How to use cisco’s WebEx to teach online Yoon Tiem Leong School of Physics Universiti Sains Malaysia 17 March 2020

Hardware requirements You will need a PC or your laptop You will need an earphone. You will need a web camera (the one on your laptop will be suffice if you only want to do a ‘passive’ lecture by sitting in from of the screen) If you want to show on the screen your handwriting, you will a penmouse (used in conjunction with Windows 10 Ink Workspace). No additional web camera) is required. If you need to display handwriting on papers / writing on white board, you will need an additional web camera.

First step For a lecturer to conduct his/her course online using WebEx, the first step is to go to https://www.webex.com/ Click on ‘Sign in’ Choose ‘WebEx Meetings’

Sign in with your *.usm.my ID and campus online password

For the first time logging in WebEx using *.usm.my userid, your browser will lead you to the campus online login page. Log in as usual.

WebEx installation Upon your first log-in, you may be prompted to download and install the WebEx application software. Follow the prompt and instruction to install it.

You may also be prompted with the Launch Application when launching the WebEx application for the first time. Click ‘open link’ when prompted.

Once you are logged in to the WebEx page, you will see your new WebEx ‘personal room’ To begin a meeting session, click ‘Start a Meeting’ Note that the url of the ‘webex personal room ’ is https://usm-cmr.webex.com/meet/tlyoon

Once your WebEx application is installed, you can also launch your WebEx session from your laptop (press the ‘Windows key’ on keyboard type ‘webex’ to lauch it)

Assuming you have already installed the WebEx application, it will be launched, and you will land on the following page. Just click on ‘Start Meeting’

Choose the content to share in the ‘Select content to share’ icon Once the ‘meeting’ is started, click on the third icon on the bottom to ‘Share Content’. If you choose ‘Screen1’, this will expose everything on your laptop screen to the participants who join the meeting. There are other applications that you want to share other than ‘Screen 1’, e.g., power points, web browser, etc. Specifically, instead of sharing everything on your screen, you may just want to share the power point with the participants in the meeting session.

Choose the content to share in the ‘Select content to share’ icon

Note also from the ‘more’ ( ) drop-down tab, the ‘Meeting info ’ will tell you the ‘Access code:’ 573 554 681’ and other information of your meeting room

Now what? For a lecturer to conduct his/her course online using WebEx, 1. The student will have to also register a WebEx account themselves. 2. There are at least three ways for the students to join your WebEx meeting session after they have installed the WebEx application and registered WebEx account. 3. They will have to key-in either one of the following information when launching their WebEx application https://usm-cmr.webex.com/meet/tlyoon https://usm-cmr.webex.com/join/tlyoon or your WebEx's 9-figures access code. In this demo, the access code is 573 554 681 If you have already started your meeting session and is waiting in front of your screen with the video camera on, students will see you on their screen.

How to know who are watching? Clicking the ‘Participants’ icon, you can see who is in the current WebEx session.
