Halloween FactsHalloween, also known as Allhalloween, All Hallows' Eve, orAll Saints' Eve, is a yearly celebration in many countriesdedicated to remembering the dead. Today, it is a muchmore festive celebration and a lot of fun for parents andkids alike. Halloween began in Ireland’s Celtic culture. November1, was New Year according to the Druid’s religiouscalendar. The celebration actually began the nightbefore on October 31st. On this night all the spiritswho had died in the prior year, would roam the earth onthis night. The Celtic people began wearing masks andcostumes to avoid being recognized as human.

Halloween Facts This was considered an evil night when spirits roamedthe streets and villages. Lord Samhain, the lord ofDarkness, would arrive in search of the spirits to takethem to the underworld. Today, Halloween is more festive for a lot of people. Itis celebrated with costumes, decorations,trick-or-treating, and parties. Halloween was commonly referred to as “All Hollows”Eve. It originated from the pagan holiday honoring thedead. The Roman Catholic Church created All SaintsDay (also called Hallomas) on November 1st to honorSaints and All Souls Day on November 2nd to honorand pray for the souls of the dead. These holidays werecreated by the church, in part to downplay the paganholiday of Halloween.

Halloween Facts Orange and black are the main Halloween colors becauseorange is associated with the Fall harvest and black isassociated with darkness and death. Jack o’ Lanterns originated in Ireland where peopleplaced candles in hollowed-out turnips to keep awayspirits and ghosts on the holiday. Halloween was brought to North America by immigrantsfrom Europe who would celebrate the harvest around abonfire, share ghost stories, sing, dance and tellfortunes. Halloween candy sales average about 2 billion dollarsannually in the United States. Chocolate candy bars topthe list as the most popular candy for trick-or-treaterswith Snickers #1. Halloween is the 2nd most commercially successfulholiday, with Christmas being the first. Black cats were once believed to be witch’s familiars whoprotected their powers.
