What are the layers of theEarth? What are the characteristicsof each layer?

The Composition of Earth The Earth is divided into severallayers with different composition andphysical properties. Composition: Earth’s layers aremade of different mixtures ofelements. Physical Properties: Temperature, density, and viscosity (ability to flow).

The Composition of Earth The Earth can be divided into threelayers by the composition of eachlayer. These three layers are the CRUST,MANTLE, and CORE.

The Composition of Earth The lightest materials make upthe outermost layer. The moredense material make up the innerlayer.

The Crust The outermost layer Ranging from 5-100 km thick Thinnest layer of Earth – less than 1%of the Earth’s mass Least Dense Temperature ranges from 20 C to870 C. Made of two layers.

The Crust Top layer is primarily granite. Bottomlayer is primarily basalt. Two types of crust: Continental andOceanic. Both layers found under continents. Only basalt layer under the oceans.

Continental Makes up Earth’scontinents. Thickest layer ofthe Earth’s crust. Least Dense. Compositionsimilar to Granite.vs. Oceanic Crust Makes up theocean floor. Not as thick ascontinental crust. More dense thancontinental crust. Compositionsimilar to Basalt.

Mantle The layer of Earth beneath the crustis called the mantle. Approximately 67% of Earth’s massis found in this layer. The top boundary, the MOHO, ismade up of solid rock. In the centerof the mantle, the rock is viscous.itflows like syrup.

Mantle Scientists have been able toexamine the molten rock fromactive ocean volcanoes to gathermost information about this layer. It is made up mostly of iron andmagnesium. Temperatures range from 870 C to2200 C.

Core The core extends from the bottom ofthe mantle to the center of the Earth. Approximately 33% of the Earth’smass. This layer is divided into two parts:the liquid outer core and the solidinner core.

Core The diameter of Mars is almost thesame as the diameter of the Earth’score. The core is responsible for theEarth’s magnetic field. Temperatures range from 2200 C to5000 C.

The Mechanical LayersLook At My Old Chevy & Isuzu Car. The Earth can be divided into fivemain mechanical layers. These five layers are the:Lithosphere, Asthenosphere,Mesosphere, Outer Core, andInner Core.

The Lithosphere (LOOK) The outermost, rigid layer of theEarth. Made of two parts: the crust andthe Moho (upper solid part of themantle). Divided into pieces called tectonicplates.

The Asthenosphere (AT) The soft layer of the mantle onwhich the lithospheric platesmove. It is made of solid rock like puttythat flows very slowly – about thesame rate your fingernail grows.

The Mesosphere/Mantle (MY) The strong, lower part of themantle. The middle layer. Extends to the Earth’s core.

Outer Core (OLD CHEVY) The outer core extends from thebottom of the mantle and surroundsthe inner core. Hot! It is approximately 2,270 kilometersthick. It is a liquid. It is composed of liquid iron andnickel.

Inner Core (ISUZU CAR) 1216 kilometers thick Solid (Due to pressure from upperlayers.) Composed of iron. Hotter than the Sun!!

A drilling rig can dig down 6kilometers. What layer of Earthwould you more than likely bein?

Which type of crust iscomposed of mostlybasalt?
