Product InformationRENEP CGLP SLIDEWAY OILSHigh-performance slideway oils for machine tools, with excellent efitsThe quality of machined components depends heavilyon the accurate feed and accurate positioningprovided by machine tool slideways with slideway oilsplaying an important role. Slideway oils must providea stable, adhesive lubricating film in the presence ofmetalworking fluids even in micro-feed situations andwhen pressures are high. Good lubrication eliminateschattering and thus ripples on the surface ofcomponents caused by stick-slip. RENEP CGLP oils were developed together with theTribological Laboratory at the University of Darmstadtand the Laboratory for Tribology and SlidingTechnologies (SKC-Technik). Carefully selected baseoils and matched additives guarantee almost frictionfree movement at the lubrication points. Specialattention during development was also paid tocompatibility with the water-miscible cutting fluidsused in machine tools. Anti-corrosion agents andageing (oxidation) inhibitors are effective at relativelylow temperatures (working temperature roomtemperature). EP and anti-wear additives guaranteelong machine life and exceptionally good operationalreliability. Stable lubricating filmLow coefficient of frictionAvoidance of stick-slipGood EP properties and excellent protection againstwearExcellent corrosion protection(steel and non-ferrous metals)Good demulsification, optimum compatibility with water-misciblecutting fluidsExcellent compatibility with plastic materials(slideway materials)No discolouration of the slideway materialThe selected additive combinations create layerswhich have a low internal friction. Furthermore, polarsurface active substances form a stable, adhesivelubricating film. This reduces friction when movementstarts, lowers the initial current consumption andoptimises the efficiency of the machine tool.November 2015 GDUK Page 1 of 7FUCHS LUBRICANTS (UK) PLCNew Century Street, HanleyGB-Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, ST1 5HUTel 44-1782 -20 37 00Fax 44-1782 -20 20 73contact-uk@fuchs-oil.comHealth, Safety and Environment - information is provided for products in the relevant Safety Data Sheet. Product InformationApplicationTo reduce the power consumption during slidewaystart-ups and feed situations, special attention mustbe paid to the lubricant between the sliding elements.Important parameters for the selection of the mostsuitable slideway oil are the cutting fluid, the slidewaymaterials and the geometry of the lubrication grooves. The lubrication intervals must be matched to themachining operation and the design of the machine.Apart from the classic cast-cast, steel-cast and steelplastic slideway materials, there is an increasing trendtowards linear guides in machine tools. The RENEPCGLP series of products are also recommended forthese machine elements. Moreover, RENEP CGLP68 can also be used as a hydraulic oil according toDIN 51 524-2, ISO 6743-4. This product can thusperform the functions of a lubricant and a hydraulic oil.The RENEP CGLP oils were developed with therelevant technical application requirements ofslideway oils in mind. RENEP CGLP slideway oilswere supplied to all leading machine tool andcomponent manufacturers.Stable lubricating film, low coefficient offriction, avoidance of stick-slipThe RENEP CGLP series of oils contain surfaceactive substances which reduce the coefficient offriction. Stick-slip at low speed and at high loads iseffectively avoided. Various laboratory tests wereperformed to evaluate the sliding performance at slowfeeds and high loads. The SKC-Technik inclined tribometer test revealedvery low friction coefficients. For the bearing materialcombination GG 25/SKC 3, the friction coefficient ofRENEP CGLP 68 was 0.089 and 0.064 for RENEPCGLP 220. The static and dynamic coefficients ofRENEP CGLP slideway oils were determined on theUniversity of Darmstadt's tribotester. The lowcoefficients measured guarantee reliable and almost"friction- free" operation of machine tools. The FUCHS "Sliding Friction Apparatus" was used toevaluate the performance of RENEP CGLP slidewayoils in boundary friction conditions which areinfluenced by different cutting fluids and materialcombinations. No stick-slip occurred in the presenceof high loads and water-miscible cutting fluids.Good EP properties and excellentprotection against wearApart from surface-active polar substances, RENEPCGLP oils contain chemically-active agents whichstart working at room temperatures. These additivesystems perform at high loads and even when theslideway is almost dry, thus protecting slideways fromwear and seizures. The often very thin lubrication filmeffectively protects sliding components from wear.Even if the oil feed is interrupted, chemically-activelayers protect the slideway from micro-welding andseizures.Excellent corrosion protection for steeland nonferrous metalsDuring the development of RENEP CGLP slidewayoils, special emphasis was placed on good corrosionprotection. Even when water-miscible cutting fluidsare used, no corrosion occurs on the slideways. Thedanger of corrosion in the form of black discolourationis also minimised.November 2015 GDUK Page 2 of 7FUCHS LUBRICANTS (UK) PLCNew Century Street, HanleyGB-Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, ST1 5HUTel 44-1782 -20 37 00Fax 44-1782 -20 20 73contact-uk@fuchs-oil.comHealth, Safety and Environment - information is provided for products in the relevant Safety Data Sheet. Product InformationGood demulsification, optimumcompatibility with water-miscible cuttingfluidsDifficulties often arise when water-miscible cuttingfluids mix with slideway oils. The lubricating film canbe flushed off. The mixture of water-miscible cuttingfluid and slideway oil can also alter the tribologicalcharacteristics of the lubricant. The result is anincrease in the coefficient of friction and the currentconsumed by drive motors increases considerably.Mixtures of water miscible cutting fluids and slidewayoil can cause lacquering and the formation ofdeposits. These undesirable by-products often leadto slideway jamming or seizures. To avoid suchdifficulties, slideway oils and cutting fluids should havegood demulsification properties which are evaluatedby a series of laboratory tests.Stage 1: "Very good demulsification", i.e.phases are completely separated.Stage 2: Almost complete separationintermediate phase.withbothnoStage 3: Contains an oil and an intermediate phase.Stage 4: Contains an oil, emulsion and anintermediate phase, or an oil phase and anintermediate phase of 30% volume.Stage 5: Contains an emulsion and an intermediatephase.Stage 6: Showsnodemulsifying,i.e.theintermediate phase remains fully intact.Stages 1 and 2 indicate that the cuttingfluid - slideway oil combination displays "gooddemulsifying properties".Demulsification behaviour of slidewayoils and cutting fluids – SKC-Technik TestTest description:8 ml of oil and then 2 ml of a cutting fluid are pouredinto a 10 ml test tube. The concentration of thecutting fluid should be the manufacturer'srecommended value for milling, as a rule, between3 and 5%. The test tube is sealed and vigorouslyshaken before being intensively mixed by placing on afoam rubber-covered vibrating plate. The vibrationtime should be 30 seconds for VG 68 oils and 60seconds for VG 220 oils. The test tube must not behorizontal to the vibrating plate but some-whatinclined to ensure that both phases remain wellmixed. The resulting mixture is visually evaluatedafter 1 hour, 1 day and after 7 days.November 2015 GDUK Page 3 of 7FUCHS LUBRICANTS (UK) PLCNew Century Street, HanleyGB-Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, ST1 5HUTel 44-1782 -20 37 00Fax 44-1782 -20 20 73contact-uk@fuchs-oil.comHealth, Safety and Environment - information is provided for products in the relevant Safety Data Sheet. Product InformationDemulsification behaviour of slidewayoils and cutting fluids – DIN 51 599(modified)Test description:DIN 51 599 originally served to test the demulsifyingproperties of hydraulic and/or lubricating oils in oilwater mixtures. It can be applied to all lubricating oilswhich come into contact with water and which shouldnot form a stable emulsion. Demulsification accordingto this test measures the time required for an oil-watermixture to separate. The test requires specificquantities of the oil to be tested and water to bethoroughly mixed. The time needed for the mixture toseparate begins when all agitation ends.Themodification to cover slideway oil - cutting fluidcombinations is performed with these fluids.Sample quantity:The evaluation is based on the volume of theseparated Oil phase (mostly slightly cloudy) Cutting fluid phase Emulsion-mixture phasemeasured at 5 minute intervals, set-out in a table. The evaluation is made in line with DIN 51 848-1(Test Fields, Repeatability and Comparability). Ideally, full separation should occur within 1 hour. The modified DIN 51 599 procedure is considered byR D engineers to be the most important test for thedevelopment of slideway oils. All RENEP CGLP oilsare compatible with all FUCHS cutting fluids. They alldisplay excellent demulsifying properties and goodfriction coefficients when in mixtures.39.5 ml of oil39.5 ml of cutting fluid(at the concentration used, 3-5%)Temperature:Low viscosity oils up to 95 mm2/s:54ºC or room temperatureHigh viscosity oils greater than95 mm2/s: 82ºCTest duration:15 minutes - to reach temperature5 minutes - stirring or agitationEvery 5 minutes for 1 hour –reading-off resultsNovember 2015 GDUK Page 4 of 7FUCHS LUBRICANTS (UK) PLCNew Century Street, HanleyGB-Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, ST1 5HUTel 44-1782 -20 37 00Fax 44-1782 -20 20 73contact-uk@fuchs-oil.comHealth, Safety and Environment - information is provided for products in the relevant Safety Data Sheet.
