This lab resides in veryclose proximity to both patient care areas and thedepartment administrative offices to allow easy labaccess (24/7 with badge access to surgical traineesand faculty only) to surgical personnel. The Clinical Skills Center (CSC) at Stony BrookMedicine provides participants with opportunities forhands-on training in a safe environment. It is a state-of-the-art training center that isused as a resource for specialized training ofphysicians and other healthcare professionals.Participants evaluate and diagnose patients throughteaching modules that incorporate theuse of actor patients and computerized mannequinsthat simulate disease. The lab contains various training resourcesnecessary for both traditional and minimallyinvasive techniques. Resources range from thoseapplicable to basic open skills (knot tying, suturing, IVaccess, central line, tube thoracostomy), advancedopen skills (hernia anatomy/repair, anastomoses, endarterectomy, aneurysm repair), and minimallyinvasive skills.Resources directed at minimally invasive techniquesrange from basic trainers to complex simulatorsdirected at the development of basic and advancedminimally invasive skills, respectively. This includeslaparoscopic trainers aimed to develop the basicskill competencies required for the Fundamentalsof Laparoscopic Surgery (FLS) program. Similarly, endoscopy simulators are available for thedevelopment of the endoscopic knowledge and skillsrequired by the Society of American Gastrointestinaland Endoscopic Surgery (SAGES) Fundamentalsof Endoscopic Surgery (FES) program.
