“FROM THE MANAGING DIRECTORThe Corporation will soon open aregional office in Uganda followingapproval by Kenyan and Ugandanregulatory authorities.Mr. Jadiah Mwarania, OGWManaging DirectorThe 4th quarter of 2019 has been very significant inthe Corporation. We have achieved a few milestonesand are very proud for the strides we have taken.The Global Credit Ratings (GCR) announced thereview of Kenya Reinsurance Corporations Limitedunder the new criteria released in May 2019. Thishas seen Kenya Re’s Financial Strength Ratingsrevised to AA as compared to ratings of AAin 2018 with a stable outlook. Furthermore, theCorporation’s international strength ratings havebeen revised to a rating of B in 2019 from arating of BB in 2018 with a stable outlook. Theratings of the Corporation have been supportedby a very strong risk-adjusted capitalization dueto adequately catering for the relatively stablequantum of insurance market and credit risk.The higher ratings are attributable to healthyliquidity, supported by the adoption of balancedasset allocation with liquid assets representing 53%of the total investment portfolio. The rise in ratingshas also been credited to liquidity coverage of nettechnical liabilities and operational cash coverageremaining fairly stable over the last three years.The Corporation was further ranked as the 6thmost gender inclusive Company in the Countryin the Gender Equality Report that was releasedin November 2019. The Corporation comes in 6thplace amongst other listed companies.Further across in our subsidiaries, we held differentcustomer engagements activities to appreciate ourmarkets and offer our support. In Cote D’Ivoire wehad a successful market cocktail. In Zambia we alsohad another market cocktail that culminated to acorporate golf tournament at the Lusaka golf club.It gives me great pleasure to announce that weofficially flagged off our Niko Fiti Caravan on the14th of November 2019. I am proud to say thatthis years’ campaign impacted over beneficiaries1,500 people in 4 counties namely Machakos, Kitui,Baringo and Nakuru. This brings it to a total ofover 6,800 beneficiaries since inception in 2011.We also officially handover the Moi Girls’ Isinyaand Lenana School Niko Fiti PWD EducationIntegration Program. Both schools were aidedwith some modification of their existing facilitiesmaking them accessible to students with disability.The interventions included refurbishments of thedormitory washrooms and common areas andconversion to disability friendly state, constructionof ramps, placement of murram paths to easeaccess to various points in the school. This will goa long way to ensure that there is more inclusivityof those living with disability in National Schools.In a bid to improve our environmental space, theCorporation also carried out a tree planting exerciseat the Moi Girls’ School in Isinya. Collectively theCorporation planted a total number of 5,000 treeseedlings.It has been a fruitful 4th quarter for the Corporationand as always we strive to put our best foot forwardas we end the year. The theme of this our teambuilding was “Pamoja Twaweza” and it broughtstaff together to share, interact, understand andforge the way ahead for the vision of the companythrough the various activities that were lined up.Kenya Re’s flagship CSR initiative dubbed NikoFiti Na Kenya Re made tremendous strides in this4th quarter of the year. We were able to penetrate4 counties namely Kitui, Machakos, Baringo andNakuru. The Corporation touched and transformedthe lives of over 1,500 beneficiaries throughdonation of various assistive and mobility devicesbringing the total number of beneficiaries over6,800 since the inception of the initiative in 2011.The Niko Fiti CSR initiative continues to keepAbility Beyond Disability at the forefront of all ourdistributions and activities.These were just some of the activities in the fourthquarter but the magazine is full of articles touchingon various sectors of the economy that I believeis a good read.As we conclude the year I would like to wish allour readers a Merry Christmas and a prosperousnew year. The Niko Fiticampaign is the Corporation’s flagship CSR initiativethat focuses on empowering persons living withdisability. The initiative set out to make an impactin both Machakos and Kitui County where personsliving with disability received special assistive andmobility devices. The 2019 Caravan was flaggedof by the Kenya Reinsurance Corporation MD MrJadiah Mwarania in the presence of the campaign’smedia partner, Nation Media Group and RoyalMedia Services and the Kenya Re staff.The Corporation partnered with the Associationof Physically Disabled of Kenya (APDK) tohelp identify those in need within the variouscounties. Machakos County was the first county tobenefit from the distribution that took place atthe Machakos Level 5 hospital while the seconddistribution was carried out in Kitui County at theKitui Referral hospital on the 15th of November2019. About 7-10% of Kitui County’s populationconsists of persons living with disability. The areaconsists of very limited rehabilitation centershence the Corporation’s interest in helping thosewith disability in the region.Hilder Wambua, a beneficiary of the Niko FitiInitative from Machakos thanked Kenya Re for thedevice and wonderful initiative by the Corporation.“This marks a very special day in my life as IBy Edwin Muthabukuhave received a wheelchair from the Niko Fiti CSRinitiative. I am grateful for this as it will help memove to and from my new ICT internship. I nolonger need to depend on people to get from onepoint to another and this is all because of KenyaRe. Niko Fiti na Kenya Re!”In Kitui Hilary Mwendwa, a husband and father oftwo expressed how the device he received willimpact his life positively. “I do not see this newdevice as just a tricycle but my new set of legs.I am a tailor who has to travel 15km to get mymaterial, this journey will now be made easier. Ican save on transport costs and purchase morematerial that will help me produce more productsthat will help me take care of my wife and two kids.Asante sana Kenya Re!”Through our previous caravans that toured differentparts of Kenya between 2011 and 2017, we managedto give out various assistive and mobility devicessuch as Polio boots, mobile vending machines,tricycles, wheel chairs, crutches, white canes,special seats and other assorted orthopedic items.The initiative achieved its goals in both countiesand received endless blessings and well wishesfrom the beneficiaries and their Families. Niko Fiti PictorialNIKO FITI LIGHTS UPLIVES OF PWDS INBARINGO & NAKURUThe second phase of the Niko Fiti Na Kenya ReCSR initiative made its way down to Baringoand Nakuru Counties respectively. The Baringodistribution took place on the 28th Of November2019 at the Marigat Sub County Hospital whereover 700 PWDS received various devices that rangefrom special seats, polio boots, crutches, amongstother items ranging from wheel chairs, white canesand other assorted orthopedic items.The initiative made its final distribution of theyear at the Nakuru Level 5 hospital in NakuruCounty. The CSR initiative has impacted thelives of over 1500 persons living with disabilityin 4 counties namely Machakos, Kitui, Baringo &Nakuru. The beneficiaries across the 4 countiesreceived devices such as special seats, polio boots,crutches, tricycles, wheel chairs, white canes andother assorted orthopedic items bringing the totalnumber of beneficiaries to 6,800 since inceptionin 2011.As the world inched closer to the World DisabilityDay that was on the 3rd of December 2019 KenyaRe Ag. Corporate Affairs Manager Mrs. Sylvia Karimiurged the beneficiaries to champion the Niko Fitimessage. “As we inch closer to the world disabilityday which will be on the 3rd of December 2019 Iurge the beneficiaries present here today; to bethe Niko Fiti champions as you return to yourhomes. We have heard stories of many otherpersons living with disability being locked in theirhomes and such. I urge you all to be our brandambassadors and champion the message of abilitybeyond disability. For the Special Report, Equileap usedits proprietary Gender Equality Scorecard of319 criteria (including gender balance across theworkforce, the gender pay gap, paid parental leaveand anti-sexual harassment policies).The report was launched by the Chief AdministrativeSecretary of the Ministry of Public Service, Youthand Gender Affairs, Rachel Shebesh.This recognition goes a long way in showing theCorporation’s commitment towards adherenceto its Gender mainstreaming policy that ensuresconsistent integration of Gender concerns intothe designs, implementations, monitoring andevaluation of policies, plans, programs, activitiesand projects at all levels of the Corporation. The conditions were perfect for capturingon camera the action on the greens. The expectedturnout was 120 participants and by lunchtime itwas evident that we would exceed our plans. Wehad a total of 144 players by the end of the day!An amazing turnout and a clear vote of confidencefrom the local market. This year the polo shirts werered and so were the men’s caps but the ladies hadstylish, blue sun hats with a broad circumference.The prize giving ceremony was preceded bywelcome remarks by the Acting Corporate AffairsManager, Mrs. Sylvia Karimi as well as a few wordsfrom the club captain. The Managing Director Mr.Jadiah Mwarania gave an overview of the businessperformance for the Zambian subsidiary andKenya Reinsurance as a whole. Zambia wasmarked by an impressive turn out for the annualKenya Re. Market Cocktail in Zambia. The 2019event was privileged to have the newly appointedRegistrar of the Pensions and Insurance Authority(PIA) Mr. Christopher Mapani give the key notespeech. The insurance market representatives wereparticularly attentive to his speech because thiswas his first public engagement as PIA Registrar.The Registrar recognized the challenges theindustry has encountered in the past such as lowmarket penetration and the lack of domesticationof insurance business. He also made reference tothe Insurance Act which is pending amendmentand said our market was in need of unlocking itspotential and this challenge to increase insuranceuptake and localize reinsurance was a challengefor all market participants.The Group Managing Director Mr. Jadiah Mwaraniafocused his speech on thanking the governmentof the Republic of Zambia and the regulatoryauthorities for fostering an environment whichis helpful to business development. He alsohighlighted the areas which are a threat to thegrowth of the industry across African marketssuch as risk based supervision, capital and ratingrequirements and ownership structures. In additionthe regulator, PIA, The Insurers Association ofZambia (IAZ), local reinsurance brokers and otherreinsurers were present. The 2019 external auditorsfor Kenya Re. Zambia, Ernst and Young also had arepresentative. All guests were actively exchanginglively conversations and ideas.The Kenya Re. Zambia Limited 2019 MarketCocktail was hailed as a success and we thank allcooperating partners for their support.The Board Chairman Mr. Patrick Wanjelani spokeabout the role of the Zambia subsidiary instrengthening ties with key stakeholders withinthe region. Not onlyis it meant to gather valuable customer insight butalso helps companies progress to improvementsthat lead to reduced costs, increased profitabilityand increased customer satisfaction.The CAJ deals with maladministration in the publicsector, “such as unreasonable delay, administrativeinjustice, discourtesy or misconduct, incompetenceor ineptitude, misbehavior in public administration,improper or prejudicial conduct, manifest injustice,abuse of power, unlawful, oppressive, unfairtreatment or unresponsive official conduct andfailure to adhere to the constitutional principlesthat all sovereign authority of the state is drawnfrom the people.
