The mission of the College Advisors Advisory Council (CAAC) is to coordinate professional development opportunities for the District’s College Advisors. The CAAC will seek to identify issues or concerns relative to providing quality advising to students. The CAAC serves as liaison for the advisors on their campuses to the District Office for district advising projects. Nicole Hobbs of OHC goes over the syllabus. Academic Advising Description/Definition Academic advising is an educational process that, by intention and design, facilitates students’ understanding of the meaning and purpose of higher education and fosters their intellectual and personal development toward academic success and lifelong learning (NACADA, 2004). Richard J. Daley College promotes lifelong learning by providing the highest quality of services to our students. Academic advising provides students with the opportunity to build a relationship with their advisor for the purpose of gaining assistance in the planning of their educational career, in learning skills needed for academic success, and in learning how to access the variety of resources and services available to them throughout the City Colleges of Chicago. Academic advising is a collaborative educational process fostering the success of the student. This advisor/advisee partnership requires participation and involvement of both the advisor and the student as it is built over the students’ entire educational experience at our college. Both student and advisor have responsibilities to ensure the partnership is successful. Expected Student Learning Outcomes for the Academic Advising Experience Through the academic advising experience at Richard J. Daley College/AVI students will: Demonstrate the ability to make effective decisions concerning their educational and career goals. Develop an educational plan and select courses each semester to progress towards fulfilling that educational plan. Demonstrate an understanding of the value of the general/core educational requirements. Accurately read and use the college catalog and program evaluation. Utilize the resources and services on campus. Graduate in a timely manner based on their educational plan. In order for you and your advisor to accurately measure and document that you have achieved the learning outcomes for academic advising, the advisor and advisee will develop an ongoing por7olio of your advising work. This por7olio will include your program evalua;on, semester schedules, referrals for resources and/or services, and any documents that you and your advisor will develop together to demonstrate your achievement of these outcomes. A D V I S I N G S Y L L A B U Advisor Responsibilities – What You Can Expect S You can expect me as your advisor to: Understand and effectively communicate the purposes of the COMPASS test, college placement requirements, graduation requirements, and college policies and procedures. Encourage and guide students as they define and develop realistic goals. Encourage and support students as they gain the skills to develop clear and attainable educational plans. Provide students with information utilizing the available resources and services on campus and online: http:// my.ccc.edu. Monitor and accurately document students’ progress towards meetings their goals. Be accessible for meeting with advisees by way of telephone, e-mail, or office hours. Assist students in gaining decisions making skills and skills in assuming responsibility for their educational plans and achievements. Maintain confidentiality. Assist students in working closely with their professors. Advisee Responsibilities – What You Are Expected To Do As an advisee, you have clear responsibilities in the advising partnership to be successful: Make regular contacts with advisor during each semester. Come prepared to each appointment with your advising folder with questions and/or materials for discussion. Be an active learner by participating fully in the advising experience. Ask questions if you do not understand an issue or have a specific concern. Clarify personal values and goals and provide advisor with accurate information regarding your interests and abilities. Become knowledgeable about college programs, policies, and procedures. Accept responsibility for your decision. Richard J. HAROLD WASHINGTON COLLEGE ACADEMIC ADVISING SYLLABUS HAROLD WASHINGTON COLLEGE (HWC) In keeping with the institution’s mission and recognizing that advising is an integral part of the educational process, Harold Washington College Advising Office empowers students to take charge of their educational and career goals through a system of shared responsibility between student and advisor. Explain institutional academic policies and procedures, degree requirements and graduation requirements. Educate students about college resources. Be available to answer students’ questions through scheduled appointments, phone calls, and/or email. Support and encourage students as they strive to achieve their academic and career goals. Actively listen to student’s concerns, respect their decisions, and refer them to appropriate support services within the college when needed. Discuss with students their academic performance and the implications of poor academic performance. Maintain confidentiality according to established standards. Page 12

Student Responsibilities/ Advisors expect students to: Schedule and attend advising appointments well before registration prepared with questions and/ or concerns. Review your academic plan each semester. Keep your advisor informed about changes in your academic plan and course selection. Have a tentative list of courses prepared when you come to register for courses. Be knowledgeable about policies and procedures, degree requirements and graduation requirements found in the Student Policy Manual. Know your advisor’s name and contact information for future reference. Inform your advisor or instructor(s) immediately whenever a serious problem (medical, financial, personal) disrupts your ability to attend classes or interferes with your ability to focus on your education and perform your best work. To be aware of academic deadlines and don’t miss deadlines. Know when to register and when to withdraw from courses. Follow through with all actions/activities related to your academic goals as determined in collaboration between you and your advisor. Understand academic performance standards, academic probation, academic exclude, and GPA requirements. Seek resources in the college as needed. Our purpose is to guide students to become self-directed learners and decision makers. Description of Academic Advising Sessions MXC College Advisors will engage in appreciative and intentional advising so that students will be aware of the steps they need to take to reach their educational goals and the resources available to assist them in the educational process. We connect with students while helping them realize their values, strengths, skills and passions. College Advisors work with students to help them plan academic programs that fulfill the graduation requirements of the City Colleges of Chicago. Olive-Harvey students are expected to be pro-active in their academic planning, but at times it is necessary to visit an Advisor!
