The science of better PT.Proficiency Testing (PT) offerings from the CAP are supported by 600 experts in laboratorymedicine serving on 32 scientific committees. These experts track testing trends, monitortechnical advances, and work collaboratively with professional colleagues and medicalspecialty societies to improve the quality of testing.Through their efforts, PT programs from the CAP are based on the latest scientificinformation and reflect the current needs of laboratory medicine. This expertise notonly drives improvements in the laboratory, it helps propel advancements in the in vitrodiagnostics industry.CAP science in action: Improving Hemoglobin A1c PTThe CAP has worked with the National Glycohemoglobin Standardization Program(NGSP) in tightening of the accuracy-based grading by using NGSP targets for theCAP Hemoglobin A1c PT. When the accuracy-based grading started in 2007, 15%was the initial acceptable limit. In 2019, we use 6%. In response to the tightenedgrading, the manufacturers have improved their assays and PT results are now morereflective of the patient results. This was made possible by using fresh whole bloodspecimens in the Hemoglobin A1c program (GH5).This improvement in hemoglobin A1c assays contributes to better patient care andthe use of A1c as a means of diagnosing and monitoring diabetes.Only the CAP makes such an extensive use of scientific committees and experts.When you rely on CAP PT, you’re assured that everything offered is based on the latestscientific advances, and an unrelenting drive for excellence.

Continuing Education ProgramsContinuing Certification (CC)Continuing Certification (CC), formerly known as Maintenance of Certification (MOC) is the board certification program thatinvolves continuous professional development and ensures that an American Board of Pathology (ABP) board-certifiedpathologist is committed to lifelong learning and competency in a specialty and/or subspecialty.2Continuing EducationThere are six competency categories defined by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) and endorsed by the ABPto fulfill specific CC requirements. They are listed below with their descriptions.All CAP education activities providing CME credits meet the CC Part II: Lifelong Learning requirements. Some programs willmeet the requirements for Self-Assessment Module (SAM) and/or CC Part IV at the laboratory or the individual levels. Programsthat meet Part IV are identified within the description of the program.
