AT OURNOVEMBER MEETING:BYBRAD PIINICINDY HILLCindy Hill was our November guestspeaker. Her topic was My Ten FavoriteOrchidsWhat makes an orchid a favorite? Simplethings, according to Cindy. The orchids haveto be good bloomers, they must be reliable intheir blooming habits, and the flowers mustbe of good size and long lasting. The plantitself must be compact, have an appealinggrowth habit and be available in multipleclones or natural varieties. It should also befragrant.Cindy’s first favorite was Laelia jongheana. This plant has flowersthat are 5 to 6 inches in width and last up to 4 weeks. The flower itselfhas a beautiful, delicate frilly, lacey lip. It’s a cool growing orchid andmature plants are available.How do you make this a happy growing plant? It likes it cool to coldcondition, but is tolerant of heat for a short period of time. Constant airmovement is a requirement, so it grows best when mounted rather than3

potted. This orchid should be watereddaily when its root tips are green. Alwaysavoid watering the buds and flowers.When this plant is exposed to bright lightthe blossoms will be a deeper color.Rlc Goldenzelle ‘LemonChiffon’ AM/AOSDen. kanburienseThe second favorite orchid describedwas Cleisocentron gokusingii.This orchid is really blue!!! It blooms severaltimes per year. It has a compact growthhabit, usually not exceeding 12 to 16 inchesin height.4

When it does flower it has between 5-30 blossoms at a time and the inflorescencecomes out of the base of the plant. It’s a vandaceous type of orchid.How do you make this plant happy? It needs to be grown in intermediate to coolconditions. You should use a net pot so that the roots get ample air circulation. Itlikes bright light without heat. This orchid requires daily watering when in growth.The third favorite orchid is Cochlioda noezliana. What makes this one ofCindy’s favorite orchids is the vibrant tomato - orange color. The flowers exhibitmultiple pigment layers. There are 6 to 25 flowers per inflorescence and eachblossom is one to two inches in size. How do you make this plant happy? Grow it inintermediate to cool conditions. It likesconstant air movement and excellentdrainage, so it should be mounted or in anet basket. This orchid grows best in highhumidity and likes it wet,wet,wet. It needsbright diffused light and if it’s grown tooshady it won’t bloom for you.Den. Spider LilyFavorite plant number four wasCoelogyne kaliana. What makes his plantspecial? It has crystalline white flowers.Each inflorescence has 10 to 25 long lasting3-inch flowers.5

The foliage is a bronze to deep green colorand the plant has a tidy growth habit. How doyou grow this plant so that it’s happy? Do notdisturb its roots. Use the slip pot method whenit out grows its current container. It prefersto be grown in mesh basket with small bark.This will provide it with excellent drainage.This plant likes to be grown in intermediatetemperatures with dappled light to deep shade.It prefers to be watered heavily daily.Ddc. cobbianumFavorite plant number five was Laeliaspeciosa. This plant has large flowers thatare 6 inches across. It’s a very rugged plantwith 1 to 5 blooms. It is slightly fragrant and achallenge to grow. Laelia speciosa ‘Jupiter’ isthe gold medal winner. How do you make this ahappy plant? First off, do not water it until itblooms in the spring. In nature this plantexperiences 7 months of drought per year. Thismeans that during November through Marchonly mist the plant, do not water it. During itsgrowth cycle this orchid likes lots of water butit must dry quickly. Resume watering after itflowers in May. It prefers intermediate6

cool to cold conditions, bright light, and constant airmovement. It likes to be mounted on a stick.Favorite plant number six was Coelogyne usitana.This plant exhibits good color and ever lengtheninginflorescences that grow in a zigzag pendant pattern. Theflowers are two inches across and the plant isof moderate size. The award winner is Ramon De LosSantos. How do you make this a happy plant? Pot this orchidin a plastic pot with small tree fern mix. Don’t divide thisplant and don’t damage the flower tips. It has to be hungbecause the inflorescences are pendent. It prefersC. Adi Lady Lala‘Ultima’Fdk. After Darkintermediate to warm growing conditionsand does not require a winter rest. Itprefers bright light.Favorite plant number seven wasDendrobium aurantiflammeum. Whatmakes this plant one of Cindy’s favorites isits brilliant tangerine color.7

It has 15 to 30 flowers and bloomseveral times per year. How do you makethis a happy plant? Grow this orchid inintermediate to cool conditions, mounted ona tree fern fiber with sphagnum moss. Do notdisturb the roots or the old canes becausethe plant blooms off the old canes. It prefersindirect light.Liparis vividifloraFavorite plant number eight was Neofinetiafalcata. This plant has beautiful long lastingwhite flowers with a lovely fragrance anda long nectar tube. This is one of the mostexpensive orchids. Subtle variations of itsleaves, flowers and roots cause this plant’svalue to vary greatly.Isabelia pulchella8

It can be grown on a windowsill. How do you growthis plant happy? This orchid can be grown in pots ormounted. If you do pot it, it needs to be potted up highabove the level of the pot. It is tolerant of hot and colddown to freezing temperatures. If you have to repot thisplant, do it only in the winter time. It prefers good lightand needs to be kept moist in the growing season andalmost dry in the winter.Favorite plant number nine was Miltoniopsisphalaenopsis. This plant has a beautiful fragrance. Theblossoms are two to two and one half inches wide andthe flowers last six to eight weeks. The plant grows 10 14 inches in height and produces two inflorescences perbulb. How do you make this a happy plant? This plantprefers to growin intermediate to cool conditions. It likesto be planted in a clay pot with moss or a small pot withbark. This orchid needs to be moist all year long with ahumidity of 50%. It likes moderate light.Bulb. longisepalumFavorite plant number ten was Schoenorchis buddleiflora. This plant comes fromBorneo and has 25 to 40 lilac colored flowers with a pendant growth pattern. Howdo you make this plant happy? It prefers intermediate temperature. It prefers to bemounted and will not grow in a pot. You need to water the plant year round and itprefers moderate to bright light.9
