Refresher Advisor TrainingSpring 2011Academic Advising CenterChambers Hall 109x2596advising@middlesexcc.edu

Exemption from the ReadingPortion of the CPT The Office of the Registrar will now awardexemption from the Reading portion of theCollege Placement Test for any 12 credits fromother colleges. This includes English or Mathor Computer Science courses. This replacesthe previous level of 24 credits.2

Status Review Please remember that there is no automatic Deans’ StatusReview after either the wintersession or the summer session.Students who do well in either time frame will still need toappeal to their Dean to improve their academic status. Students on Restriction or Probation at the end of a Fall orSpring semester cannot be advised that their status willautomatically improve after a good grade in the winter orsummer. Please advise based on the previous status. Probation—four classes or 14 credits, whichever is fewer Restriction—two classes or 8 credits, whichever is fewer3

Appeals Remember that any advisor in the Center cannow field an appeal for a course that exceedsthe third attempt. Do not send a student to aDean for a fourth attempt appeal. Please besure that your signature and comments on theappeal are legible so that it can be enteredinto STRK by the Office of the Registrar andplease be specific with the terms of theappeal. Both Monica and I will field appeals to exceedthe “Rule of 15” and the maximum of 20credits.5

Important Reminders I Please be sure that the student has no remainingneed for developmental courses. Please do a“developmental inventory.” Remember the 15 credit/credit equivalent limit forstudents in developmental classes. When a student is adjusting a schedule to becompliant (status or developmental), please be sureto check the entire schedule for other possibleneeded changes. If a developmental class is deferred, please do theproper paperwork, especially the student’s name.Failure to do so can lead to real complications during6Non-Compliance.

Important Reminders II Remember that MAT 014 is not part of the RDG,ENG, and MAT developmental sequence triggeringSSD 101. Students in RDG 009 can only take the followingcredit courses—Math, SSD 101, SPE 121, or a foreignlanguage. They cannot register for BIO 010, CHM010, CHM 020. Students in majors such as PLS, HRI, and MAD havecourse sequences that need to be honored as best aspossible. (printed on back of the curriculum sheets) Remember that MAT 014 and a workingunderstanding of Microsoft Office or CSC 105/BUS7107 are the prerequisites for CSC 106.

Important Reminders III The importance of understanding the combination mathcourses with BIO 010 and CHM 010. Students who were unsuccessful in a combination math classmust take the lower math class when they retake the course. BIO 123 needs MAT 013, BIO 010, and CHM 020 as prerequisites while CHM 121/125 need MAT 014 and CHM 020as pre-requisites. CSC 133 and 161 need MAT 014 as a prerequisite. Advisors cannot sign for courses for transfer students if anRDG exemption is not evident in the system—the RDG testmust be taken. Please remember that new students cannot take thechallenge test until after they attend NSO.8

Another Reminder about CJ Two GE Math courses or Two 4-credit GESciences SCI 206 is not a 4 credit GE Science; SCI 220 isthe 4 credit Forensic Science. MAT 123 and 124 are recommended for CJmajors but MAT 101 and 102 are allowed.9

Reminders aboutMAT 010A and MAT 010B MAT 010 A is seen in Colleague as “BasicMathematics (Pa” MAT 010B is seen in Colleague as “BasicMathematics IB” 10

“Stepping Back” to the“A” Version of Math Students in the one semester version of MAT010, 013, 014, 129 are permitted to “stepback” to the “A” version of the course throughthe fourth week of a semester. Studentsneed to seek the permission of the MathDepartment to do so. As mentioned earlier, students who wereunsuccessful in a combination math classmust take the lower math when they retakethe course .14

MAT 014 and MAT 129 When advising a student in MAT 014 who wantsPrecalculus, ask about his/her grade expectation. Students receiving a grade of “B” or higher in MAT014 are able to register for MAT 129 (one semesterversion). Students receiving a grade of “C” or “C ” or “B-”must register for MAT 129A (two semester version).67 students were found non-compliant in thiscategory as they registered for 129 before their gradewas finalized.17

Repeating the two semesterversions of Math Courses Students who are unsuccessful in the “A”version of MAT 010 or MAT 013 or MAT 014 orMAT 129 cannot register for the one semesterversion as an alternative in the subsequentsemester. Students who registered this waywere viewed as non-compliant.18

Which Math with Which Major? Our handout highlights these selections. Students can always go “higher” in their Mathselection if their CPT or SAT scores support themove—most evident in those majors thatrequire BUS 115 or MAT 101. Remember that RAD.AAS now has a GE Mathgraduation requirement.19

Important Changes in Health TechAdmission Criteria for NRB, RAD, and DHY All three curricula require a minimum GPA of2.75. NRB now requires a grade of at least a “B” inlab biology and lab chemistry. RAD requires a grade of at least a “C” in labbiology and chemistry or physics. If thephysics grade is used the student must stillcomplete CHM 010 if necessary.20

Checking NCWS for the newNursing Guidelines21

GE Changes in Nursing Nursing has two GE electives—one of themmust be a GE Humanities while the secondcan be either a GE Communication or GEDiversity or GE Humanities or GE MST or GESocial Science.22

NJ STARS Primer forJune 2011 Graduates Top 15% of graduating class—2011 graduates are covered fortheir tuition but not their fees. STARS will cover up to 18 credits asemester but students mustregister for at least 12 credits. Students have five semesters ofeligibility to complete a degreeprogram. Students testing intodevelopmental courses areineligible for STARS untilcompletion of these courses. The students with developmentalneeds will have one year at theirown expense to become eligible. Students need a 3.0 by the startof their third semester to remaineligible. Students need a 3.25 upongraduation for STARS II eligibility. Heather Coon is the NJ STARSCoordinator and Jossette Greeneis the NJ STARS Financial AidCoordinator.24

Reminders about FERPA Measures to protect the privacy ofeducational records Students’ rights to inspect and review thoserecords The sharing of certain information Process to follow when parents or friendsaccompany a student Procedures for uncertain situations (contactthe Office of the Registrar)25

College Placement TestExemptions An SAT Verbal or Critical Reading of 540(within the past five years) exempts a studentfrom both the Reading and Essay portions ofthe Placement Test. An SAT Math of 530 (within the past fiveyears) exempts a student from MAT 013.Students are placed into MAT 014 but maychallenge that placement.26

Reviewing the Reading ScoreParameters in the CPT 0-60—RDG 009 61-83—RDG 011 84 or better--No DevelopmentalReading Required A Reading placement can bechallenged once.27

Writing Placement Test Changes English faculty members now read the essay portionof the College Placement Test which, since May 4.2009, is graded on an 8 point scale. This replaced theolder 12 point scale. 0-3 places the student in ENG 009. 4-5 places the student in ENG 010. 6-8 places the student in ENG 121. Students have one hour to complete the essay andare allowed to use scrap paper while taking theexam. No more sentence skills questions.28

Writing Challenge Parameters Students can challenge their writingplacement in one of these two scenarios: They score a 3 on the essay and place out ofRDG 009—they are trying to place out of ENG009. They score a 5 on the essay and place out ofRDG 011—they are trying to place out of ENG010.29

Reviewing theBottom Half of the Math Grid A student with an SAT score of 560-599 is notonly eligible for MAT 116 and MAT 123, butcan now register for MAT 129A withouttaking a precalculus diagnostic test. A student with an SAT score of 600-649 iseligible for MAT 129 without needing tocheck for a high school grade in Algebra II aswe did in the past.30

Challenge Tests for Math For MAT 010, a student remains in the classwith a score of 0-19. The student can obviatethe class with a score of 20-30. For MAT 013, a student remains in the classwith a score of 0-17. The student can obviatethe class with a score of 18-25. For MAT 014, a student remains in the classwith a score of 0-17 but obviates the classwith a score of 18-25. 18-25 will allow MAT116, 123, or 129A.31

More Details to Better Understand thePrecalculus Diagnostic Test A student would take this diagnostic test if her/his SAT mathscore or Accuplacer result placed him/her in MAT 116 or 123or 129A or 129. The MAT 014 challenge can place you ineither 116 or 123 or 129A and so the precalculus diagnosticcan be taken in those instances. A student would not take this test to get credit for a class or tobypass a placement based on a grade in a prior MCC mathclass. 19 or lower places the student in 090/129A. 20-29 places the student in MAT 129. 30-32 places the student in the choice of MAT 131A or MAT131.32

Where is the best place to readthe results of the CPT? TSUM remains the best way to read the results of the CPT andall challenge tests. XSWT is the new Colleague screen that provides both thescores and the placement for students’ results. This is thescreen that mirrors what students see in their WebAdvisoraccounts and on the day of NSO. Very importantly, however, the XSWT screen does NOT provide challenge scores. It is best to steer away from XTRI for CPT scores as that screenhas become confusing and very misleading. It still remainshelpful, however, for high school lab science (BIO 010, CHM010, etc), except for Nursing.33

New Biotechnology TransferCurriculum This A.S. degree replaces the A.A.S. degree which isnow officially “off the books.” It has been designed for a smooth transfer to RutgersUniversity. Dr. Narayan states that students shouldtake one Diversity course within their 9 GE creditsand remember to register for HED 205 rather than150. This articulation agreement will be finalized in thevery near future with the start date for theconstruction of a new biotechnology lab in the nearfuture.40

Chemistry Pre-ProfessionalCPPST.AS One of MCC’s newer majors is recommendedfor students interested in professional healthcareers such as medicine, dentistry, pharmacy,or physical therapy.41

GE or not GE?-That is the Question I In Liberal Arts majors, core humanities andsocial sciencerequirements mustcarry the GEdesignation. Thediversity elective mustalso carry thisdesignation. The divisional electivedoes not need the GEdesignation. Students who major inan LA option (such asLAPSY or LASOC) canutilize non-GE electivestoward theirmajor/concentrationrequirements.42

GE or not GE?-That is the Question II Students who wereadmitted to or changedtheir major prior to theupdate in GEclassification may stillfollow their originalcatalog year tocomplete their degree. This also applies to theGE classification. There can be flexibilityto determine whichcatalog year is best forthe student. However, there can beno “mixing andmatching” betweencatalog years.43

A.S. Majors Starting in Fall 2008, Associate of Sciencemajors require one GE Humanities, one GESocial Science, and the student’s choice ofeither one GE Humanities or one GE SocialScience.44

Computer Science Reminders I Students in both the Computer ScienceInformation Systems (CSI.AAS) and theComputer Science Network Administration(CSNN.AAS) majors should strive for the CSC106 course even though CSC 105 can be taken. CSC 161 and CSC 162 are the requiredIntroduction to Programming Courses for boththe CSI.AAS and CSC.AS majors. CSC 133remains the programming course for theCSNN.AAS major.45

Computer Science Reminders II CSC 133 and 161 have a prerequisite of MAT014. CSC 106 has a prerequisite of MAT 014 andeither CSC 105 or BUS 107. The ComputerScience Department has shared its opinionthat all Middlesex County high school studentshave a sufficient background in MicrosoftOffice to take this course. CSC 106 is the computer course of choice inLA, BUS.AS, BIO.AS, BPPST.AS, BIOTC.AS,CHM.AS, CPPST.AS, MAT.AS, and PHY.AS.46

Health Technology Majors withFinancial Aid—LAGEN or BPPST? When advising financial aid students whocannot be OC, please guide them to LAGENrather than BPPST at the recommendation ofDr. Gerow. Many students in BPPST have donepoorly which severely impacts their GPA and,as a result, makes it even more difficult to beadmitted. If the student believes he/she can truly handlethe course work in BPPST, then that optioncan be discussed.47

Reviewing the Change inPsychosocial Rehabilitation PSR is no longer a competitive admissionsmajor. MAT 116 is the required math course and BIO106 is the required science course. PSY 123, SOC 121, and PHI 123 are among theother required courses. Please note that no PSR course (except for thePSR 101) can be taken before the completionof all developmental courses and 18 collegecredits.48

CHM 010 vs. CHM 020 CHM 010 is the developmental chemistrycourse required for students without theproper grade in high school who areinterested in the various health technologies. CHM 020 is the developmental chemistrycourse required for students without theproper grade in high school who areinterested in the different science transfercurricula.49

Reviewing the BUS. AS Changes Students in BUS. AS register for CSC 105 orCSC 106 with the elimination of BUS 107. A BUS.AS student can now choose either a 3credit or 4 credit GE science.50

Reviewing the MADAD.AAS andMADPH.AAS Changes Students now have their choice of either a GEMath or a GE Science. MAD 102 has been replaced by either MAD104 or ART 124 or ART 125 as these latterthree courses are GE courses. Additionally, there is a new Media Arts--WebDesign Option.51

New Dietetics Transfer Degree Designed to transfer to Rutgers to pursue aB.S. in Nutritional Sciences via the School ofEnvironmental and Biological Sciences. Some of its features (Bio 123 and 124; GeneralChemistry I and II; MAT 129; CSC 106; BIO 211;7 specific HRI courses).52

Reemphasizing theLanguage Diagnostic Test Please remember to place renewed emphasis on thelanguage diagnostic test. If a student wishes to take a modern languagecourse, he/she should always be referred to thediagnostic test unless that student is taking thelanguage for the very first time. In other words, please refer the student to theTesting Center no matter how many years they havestudied the language in high school.53
