ENGAGE CHALLENGE NURTUREBETHA MACCLAINSUPERINTEND ENTBOARD OF TRUSTEESPRESTON ADDISONBRANDON AXELLJACQUE GARRISONTODD LANDSCECILE PETERSJuly 29, 2020Dear Cloverdale Unified School District Families,This has been an exceptionally challenging time and I would like to thank you for your patience as we createreopening plans based on guidance from state and local officials, teachers, staff, and all of you. Yourparticipation in our surveys, as well as community input on our Reopening Committee, have been invaluableas we strive to create a plan that addresses the needs and priorities of our whole community.DRAFTAs you now know, we will open the school year with Distance Learning (DL), but it will not be the sameversion of Distance Learning that was provided from mid-March to the end of the last school year. We havenow had time to deliberately prepare. We have been training, collaborating, and planning for a rigorous, structured program that aligns with our expectations and standards for a “normal” school year. We will haveschedules that are similar to a traditional school day, including daily routines and live instruction. We willtake daily attendance, assign grades, and address the needs of students who are not participating or needadditional support. We hope to move from Distance Learning to a hybrid model that allows for a mixture ofin-class and DL, with classes at approximately half the usual in-person capacity to allow for social distancing. We are also creating an extended Distance Learning or “virtual academy” option for families that need tokeep students home due to medical needs or high-risk family members. Our goal is to keep our structures andinstructional models as aligned as possible so that moving from one model to another will be smooth, efficient, and easy to accomplish for families, students, and staff. In this Reopening Plan you will find information on what school will look like when we return via DistanceLearning on August 18, 2020, as well sample schedules, instructional plans, information on social-emotionalhealth and wellness, cleaning and disinfecting measures, and personal protection mandates. Our first priority is the health and wellbeing of our students, staff and families. It is our priority to fully openschools for students, but only when it is safe to do so. We will continue to follow the State and HealthDepartment requirements for reopening. Please watch for district updates through our Aeries communicationsystem and on our district website: cusd.org .Sincerely,Betha MacClainSuperintendent97 SCHOOL STREET CLOVERDALE, CA 95425 PHONE 707.894.1920 FAX 707.894.1922Draft 1.0 Page 3

Cloverdale Unified School District Reopening Plan: IntroductionGovernor Gavin Newsom recently provided new state guidance for schools and standards for reopening, which impacts our schooldistrict’s plans for the upcoming 2020-2021 school year. This R eopening Plan is our roadmap for a successful school year. As wenear the beginning of the school year, CUSD will continue to provide regular updates. Thank you for your ongoing patience andunderstanding during these challenging and quickly-changing times. Together, we will provide our children with the besteducation possible.Beginning the New School Year with Distance LearningOn Friday, July 17th, Governor Newsom announced that any school district within a county that is on the state’s Covid 19“watch/monitoring” list will not be able to open for in-person learning until they are off the list for at least 14 days. We know thatSonoma county will be on the list until at least Aug. 2. That means the earliest that we, or any Sonoma County district, can open forin-person instruction would be August 14. Given the difficulty for families and schools to plan for all of the unknowns and anever-changing timeline, our school district made the determination to begin the school year with Distance Learning beginning onTuesday, August 18th, 2020.AFTWe will begin to reassess our status on September 25th, with the hope of returning to in-person or Hybrid Instruction on October19, the first day of the second quarter. To learn more about ongoing reopening plans, please visit our school district website atcusd.org. The updated website has a new tab called School Reopening . We have also added a page of Covid 19 Resources . Thesecan both be accessed near the top of our homepage.DRAn overview of our teaching and learning program is provided in this Reopening Plan, which includes information on the following: TK - Grade 12 instruction via synchronous (live) and asynchronous (independent) instruction Potential models and options that include Regular, consistent contact with CUSD teachers and support staff Contact with teachers 5 days per week Class meetings, teacher Office Hours, small groups, and 1-to-1 support Curriculum that is consistent with California Grade Level Standards and our district Promise Standards Grading, attendance, and reengagement plans Wellness and Social-Emotional Learning Accommodations and support services for English Learners, students with IEPs, and students who need additionalintervention Health and Safety plans Ongoing breakfast and lunch service via “grag and go” prepared meals Internet access (information and support for access available) District digital devices provided, if neededGiven the quickly changing nature of the COVID 19 pandemic, we expect that plans will continue to change. We will keep youupdated with our plans as they evolve. We hope to provide families with support for helping your children understand thepandemic, as well as what to expect in the next few weeks and months. CUSD teachers, administrators, and other school staff arepreparing a strong Distance Learning program and, because we were already preparing for virtual learning, we are well-preparedto respond to the state’s new requirements regarding access, support, accountability, and rigor. Please note that this Reopening Plan must be negotiated and approved by employee unions (CSEA and TAC) and must beapproved by the Governing Board, which may impact details within the plan. However, this will not impact the quality ofthe instructional program or the safety of our school sites.Draft 1.0 Page 8
