CONDITIONS OF CONTEST i. All rules of the NBCA and TBL will be strictly enforced. ii. Bandspersons must appear in band uniform. iii. The official entry form must state whether or not competitors require the official accompanist. If this is not done it will be assumed that the competitors will supply their own accompanist. iv. Competitors will be permitted to use their own accompanist in any class provided that the chosen accompanist is available when the competitor is due to perform. Otherwise, the competitor must use an official accompanist. v. All Own Choice music must be handed to the appropriate official at least 30 minutes prior to the commencement of the class. All bars must be numbered. vi. Competitors must report to the Contest Co-ordinator at least 20 minutes before commencement of their class. vii. For all Own Choice music classes, the following time limits will be adhered to: All solos (except Champion of Champions) . 5 minutes Duets . 6 minutes Champion of Champions . 8 minutes viii. Music for Champion of Champions will be Own Choice. Competitors may use a Test Solo if they wish. ix. If a competitor is entering in more than one class they must play a different piece of music in each class. x. Only the starting times for the sessions will be provided. Competitors must ensure that they are available to perform when, and as, required. PLEASE NOTE: Notification of scratchings assists with the smooth running of the contest. A novice is a person who has not gained a first place at any NBCA, TBL or affiliated solo contest. Please ensure that any trophies held by you or your band members are returned in good condition on or before the day of the contest. A competitor may only enter in one novice section.

Martin Winter United Kingdom Martin is a graduate of the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, where he studied trumpet with Howard Snell and John Dickinson. He has been a freelance trumpeter with most of the major British orchestras and was Associate Principal Trumpet of the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra for eight years from 1992. From the 2000/01 season, he has been the Co-Principal Trumpet with the Bergen Filharmoniske Orkester, Norway. In addition to professional work, he has played principal cornet with outstanding brass bands, notably the Desford Colliery Dowty Band, Britannia Building Society Band, Williams Fairey Band, Yorkshire Building Society Band and the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain. After leaving the RNCM as a student, he became a Junior Fellow in teaching and taught trumpet and cornet for eight years. He has also been a guest lecturer for the Royal College of Music, London, the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, Glasgow and the Grieg Academy, Bergen, as well as external examiner at the Birmingham Conservatoire. Other adjudicating duties have included National and European Brass and Wind Band Championships. Martin plays lead trumpet with Bergen Big Band, one of the best big bands in Scandinavia. His debut album “Winter’s Tale” won multiple awards, one of which received over 12,000 votes. He is a Yamaha artist, and as a soloist, he has given eighteen premieres and performed in USA, Asia and Europe.

Simon Cawthorn Tasmania Simon graduated from the Tasmanian Conservatorium of music in 2002. He has played in various wind and brass bands in Tasmania and Australia including The National Australia Brass in 2013 and 2014, principal trumpet of the Hobart Wind Symphony, augmented with the Melbourne Opera company and has been privileged to travel with bands such as Derwent Valley Concert band to Japan, China, Canada and America. He has also appeared as a soloist in bands and has won various competitions on trumpet, cornet and flugel horn. In 2011 he won the Open National flugel horn solo at the National Band Championships. Simon conducted the Hobart Senior and Junior Brass Bands from 2005 to 2011 where they were very successful in competition and progressed from ‘D’ Grade to ‘A’ Grade in just six years due to the amazing commitment of the band. In 2013 Simon was one of three conductors in Australia and New Zealand to be awarded an Adrienne, Lady Stewart Conducting Bursary to study under world acclaimed Professor David King. From 2013 Simon has conducted Glenorchy City Concert Brass ‘A’ Band. In 2014 he led Glenorchy to a successful Nationals campaign coming a close second in the Own Choice and March and fifth overall in the ‘A’ Grade section. Simon is passionate about teaching others in music and is a full time specialist music teacher of brass and percussion and conducts bands in seven government schools in Hobart.

Derek Grice Tasmania Derek is a woodwind and percussion specialist and graduate from the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music. He has on occasion been a casual player with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra and has performed in the orchestras of countless Tasmanian musical and theatre productions. Derek has served five years as a member of the Tasmanian Bands League’s Musical Advisory Board with responsibility for the selection of grade and age appropriate set solo pieces, contests works for band, the grading of bands, and the appointment of contest adjudicators. Derek’s professional repertoire extends to being a qualified AMEB examiner and the adjudicator of ensembles and wind soloists at the Clarence Eisteddfod. In 2012 Derek took out the National Band Championships Woodwind Champion of Champions soloist section and has played Principal clarinet in many National Championships including winning the Open ‘A’ Grade Concert Band section on three occasions with Hobart Wind Symphony. He is in much demand as a woodwind and percussion tutor in Hobart schools. He currently teaches at the Hutchins School, St. Virgil’s College, Collegiate and Sacred Heart College. He also has an active home studio of private students. Derek hones his percussion skills while playing with Glenorchy Concert Brass which is currently the only ‘A’ Grade brass band in Tasmania.
