Lower Intermediate Turkish - ISLA 533 D1 and ISLA 533 D2Fall 2017 and Winter 2018 terms (3 credits)Hours: MTR 12:35 pm - 1:25 pmRoom: Peel 3715 100Instructor: Mafalda AdeEmail: mafalda.ade@mcgill.caOffice hours (MOR 026): Thursdays 9:30-10:30 am; and 2:30-3:00 pm (by appointment)Course objectivesThe aim of Lower Intermediate Turkish will be to strengthen and deepen grammar skills acquired inIntroductory Turkish, and to give participants more insight into Turkish culture through reading, listeningand discussion of current events. As one of three main components of the course, students will be workingwith a chapter book throughout the year, which will include a step-by-step review of the basic grammaras well as an introduction to more advanced elements of the language such as the use of combined tenses,the conditional, and participles. The second component will be to work on oral skills; students will prepare,on a weekly basis, short presentations on different topics and using a variety of sources. The aim here willbe to further develop their ability to express themselves, to broaden their vocabulary, and to engage indialogues with their peers. The third component will be supplementary exercises that follow the weeklygrammar points, but which are not included in the book chapters or oral presentations.The complete course should allow participants to appropriate sufficient language skills and vocabulary tobe able to read more demanding texts in Turkish independently and understand the general topics andarguments of more involved conversations, as well as to express their opinion with clear and simplesentences.Course materialsStandard grammar:Dictionaries:- Turkish: An Essential Grammar, Aslı Göksel and Celia Kerslake, Routledge 2011or: - Turkish Grammar (Second Edition), Geoffrey Lewis, Oxford/New York: OxfordUniversity Press 2000.- Langenscheidt Pocket Dictionary Turkish, Resuhi Akdikmen or- Langenscheidt New Standard Dictionary, Langenscheidt KG, Berlin 2006 .- http://www.turkishdictionary.net.Chapter book:will be distributed in class, as well as additional texts and exercises.1

Evaluation (fall and winter terms)It is of utmost importance that students commit themselves not only to attend the classes but also to1) read and review the texts and the work done in class; 2) prepare and practise their presentations;and 3) do the homework (exercises AND vocabulary) on a near-to daily basis. The intensity of the coursecan only be maintained throughout the term if the subject matters taught in class are subsequentlyassimilated through practice and exercise.Participation:10%Homework (exercises):10%Short presentations (10 per term): 30%Mid-term exam (December 2017): 20%Final exam (April 2018):30%Absences:Students are asked to inform the instructor of their absences by email; too many absences will have aneffect on the participation mark.Homework:Homework for grading will be assigned on Mondays and is to be handed in at the beginning of class thefollowing Thursday. Penalties of 10% of the exercise grade will be applied per day of lateness.2
