Penelitimenggunakan penelitian diskriptif kualitatif yang mana tidak membutuhkanpengolahan data dalam menganalisis drama ini. Sumber data primer dari penelitianini adalah naskah drama A Woman of No Importance karya Oscar Wilde. Sedangkansumber data sekunder dari penelitian ini adalah buku-buku, internet, dan sumberlain yang mendukung analisis tersebut. Teknik dalam pengumpulan data adalahdengan mengumpulkan beberapa data, membaca naskah drama, mengidentifikasidata, membuat catatan, dan mengumpulkan data berdasarkan data yang sama.Berdasarkan penelitian ini, peneliti mendapat beberapa kesimpulan yaitu bahwa didalam karyanya, Oscar Wilde melakukan kritikan tentang moral kemunafikan yangada pada diri Mrs. Arbuthnot yang merupakan orang tua tunggal dan memiliki anakdi luar pernikahan. Dan Lord Illingworth merupakan orang dari kalangan atasmenganggap segala hal yang dia lakukan itu baik, namun di balik itu semua diamemiliki hubungan terlarang dengan Mrs. Arbuthnot di masa lalu hingga lahirGerald. Selain itu, Lord Illingworth juga digambarkan sebagai orang yang tidakbermoral karena menganggap wanita sebagai mainan dan mencoba melecehkanHester yang merupakan seorang Puritan. Object of this studywas to analyze the drama A Woman of No Importance by Oscar Wilde as structuralelements in the drama, the background of the Victorian era, and using sociologicalapproach to analysis this drama. Researchers used descriptive qualitative researchwhich requires no processing of data in analyzing this drama. Sources of primarydata from this study was the script of the play A Woman of No Importance by OscarWilde. While, secondary data sources of this study are the books, the Internet, andother sources that support the analysis. Techniques in the data collection are collectssome data, reading plays, identifies the data, making notes and collecting data based1

Then, Lord Illingworth is a person of high society considerseverything he did was good, but underneath it all he had an illicit relationship withMrs. Arbuthnot in the past to be born Gerald. Besides, Lord Illingworth is alsodescribed as being immoral because it considers women as toys and try toundermine Hester who was a Puritan. IntroductionThroughout the Victorian era movements for justice, freedom, and otherstrong moral values dominate opposed to greed, exploitation, and cynicism. InVictorian era concern in morality and one of the behaviors moral is hypocrisy.Hypocrisy may commentary over considerable immorality, thus maintainingthe respectability of the person position of power. Hypocrisy also claims thepractice of moral standard or beliefs of human behaviors. Based on that, is ameasure of people that acts not consistent and always different all the time.Before the researcher writes this research paper, the researcher has foundthree previous studies about play A Woman of No Importance. The study of AWoman of No Importance has ever conducted by Dr. Marcia Vale (2006), herresearch is entitled Oscar Wilde’s Concept of Comedy as Reflected in His StoryComedies: Lady Windermere Fan, A Woman of No Importance, and TheImportance of Being Ernest, Mutia Sari Utami (2012) on her research is titleThe Pride to Be a Single Parent in Oscar Wilde’s A Woman of No Importance(1893): Feminist Perspective, and Budiyono Slamet (2014) on his researchwith entitled Portrait of Women in Oscar Wilde’s A Woman of No Importanceand George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion.Sociology is the study of relationship between individual with otherpeople in their society. August Comte (1798-1857) made a systematic attemptto create about sociology by way of the scientific study of society. That meansof all the societies able to develop through the following stages as religious,2

metaphysical, and scientific. It is because the social life should be built andwhen it is to achieve it should be maintained. Social influence in human life isa place in the community and recognized. Someone who is not recognized inthe community will feel excluded and dispose of it everyone is trying to beaccepted in society because humans are unable to live alone, have to socializewith others.Moreover, that was a very important era and can be compared to theimportance of the Oscar Wilde plays. Therefore, at 1983 Oscar Wilde made adrama with the title A woman of No Importance. It is one of popular melodramaof the late-nineteenth century literature. The play was premièred, on April 19𝑡ℎ1893 at London's Haymarket Theatre being success on the first performance.It consists of four acts, played by nine actors with the main theme is the secrets,and satirizes English upper-classes society. In addition, it is about secret,decision, truth, prides and hypocrisy.A Woman of No Importance talked about a woman who became a singleparent in Victorian Era. In addition, this drama told us about a serious protestagainst of Victorian gender inequality elaborately framed with perfectwitticism. In Victorian era, at England a woman that became a single parent,birth illegitimate son received well in society.According to the writer A Woman of No Importance is an interestingdrama. There are four aspects that make the writer be interested in this play.The first is A Woman of No Importance has uncommon story. The story seemsto expose the hypocrisies at the heart of their shallow society, it is rarely in thatyears. Second, this play has unique characters. The third aspect of interest in AWoman of No Importance is the value of this play. The last aspect is themorality of hypocrisy, the main topic in this play.In the late nineteenth-century, British people became hypocritical in theirmoral. In the Victorian, standards of personal morality can be seen in classsocial and the high levels of cohabitation without marriage and illegitimatebirths. Beside it, in Victorian era concern in morality and one of the behaviorsmoral is hypocrisy.3

Hypocrisy is a significant and exciting class of social judgment. It can beignored or not accepted and their reputations destroyed. Hypocrisy isinteresting because it high position on the list of objectionable human behaviorsand the hypocritical behavior itself may be rather harmless in somecircumstances. In addition, hypocrisy is a measure of human that acts notconsistent and always different all the time.2. Research MethodIn analyzing A Woman of No Importance (1893) play by Oscar Wilde,the researcher uses qualitative description research. The researcher does notuse calculation. The researcher using descriptive qualitative research whichrequires no processing of data in analyzing this drama. Type of data in thisresearch is descriptive qualitative that consists of words, phrases and setencesto analyze. The primary data source this study was the script of the play AWoman of No Importance by Oscar Wilde. While, secondary data sources ofthis study are the books, the Internet, and other sources that support theanalysis. The techniques of data collection that the the writer collects any data,that are primary and supporting data. Then, reading the script rapidly andimagine to understand the script of play and identify the data. After that, takingnotes and underlying the important words, phrase, and sentence that related tothe research and classify the data into the same categories.3. Finding and Discussiona. Finding1) Social AspectThere are several social aspects in the Victorian era such asupper class, middle class, and lower class. A Woman of No Importanceplay shows some social structure in the drama. In this drama, upperclass can be described by Hester as a daughter of a millionaire orphilanthropist.LORD ILLINGWORTH : American women are wonderfullyclever in concealing their parents.4

LADY HUNSTANTON : My dear Lord Illingworth, what do youmean? Miss Worsley, Caroline, is anorphan. Her father was a very wealthymillionaire or philanthropist, or both, Ibelieve, who entertained my son quitehospitably, when he visited Boston. I don'tknow how he made his money, originally.(A Woman of No Importance, Act I, SceneI)In other hand, in this drama also showing a person that comefrom lower class that was reflected by Gerald.LADY CAROLINE: Ah, yes! the young man who has a postin a bank. Lady Hunstanton is most kindin asking him here, and Lord Illingworthseems to have taken quite a fancy to him. Iam not sure, however, that Jane is right intaking him out of his position. In my youngdays, Miss Worsley, one never met anyone in society who worked for theirliving. It was not considered the thing.(A Woman of No Importance, Act I, SceneI)Nevertheless, in this drama a several persons who come fromupper class describes as a person that has not morality such as, LordIllingworth. Lord Illingworth also does not believe in the existence ofpuritan women. He thinks that a woman in the world just an object tobeing kissed. Then, he has a challenge with Mrs. Allonby to kissHester as a Puritan.MRS. ALLONBY: You think there is no woman in theworld who would object to being kissed?LORD ILLINGWORTH : Very few.MRS. ALLONBY: Miss Worsley would not let you kissher.LORD ILLINGWORTH : Are you sure?MRS. ALLONBY: Quite.LORD ILLINGWORTH : What do you think she'd do if I kissedher?MRS. ALLONBY: Either marry you, or strike you acrossthe face with her glove. What would youdo if she struck you across the face withher glove? (A Woman of No Importance,Act I, Scene I)5

Economyaspect in this drama be affected by the social condition of the people.In this drama, it was distinguished as upper and lower class. the peoplewho come upper class, they must not to work hard in their life. Theupper class live with glamorous without work hard in their live, theyusually begin their relationship with the same class. It is different withthe people who come from lower class, they must work hard everyday to connect their lives.Because of their life with glamorous, one of the character in AWoman of No Importance, Lord Alfred who person an upper-classsociety has many debt in his life to buy on luxury items such asjewelry.LADY STUTFIELDLORD ALFREDLADY STUTFIELDLORD ALFRED: [To LORD ALFRED.] How very, verycharming those goldtipped cigarettes ofyours are, Lord Alfred.: They are awfully expensive. I can onlyafford them when I'm in debt.: It must be terribly, terribly distressingto be in debt.: One must have some occupationnowadays. If I hadn't my debts Ishouldn't have anything to think about.All the chaps I know are in debt. LADYSTUTFIELD : But don't the people towhom you owe the money give you agreat, great deal of annoyance? I thinkwe all do fit in very nicely together. And Ihope our charming American visitor willcarry back pleasant recollections of ourEnglish country life. [To Footman.] Thecushion, there, Francis.And my shawl. TheShetland. Get the Shetland. [Exit Footmanfor shawl.] . Then, Politic aspect in this drama can be shown bythe position of the people in parliament. After that it also can bedescribed as a people who have influence in government. In A Womanof No Importance can be seen in the conversation between LadyCaroline and Sir John.LADY CAROLINE7: I think not, John. Well, you couldn't cometo a more charming place than this, MissWorsley, though the house is excessivelydamp, quite unpardonably damp, and dearLady Hunstanton is sometimes a little laxabout the people she asks down here. [ToSIR JOHN.] Jane mixes too much. LordIllingworth, of course, is a man of highdistinction. It is a privilege to meet him.

All of that is a part ofculture. In addition, culture also means of the human activity or humanbehavior as the display of their experience. In A Woman of NoImportance, it can be seen from the characters’ conversations, one ofthe example in the societies. It means what you have to do at presentis simply to fit yourself in societies.LORD ILLINGWORTH: Ah! she is not modern, and to be modern isthe only thing worth being nowadays. Youwant to be modern, don't you, Gerald? Youwant to know life as it really is. Not to beput off with any old-fashioned theoriesabout life. Well, what you have to do atpresent is simply to fit yourself for the8

best society. A man who can dominate aLondon dinner table can dominate theworld. The future belongs to the dandy. Itis the exquisites who are going to rule.GERALD: I should like to wear nice things awfully,but I have always been told that a manshould not think too much about hisclothes. (A Woman of No Importance, ActIII, Scene III)Based on above, fashion reflects where you come from. Whatthe person take was reflected their societies. Then, Lord Illingworthgive some advice to Gerald to change their fashion. It is because of hewants Gerald can be accepted in his societies after he become LordIllingworth’s secretary.Beside standard, education also affect a culture. This is can beseen in the Hester character that a clever person.LORD ILLINGWORTH : American women are wonderfullyclever in concealing their parents.LADY HUNSTANTON : My dear Lord Illingworth, what do youmean?
