FADE IN:"A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far, away.It is a dark time for the Rebellion. Although the DeathStar has been destroyed, Imperial troops have driven theRebel forces from their hidden base and pursued them acrossthe galaxy.Evading the dreaded Imperial Starfleet, a group of freedomfighters led by Luke Skywalker has established a new secretbase on the remote ice world of Hoth.The evil lord Darth Vader, obsessed with finding youngSkywalker, has dispatched thousands of remote probes intothe far reaches of space."EXT. GALAXY – PLANET HOTHA Star Destroyer moves through space, releasing Imperialprobe robots from its underside. One of these probes zoomstoward the planet Hoth and lands on its ice-coveredsurface. An explosion marks the point of impact.EXT. HOTH – METEORITE CRATER – SNOW PLAIN – DAYA weird mechanical sound rises above the whining of thewind. A strange probe robot, with several extended sensors,emerges from the smoke-shrouded crater. The ominousmechanical probe floats across the snow plain anddisappears into the distance.EXT. PLAIN OF HOTH – DAYA small figure gallops across the windswept ice slope. Thebundled rider is mounted on a large gray snow lizard, aTauntaun. Curving plumes of snow rise from beneath thespeeding paws of the two-legged beast. The rider gallops upa slope and reins his lizard to a stop. Pulling off hisprotective goggles, Luke Skywalker notices something in thesky. He takes a pair of electrobinoculars from his utilitybelt and through them sees smoke rising from where theprobe robot has crashed. The wind whips at Luke's fur-linedcap and he activates a comlink transmitter. His Tauntaunshifts and moans nervously beneath him.LUKE(into comlink)Echo Three to Echo Seven. Han,old buddy, do you read me?After a little static a familiar voice is heard.
2.HAN(over comlink)Loud and clear, kid. What's up?LUKE(into comlink)Well, I finished my circle. Idon't pick up any life readings.HAN(over comlink)There isn't enough life on thisice cube to fill a space cruiser.The sensors are placed. I'm goingback.LUKE(into comlink)Right. I'll see you shortly.There's a meteorite that hit theground near here. I want to checkit out. It won't take long.Luke clicks off his transmitter and reins back on hisnervous lizard. He pats the beast on the head to calm it.LUKEHey, steady girl. What's thematter? You smell something?Luke takes a small device from his belt and starts toadjust it when suddenly a large shadow falls over him frombehind. He hears a monstrous howl and turns to see aneleven-foot-tall shape towering over him. It is a Wampa IceCreature, lunging at him ferociously.Aaargh!LUKELuke grabs for his pistol, but is hit flat in the face by ahuge white claw. He falls unconscious into the snow and ina moment the terrified screams of the Tauntaun are cutshort by the horrible snap of a neck being broken.The Wampa Ice Creature grabs Luke by one ankle and dragshim away across the frozen plain.EXT. HOTH – REBEL BASE ENTRANCE – DAYA stalwart figure rides his Tauntaun up to the entrance ofan enormous ice cave.
3.INT. HOTH – REBEL BASE – MAIN HANGAR DECKRebel troopers rush about unloading supplies and otherwisesecuring their new base. The rider, Han Solo, swings offhis lizard and pulls off his goggles. He walks into themain hangar deck toward the Millennium Falcon, which isparked among several fighters. Mechanics, R2 units, andvarious other droids hurry about. Han stops at theMillennium Falcon where his Wookiee copilot, Chewbacca, iswelding on a central lifter. Chewie stops his work andlifts his face shield, growling an irritated greeting tohis boss.Chewie!HANThe Wookiee grumbles a reply.HANAll right, don't lose yourtemper. I'll come right back andgive you a hand.Chewbacca puts his mask back on and returns to his weldingas Han leaves.INT. HOTH – REBEL BASE – COMMAND CENTERA makeshift command center has been set up in a blastedarea of thick ice. The low-ceilinged room is a beehive ofactivity. Controllers, troops, and droids move aboutsetting up electronic equipment and monitoring radarsignals. General Rieekan straightens up from a console atHan's approach.Solo?RIEEKANHANNo sign of life out there,General. The sensors are inplace. You'll know if anythingcomes around.RIEEKANCommander Skywalker reported inyet?HANNo. He's checking out a meteoritethat hit near him.
4.RIEEKAN(indicates radar screen)With all the meteor activity inthis system, it's going to bedifficult to spot approachingships.Taking a deep breath, Han blurts out what is on his mind.HANGeneral, I've got to leave. Ican't stay anymore.Princess Leia, standing at a console nearby, is dressed ina short white combat jacket and pants. Her hair is brainedand tied across her head in a Nordic fashion. She overhearstheir conversation and seems somewhat distressed.RIEEKANI'm sorry to hear that.HANWell, there's a price on my head.If I don't pay off Jabba the Hut,I'm a dead man.RIEEKANA death mark's not an easy thingto live with. You're a goodfighter, Solo. I hate to loseyou.HANThank you, General.He turns to Leia as Rieekan moves away.HAN(with feeling)Well, Your Highness, I guess thisis it.LEIAThat's right.Leia is angry. Han sees she has no warmth to offer him. Heshakes his head and adopts a sarcastic tone.HAN(coolly)Well, don't get all mushy on me.So long, Princess.Han walks away into the quiet corridor adjoining thecommand center. Leia stews a moment, then hurries afterhim.
5.INT. HOTH – REBEL BASE – ICE CORRIDORHan!LEIAHan stops in the corridor and turns to face Leia.HANYes, Your Highnessness?LEIAI thought you decided to stay.HANWell, the bounty hunter we raninto on Ord Mantell changed mymind.LEIAHan, we need you!We?Yes.HANLEIAHANOh, what about you need?LEIA(mystified)I need? I don't know what you'retalking about.HAN(shakes his head, fedup)You probably don't.LEIAAnd what precisely am I supposedto know?HANCome on! You want me to staybecause of the way you feel aboutme.LEIAYes. You're a great help to us.You're a natural leader.HANNo! That's not it. Come on. Aahhh– uh huh! Come on.
6.Leia stares at him, understanding, then laughs.LEIAYou're imagining things.HANAm I? Then why are you followingme? Afraid I was going to leavewithout giving you a goodbyekiss?LEIAI'd just as soon kiss a Wookiee.HANI can arrange that. You could usea good kiss!Angrily, Han strides down the corridor as Leia stares afterhim.INT. HOTH – REBEL BASE – ANOTHER ICE CORRIDORA familiar stream of beeps and whistles herald the approachof Artoo-Detoo and See-Threepio, who appear around a cornerand move along an ice wall toward the main hangar.THREEPIODon't try to blame me. I didn'task you to turn on the thermalheater. I merely commented thatit was freezing in the princess'schamber. But it's supposed to befreezing. How are we going to dryout all her clothes? I reallydon't know.Artoo beeps a stream of protesting whistles.THREEPIOOh, switch off.INT. HOTH – REBEL BASE – MAIN HANGAR DECKThe two robots stop at Han Solo's space freighter. Han andChewie are struggling with their central lifters.HAN(to Chewie)Why do you take this apart now?I'm trying to get us out of hereand you pull both of these.Chewie grumbles in irritation.
7.THREEPIOExcuse me, sir.HAN(to Chewie)Put them back together right now.THREEPIOMight I have a word with you,please?HANWhat do you want?THREEPIOWell, it's Princess Leia, sir.She's been trying to get you onthe communicator.HANI turned it off. I don't want totalk to her.THREEPIOOh. Well, Princess Leia iswondering about Master Luke. Hehasn't come back yet. She doesn'tknow where he is.HANI don't know where he is.THREEPIONobody knows where he is.HANWhat do you mean, "nobody knows"?Han glances at the fading light at the entrance of the icecave as night slowly begins to fall on the planet.THREEPIOWell, uh, you see.Han jumps down off the lift, as Threepio follows him.HANDeck Officer. Deck Officer!THREEPIOExcuse me, sir. Might I inqu –Han abruptly puts his hand over Threepio's mouth as thedeck officer approaches.Yes, sir?DECK OFFICER
8.HANDo you know where CommanderSkywalker is?DECK OFFICERI haven't seen him. It's possiblehe came in through the southentrance.HANIt's possible? Why don't you gofind out? It's getting dark outthere.Yes, sir.DECK OFFICERThe deck officer leaves hurriedly, as Han takes his handoff Threepio's mouth.THREEPIOExcuse me, sir. Might I inquirewhat's going on?Why not?HANTHREEPIOImpossible man. Come along,Artoo, lets find Princess Leia.Between ourselves, I think MasterLuke is in considerable danger.INT. HOTH – REBEL BASE – MAIN ICE TUNNELThe deck officer and his assistant hurry toward Han as heenters the tunnel.DECK OFFICERSir, Commander Skywalker hasn'tcome in through the southentrance. He might have forgottento check in.HANNot likely. Are the speedersready?DECK OFFICERNot yet. We're having sometrouble adapting them to thecold.HANThen we'll have to go out onTauntauns.
9.DECK OFFICERSir, the temperature's droppingtoo rapidly.HANThat's right. And my friends outin it.ASSISTANT OFFICERI'll cover sector twelve. Havecom-control set screen alpha.Han pushes through the troops and mounts a Tauntaun.DECK OFFICERYour Tauntaun'll freeze beforeyou reach the first marker.HANThen I'll see you in hell!Han maneuvers his mount out of the cave and races into thedark bitter night.EXT. HOTH – ICE GORGE – DUSKThe jagged face of a huge ice wall sits gloomily in the dimtwilight of a Hoth day. Luke hangs upside down, anklesfrozen into icy stalactites, his extended arms within afoot of the snow floor. One side of his face is covered ina dried mask of frozen blood. He opens his eyes as achilling moan of the hideous ice creature echoes off thegorge walls. Luke pulls himself up, grabs hold of hisankles, and futilely tries to unfasten the throngs.Exhausted, he drops back into his hanging position. As hehangs there, he spies his lightsaber lying near a pile ofhis discarded gear, about three feet out of reach. Hefocuses on the saber and, as his hand strains toward theweapon, he squeezes his eyes tight in concentration. Justas the ice creature looms over Luke, the lightsaber jumpsinto Luke's hand. The young warrior instantly ignites hissword, swinging up, and cuts himself loose from the ice. Heflops to the snow in a heap. The startled creature movesback, his giant yellow eyes blinking. Luke scrambles to hisfeet. He swings his lightsaber and the beast screams inpain.EXT. HOTH – ENTRANCE TO ICE GORGE – DUSKLuke staggers out of the gorge into the dark and snowytwilight. Weak and exhausted, he stumbles down a snow bank.
10.EXT. HOTH – SNOW PLAIN – DUSKA small, lone figure riding a Tauntaun races through thehostile vastness of snow and cold. As it runs, theTauntaun's legs kick up large clouds of snow and ice intothe snowy air.EXT. HOTH – OUTSIDE ICE HANGAR – DUSKArtoo stands in the falling snow, beeping worriedly.Threepio moves stiffly over to him.THREEPIOYou must come along now, Artoo.There's really nothing more wecan do. And my joints arefreezing up.Artoo beeps, long and low.THREEPIODon't say thing like that! Ofcourse we'll see Master Lukeagain. He'll be quite all right,you'll see.(to himself)Stupid little short-circuit.He'll be quite all right.Threepio turns to go back inside the main hangar as Artoomournfully keeps his vigil.EXT. HOTH – SNOW DRIFT – DUSKThe wind is blowingstay upright, but aHe struggles to getfrom Tatooine dragscollapses.quite strong now. Luke struggles toblast of freezing snow knocks him over.up, but he can't. The young warriorhimself a couple of feet and thenINT. REBEL BASE – MAIN HANGAR DECK – ENTRANCE – NIGHTPrincess Leia stands inside the dark entrance to the Rebelbase, waiting for a sign of the two Rebel heroes. Sheshivers in the cold wind as, nearby, Chewie sits with hishead in his hands. In the background, Artoo and Threepiomove through the doors.A Rebel lieutenant moves to Major Derlin, an officerkeeping watch with the princess.
11.LIEUTENANTSir, all the patrols are in.There's still no contact fromSkywalker or Solo.THREEPIOMistress Leia, Artoo saysbeen quite unable to picksignals, although he doesthat his own range is farweak to abandon all hope.he'sup anyadmittooLeia nods an acknowledgment, but she is lost in thought.DERLINYour Highness, there's nothingmore we can do tonight. Theshield doors must be closed.He turns to the lieutenant.DERLINClose the doors.Yes, sir.LIEUTENANTThe lieutenant walks away. Chewie lets out a long, mournfulhowl, somewhat like a coyote. At the same moment, Artoobegins a complex series of efficient beeps.THREEPIOArtoo says the chances ofsurvival are seven hundredseventy-five.to one.Leia stands praying to herself as the huge metal doors slamacross the entrance of the ice cave. The loud booms echothroughout the huge cavern. Chewie lets out anothersuffering howl.THREEPIOActually, Artoo has been known tomake mistakes. from time totime. Oh, dear, oh, dear. Don'tworry about Master Luke. I'm surehe'll be all right. He's quiteclever, you know. for a humanbeing.EXT. HOTH – SNOW DRIFT – DUSKLuke lies face down in the snow, nearly unconscious. Slowlyhe looks up and sees Ben Kenobi, barely visible through theblowing snow. It is hard to tell if Kenobi is real or ahallucination.
12.BENLuke. Luke.Ben?LUKE(weakly)BENYou will go to the Dagobahsystem.LUKEDagobah system?BENThere you will learn from Yoda,the Jedi Master who instructedme.The image of Ben fades, revealing a lone Tauntaun riderapproaching from the windswept horizon.LUKE(groaning faintly)Ben. Ben.Luke drops into unconsciousness.Han pulls up and leaps off his mount. He hurries to hissnow-covered friend, cradling him in his arms. Han'sTauntaun lets out a low, pitiful bellow. But Han's concernis with Luke, and he shakes him urgently.HANLuke! Luke! Don't do this, Luke.Come on, give me a sign here.Luke doesn't respond. Han begins frantically rubbing andslapping Luke's unconscious face. As he starts to lift theyouth, Han hears a rasping sound behind him. He turns, justin time to see his Tauntaun stagger and then fall over intothe snow.Han carries Luke to the moaning beast. Then, with a finalgroan, the Tauntaun expires.HANNot much time.He pushes Luke's inert form against the belly of the deadbeast.LUKE(moaning)Ben. Ben.
13.HANHang on, kid.LUKEDagobah system.Han ignites Luke's saber and cuts the beast from head totoe. He quickly tosses it's steaming innards into the snow,then lifts Luke's inert form and stuffs him inside thecarcass.HAN(reeling from the odor)Whew.Dagobah.LUKEHANThis may smell bad, kid.LUKE(moaning)Yoda.HAN. but it will keep you warm.til I get the shelter built.(struggling to get Lukein the carcass)Ooh. I thought they smelled badon the outside!The wind has picked up considerably, making it difficult tomove. Han removes a pack from the dead creature's back,taking out a shelter container. He begins to set up whatcan only be a pitiful protection against a bitter Hothnight.EXT. HOTH – SNOWDRIFT – DAWNFour snub-nosed armored snowspeeders race across the whitelandscape.INT. SNOWSPEEDER COCKPITThere is only one pilot, Zev, in the enclosed two-mancraft. He concentrates on the scopes which ring hiscockpit. He hears a low beep from one of his monitors.ZEV(into transmitter)Echo Base. I've got something!Not much, but it could be a lifeform.
14.EXT. HOTH – SNOWDRIFTThe small craft banks and makes a slow arc, then races offin a new direction.INT. SNOWSPEEDER – COCKPITThe pilot switches over to a new transmitter.ZEV(into transmitter)This is Rouge Two. this is RougeTwo. Captain Solo, so you copy?Commander Skywalker, do you copy?This is Rouge Two.There is a sharp crackle of static, then a faint voice.HAN(filtered over Zev'sreceiver)Good morning. Nice of you guys todrop by.ZEV(switching transmitters)Echo Base. this is Rouge Two. Ifound them. Repeat, I found them.EXT. HOTH – SNOWDRIFT – DAYThe small shelter Han set up is covered with snow on thewindward side. A makeshift antenna rests gingerly on topthe snowdrift. Han spots Zev's snowspeeder approaching inthe distance, and begins waving his arms frantically at thetiny craft.INT. REBEL BASE – MEDICAL CENTERStrange robot surgeons adjust a mass of electronicequipment. A switch is thrown and a sudden blinding flashobscures Luke in a bacta tank filled with a thick,gelatinous slime. He begins to thrash about, raving indelirium.INT. REBEL BASE – MEDICAL CENTER – RECOVERY ROOMLuke sits up in a recovery-room bed, weak but smiling. Hisface shows terrible wounds from the Wampa's attack.Threepio and Artoo enter the room.
15.THREEPIOMaster Luke, sir, it's good tosee you fully functional again.Artoo beeps his good wishes.THREEPIOArtoo expresses his relief, also.Han and Chewie make their entrance. The Wookiee growls agreeting.HANHow are you feeling, kid? Youdon't look so bad to me. In fact,you look strong enough to pullthe ears off a Gundark.LUKEThanks to you.HANThat's two you owe me, junior.Han turns as Leia enters the room. He looks at her with abig, devilish grin.HANWell your Worship, looks like youmanaged to keep me around for alittle while longer.LEIA(haughtily)I had nothing to do with it.General Rieekan thinks it'sdangerous for any ships to leavethe system until we've activatedthe energy shield.HANThat's a good story. I think youjust can't bear to let a gorgeousguy like me out of your sight.LEIAI don't know where you get youdelusions, laser brain.Chewie is amused; he laughs in his manner. Han, enjoyinghimself, regards Chewie good-humoredly.HANLaugh it up, fuzz ball. But youdidn't see us alone in the southpassage.
16.Luke sparks to this; he looks at Leia.HANShe expressed her true feelingsfor me.Leia is flushed, eyes darting between Luke and Han.LEIAMy.! Why, you stuck up,. halfwitted,. scruffy-looking.nerf-herder!HANWho's scruffy-looking?(to Luke)I must have hit her pretty closeto the mark to get her all riledup like that, huh, kid?Leia looks vulnerable for a moment, then the mask fallsagain, and she focuses on Luke.LEIAWhy, I guess you don't knoweverything about women yet?With that she leans over and kisses Luke on the lips. Thenshe turns on her heel and walks out, leaving everyone inthe room slightly dumbstruck. With some smugness, Luke putshis hands behind his head and grins.Suddenly, in the distance, the muffled sound of an alarm isheard.ANNOUNCER(over loudspeaker)Headquarters personnel, report tocommand center.The voice repeats the order and Han, Chewie, Artoo, andThreepio hurry out of the room, bidding farewell to Luke.HANTake it easy.THREEPIOExcuse us, please.INT. HOTH – REBEL BASE – COMMAND CENTERRieekan looks up grimly from a console screen. He callsover to Leia and Han.RIEEKANPrincess. we have a visitor.
17.The group hurries over to Rieekan.RIEEKANWe've picked up something outsidethe base in zone twelve, movingeast.SENIOR CONTROLLERIt's metal.LEIAThen it couldn't be one of thosecreatures that attacked Luke.HANIt could be a speeder, one ofours.SENIOR CONTROLLERNo. Wait – there's something veryweak coming through.Threepio steps up to the control panel and listens intentlyto the strange signal.THREEPIOSir, I am fluent in six millionforms of communication. Thissignal is not used by theAlliance. It could be an Imperialcode.The transmission ends in static.HANIt isn't friendly, whatever itis. Come on, Chewie, let's checkit out.RIEEKANSend Rouges Ten and Eleven tostation three-eight.EXT. HOTH – SNOW PLAIN – DAYThe dark probe robot moves past the smoldering ruins ofstation three-eight and down a ridge toward the Rebel base.It raises a large antenna from the top of its head andbegins to send out a piercing signal.The probe droid has spotted Chewbacca who, not thirty feetaway, has popped his head over a snow bank. Instantly, theprobe robot swings around, its deadly ray ready to fire.But before it can get a shot off, it is hit from behind bya laser bolt, and explodes i
