MARKETING Telling a Building’s Story: The Lost Art of Drafting (A1) Patrick McGuire, PE SE Most of the prints we encounter in the post-frame industry are produced by people who do not know what they are doing! The output of some of the automated pricing programs is among the worst. A person can know post-frame construction from the pads to the ridge cap, know all there is to know about computer-aided design, be a whiz at databases and produce 3-D color drawings without moving a mouse, or be able to produce reams of structural calculations and still not produce a helpful set of prints. Why? The person has never seriously thought about the reason for producing a set of prints. This presentation invites the audience to look at a 4 set of prints as a story—the story of a building—and to use this analogy to think more clearly when producing or purchasing prints for a building. CREW TRAINING Post-Frame Construction Job-Site Safety (A2) Darrell Kolstad, Katy Tiller, Mark Werbeckes The issue of job-site safety is often overlooked and may even be shunned by some companies. One way companies can improve the quality of their buildings is by keeping their experienced, trained employees safe and healthy. Long-term, knowledgeable workers are usually employees who are concerned about the safety of themselves and their coworkers. This session highlights both the need for an effective safety program and its benefits. Learn about the importance of working in a safe culture, improving job-site conditions, and emphasizing that the safety of a job site starts with the employees on the site. See how managers can support their employees in creating a cooperative and safe environment for anyone coming to the job site. TECHNICAL AND PRODUCT KNOWLEDGE Not All Metal (Steel) Is Created Equal (A3) Don Switzer Not all metal (steel) is created equal. On the day of installation, two products may look the same, but their performances over time may vary widely. It’s important to understand the differences in types of steel (galvanized vs. Galvalume), grades (80 vs. 50 vs. CS Type B), metallic coating (AZ50 vs. AZ35 or G90 vs. G60), and the importance of specifying material thickness as a decimal versus a gauge (29-gauge range of 0.0142 to 0.017). It’s also important to know the types of paint (polyester, SMP, PVDF, or kynar) and the dry film thickness. Other relevant questions: Why should I worry about the pretreatment? Is cheaper always better? In the end, it’s important to know not only who supplied your painted metal but where it came from and who is standing behind the product. Ask one simple question: Who made my steel? Anyone who attends this presentation will receive a ticket for a tour of the Steel Dynamics facility in Jeffersonville, IN. Steel Dynamics will provide bus transportation to the facility, which is 20 minutes from the Louisville Convention Center.

10:15–10:45 am Break 10:45–11:45 am Breakout Sessions MANAGEMENT, SALES, AND MARKETING For Small-Business Owners: Essentials of Accounting and Financial Statements (A4) Craig Covell Financial statements help the small-business owner evaluate his or her company’s fiscal health. Most important are the profit and loss statement, the balance sheet, and the cash flow statement, which can be created monthly, quarterly, or annually. Maintaining and understanding these records help business owners meet their legal and tax responsibilities, make informed decisions and projections for the company’s future, and have the necessary data to share with banks and other stakeholders when seeking additional funding. This presentation focuses on creating and using these essential business tools. CREW TRAINING The Past, Present, and Future of NFBA’s Post-Frame Building Design Manual (A5) Dave Bohnhoff, PhD PE The forthcoming second edition of NFBA’s Post-Frame Building Design Manual contains modifications and updates that will influence post-frame design and construction in important ways. We’ll review the development of the first edition (published in 2000) and discuss the changes made in the new edition and ideas for future additions and modifications. TECHNICAL AND PRODUCT KNOWLEDGE Why Trees Can Be Stronger than Wood (A6) Martin Whitehead and Roald Gundersen Building with trees that are too small to mill (small-diameter timber) can be more economical than building with steel or dimensional lumber. Historic images and modern examples of round timber and mass timber (cross-lam) construction demonstrate the past and newly emerging durability of building with wood. This presentation draws on material science to demonstrate the competitiveness of round timber in load capacity, bending strength, fire rating, and life-cycle performance and shares information on the declining health of forests and lessons learned from 20 years of managing a 20-acre Forest Service Council sustainable forest and learning lab. Incorporating small-diameter timber (a material that is currently considered sustainably managed forest waste) into commercial and residential construction will have a restorative impact on communities and the building shed. Noon–5pm Trade Show Open Get your pitching speed clocked at the pitching station, sponsored by H & H Metal Products. Concessions are available on the trade-show floor. 12:30–1 pm Membership Demo Not an NFBA member? Attend this demo to learn how NFBA membership gives member organizations a distinct advantage as they work hard to expand their businesses. NFBA shapes the future of the post-frame industry and provides members with a measurable return on investment through networking, trade-show discounts and perks, technical support, education, research, codes and standards development, and accreditation. If you’re not a member and you’re in the post-frame industry, this is a must-attend presentation! 1–5 pm Workshop Five Ways to Grow Your Business Profitably, Part 1 (WS1) K. P. Persaud Historically, businesses grew simply because they were good at what they did. In today’s shrinking market, businesses must be strategically aggressive to gain an edge over the ubiquitous competition. And it’s more important than ever to realize your business’s potential growth—an enhanced revenue line does not necessarily mean an improved cash flow. The biggest challenge faced by many small businesses is weak sales and marketing competencies. This intensive workshop helps you determine and refine your unique selling proposition and target markets. You’ll also learn techniques for question-based selling, relationship selling, transactional sales, phone sales, and online sales. All participants receive a workbook containing several group collaboration exercises used in the workshop, including pinpointing your target goals, identifying drivers for your goals, choosing your strategies, and developing a 90-day and a 1-year plan. Persaud is an expert executive business coach with a background in engineering, plant management, and corporate management. He works for DeKasp Enterprises—part of ActionCOACH, a well-known international business coaching firm with more than 1,000 offices in 50 countries. Take advantage of this rare opportunity to learn practical, easily applicable strategies for growth and business development from a highly skilled business coach. Part 1 of a two-part workshop. Part 2 is offered on Thursday, 7:30– 11:30 am. An additional fee is required; see Box F on the registration form. “K.P. has been coaching me directly and working with my business now for about 3 years. Our growth in financials, business acumen, and professionalism has been astounding. His story is a true inspiration. He has an amazing wealth of knowledge and has truly been a mentor to me and my staff. The decision to engage in business coaching and to work on your business versus in it is a decision to invest in your business as well as yourself. And like any good investment, the returns make it very worthwhile.” —Matt Greiner, president of Greiner Buildings 5

A great deal of sales training deals with the qualifying process and ways to overcome those initial no’s during a presentation. Many businesses see advertising only as a way to create brand awareness and generate leads, but strategic marketing can also create perceptions and associations that will help your salespeople overcome objections, close more sales, and shorten the buying cycle.

CREW TRAINING How to Respond to a Job-Site Visit by OSHA (B2) Gary Auman More employers in the construction industry are finding themselves being inspected by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), so it behooves every contractor to know how to prepare for an OSHA visit. Many employers are unaware of their rights and unsure how to respond to an OSHA compliance inspection. This lack of knowledge can expose the builder to substantial fines, penalties, and abatement costs. This session will provide builders with a step-bystep process for handling an OSHA compliance inspection. TECHNICAL AND PRODUCT KNOWLEDGE Controlling Condensation in Post-Frame Construction (B3) Michael Primavera This informative presentation addresses the issue of condensation in post-frame construction and metal roofing applications. Learn about the basics of condensation and ways to design projects and install products that help solve the condensation issues associated with metal roofing products. 9:45–10:15 am Break 10:15–11:15 am Breakout Sessions MANAGEMENT, SALES, AND MARKETING Post-Frame Construction and Green Building (B4) Daniel Hindman, PhD Green building, which considers the economic, environmental, and societal impacts of building projects, is one of the most exciting areas in construction today. Post-frame buildings are a very material-efficient type of building construction, but presenting post-frame buildings as green buildings requires careful attention to details and accurate statements of construction impacts. The presenter will explain green-building principles related to site, materials, energy, water, and indoor environmental quality; address how to accurately state claims for green buildings; explain the methods of green-building certification systems; discuss the green-building attributes of post-frame buildings; and present some tools to explain these attributes. CREW TRAINING Risk Management and Permanent Bracing of Long-Span Trusses (B5) Kirk Grundahl, PE Construction industry professionals face several challenges when they use permanent bracing of long-span trusses. This presentation reviews the purpose of permanent bracing and then looks at some collaborative projects that will help clarify the issues. Kirk Grundahl outlines the extra procedures necessary for installing trusses 60 feet or greater in length and provides tips for the safe and efficient handling and installing of long-span trusses. He also covers the Building Component Safety Information (BCSI)-B3 Summary Sheet on permanent restraint/bracing of chords and web members. This document’s details and guidelines communicate important concepts in permanent bracing and serve as a valuable risk-management tool. TECHNICAL AND PRODUCT KNOWLEDGE Advantages of Polymer Products in Today’s Agricultural Facility (B6) Gregory Sheehy and Scott Charles Drawing on valuable work by Extrutech Plastics Inc., the presenters answer several questions about polymer products: Why use plastic in a project? What products are available? How are they installed? What are the benefits to builders and owners? Where are these products used and why? A slideshow of Extrutech’s projects from 1992 (when production began) to the present illustrates the presentation. 11:30 am–1 pm NFBA Awards Luncheon Everyone is invited to this session recognizing recipients of the NFBA Building of the Year Awards, the Crew Foreman of the Year Award, the Rural Builder Hall of Fame Award, and the Bernon G. Perkins Post-Frame Industry Award. Friday, February 20 7:30 am–12:30 pm Registration 8–9 am Breakout Sessions MANAGEMENT, SALES, AND MARKETING New Applications of the General-Duty Clause (C1) Gary Auman This session covers all aspects of the general-duty clause as used by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Violations under that clause include exposure of employees to a recognized hazard that is causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm, exposure to heat stress and cold-weather injuries, and exposure to injury when an employee is texting while driving. Gary Auman will discuss the requirements OSHA must meet in order to establish a violation under the general-duty clause (including the need to demonstrate a feasible method to eliminate the hazard), the requirements for compliance on the part of employers, and ways for builders to avoid being cited for additional violations under the general-duty clause. CREW TRAINING Proper Use and Handling of Wood Products (C2) Daniel Hindman, PhD The structural systems of most post-frame buildings are composed of wood elements. Although wood is a very useful construction material, many problems in construction result from mishandling wood or lacking knowledge of its properties. This presentation will describe wood’s attributes, discuss various wood products (including pressure-preservative lumber) and wood-moisture behavior, and offer general advice for handling wood materials. TECHNICAL AND PRODUCT KNOWLEDGE Condensation Issues and Their Solutions (C3) Joe Zulovich, PhD PE Condensation in post-frame construction can and does occur. However, no single solution will solve all condensation problems. This presentation provides a knowledge base in building science for understanding why and how condensation occurs in post-frame buildings. We will look at several case examples that illustrate common condensation problems and then use the foundational knowledge to consider possible solutions and explore the reasons that a given solution for a condensation problem may not always work in all climate zones of the United States. 8:30 am–12:30 pm Trade Show Open 8
