Scope of DesignHow Pressure Relief Valves OperateAll pressure relief valves operate by using inletsystem pressure to overcome a spring load. As aresult, the valve can relieve a defined capacity.ClosedSpringDiscact over a larger area, an additional force isavailable to overcome the spring force. By adjustingthe “adjusting ring”, the opening in the secondaryannular orifice can be altered, which controlspressure build-up in chamber (B). This controlledpressure build-up in chamber (B) will overcome thespring force, causing the disc to move away fromthe nozzle seat and the valve to “pop” open.Fully OpenSecondaryAnnular OrificeACWhen the valve is closed during normal operation(see Figure Closed), the spring force resists thevessel pressure acting against the seating surfaces(area A). As vessel pressure increases, the pressureat (A) tends to equalize the spring force and thepressure holding the seats together approacheszero.Partially OpenSecondaryAnnular OrificeChamber BHuddlingChamberDisc HolderAdjustingRingIn vapor or gas service the valve may “simmer”before it will “pop.” When the vessel pressureincreases to within one to two percent of the setpressure, media will audibly move past the seatingsurfaces into Chamber (B) Flow restriction in thesecondary annular orifice causes pressurecan now 2020 Baker Hughes Company. Thisis due to the sudden flow increase and therestriction to flow through another annular orificeformed between the inner edge of the disc holderand the outside diameter of the adjusting ring. These additional forces at (C) cause the disc to liftsubstantially at “pop.”Flow is
