MEMBER SPOTLIGHTCable Lift Inclined ElevatorsBy Accumar CorporationIt was 1959 on Bainbridge Island, Washington, when BrinSprague decided that it was too dangerous for the family tobe walking 200’ down a narrow path to get to the beachesof Puget Sound. The 50-degree slope full of trees wasintermittently wet, and had a nasty habit of sloughing off, making trail maintenancedifficult. A mechanicalengineer who haddesigned and built manydifferent conveyances,Brin devised a method oftraversing the steep 100’slope without touching it.The family named it“ The Cable Lif t.” The1959 car rode betweentwo stationary cables, essentially fixed rails. Ahoisting cable did theCable Lift providing beach accesswork via a traditionalworm-gear reducer with a winding drum. The wormgear was selected carefully with a gear ratio that couldpredictably hold the load regardless of the additionalbrake being used. The hoist had limit switches and strongindustrial parts, but was essentially very simple. The carhad a broken rope brake, and the cables lined up nicelywith two large trees backed from the edge of the slope. Theclosest tree made a nice place to mount the hoist a few feetoff the ground, while 30’ back, the second fir made a niceanchor for the fixed cables. Trees? Clearly there was somefree thinking going on in the middle of the last century. In 1986, Scott Sprague, Nathan Smith, and Bill Carter, threeamigos who worked together in boat building and design, along with Brin, were approached by a local architect whoasked them if they could build him a Cable Lift. Brin hadbuilt a few Cable Lifts, but long ago decided not to make abusiness out of it, said, “They can make you one.” And theydid. As soon as it was finished, word got out and the phonewas ringing for more. The simple Cable Lift evolved into aproper elevator with all the modern safeties and features.Suspended on cables, the Cable Lift was originally thoughtof as an aerial tram. After long consideration, the Chief atthe Washington State Elevator Department agreed to putit into the elevator program as a type of residential inclinedelevator (RIE). Since the fixed cables had an engineeredamount of deflection, unlike the usual rails, a variance wasgiven to accommodate the deflection of the “cable rails.”Most parts of the code otherwise worked well with theCable Lift.8MAINLINEAccumar builds solid rail trams (calling them Track Lifts) aswell as the Cable Lifts. The Track Lifts have the advantageof using less space at the top of the slope, and work beston relatively short, stable slopes. However, the Cable Liftshave the advantage of being anchored only at the top andbottom, without the need for intermediate supports, sonormally no part even touches the slope face. With thesteep unstable slopes that are ubiquitous in WashingtonState, that is a very strong advantage and the major reasonthat 80% of the lifts Accumar has built are Cable Lifts. Theother reason is that they are much more invisible on theslope than solid rail structures, and that low visual impactis a more attractive feature where a natural look is valued.Inclined elevatordown the face ofGrand Coulee Dam,designed by BrintonSprague, ScottSprague’s fatherand a pioneer indeveloping Cable Liftinclined elevators forAccumar.A hybrid version of the Cable Lift that does haveintermediate supports called bank struts, are typicallyused to gain clearance on convex slopes with “humps”or obstacles in the path. They use a tensioning device tostraighten the support cables as the car approaches a bankstrut so it rides over smoothly. Once the car is configuredfor bank struts, as many can be used as necessary. With Cable Lifts, a long run doesn’t cost much more thana short run; it’s mostly just more cable. That’s not truefor Track Lifts. One of the major expenses of a Track Liftis building the foundation supports on a steep slope, andlonger runs mean more of them. Keeping those tracksstraight over time is often a maintenance problem whereslopes are marginally stable. All the components for the elevators that Accumar buildsare designed and built in-house. Components are built ofmarine grade aluminum, stainless steel and galvanizedsteel. Although a lot of the parts are common to either theTrack Lifts or the Cable Lifts, each conveyance installationhas custom details, so every site has its own unique design.Accumar uses both geotechnical and structural engineerson each project. The certified control systems are alsobuilt in house. Accumar uses the hoisting cables to connecton-board control communications, so no radios or t
