Carlo DOMENICONI (b. 1947)Concerto Mediterraneo, Op. 67 Oyun TrilogyToccata in blue ChaconneConcerto Mediterraneo, Op. 67for two guitars and large orchestraThe longing to live in a world in which natureis respected and its beauty recognised as vitalto human life prompted Carlo Domeniconi tocompose a concerto for two guitars and orchestra. His experience of witnessing the degradation ofthe Mediterranean Sea, its coastal environmentsand marine habitats, awakened in him the needto write music that is above all ‘beautiful and freefrom poisons’. Domeniconi is aware that he isthereby conveying only an apparent solution, adream, yet he believes in the reality of desire.Although he has lived in Berlin for many years, the composer, who was born in 1947 in Cesenain Northern Italy, retains a close relationship withthe culture of the Mediterranean. He spent threeyears in Turkey and has taught classical guitar atthe conservatory in Istanbul. Many of his worksmake reference more or less directly to thetraditions and customs of Mediterranean culture. The writing of the solo parts for two guitarsis inevitably suggested by the geographicalassociation with a cultural region where pluckedinstruments (guitars, oud, saz, bouzouki) havea distinctive musical function. Formally, thework follows the traditional concerto structurewith two faster outer movements. The Concerto Mediterraneo was premieredon 27 May 1994 at the Schauspielhaus Berlinby the Amadeus Guitar Duo. The performanceon this recording is by the Staatskapelle Halle, conducted by Marc Piollet.Oyunfor two guitars and string orchestraIn Turkish, Oyun means ‘game’ or ‘dance’. Thisconcerto for two guitars and string orchestraconsists of four short movements, the first ofwhich serves as an introduction. The followingthree movements correspond to the classicalmodel of fast–slow–fast, although the finalmovement Con fuoco acquires its tempo notso much through speed as through force. Theslow middle movement is the most ‘Western’ ofthe three: here harmony plays a very importantrole. The first movement is a true hybrid, bearing characteristics of both cultures.Oyun was premiered on 5 June 2001at Heidelberg Castle by the AmadeusGuitar Duo together with the MannheimKurpfälzisches Chamber Orchestra, conductedby Jiří Malát.

TrilogyChaconneTrilogy originated as an improvisation bythe composer, who enjoys an internationalreputation as a guitarist. The work demands anunusual tuning of the six strings of the guitar:C–G–D–A–B–D (normal tuning: E–A–D–G–B–E), which gives it a particularly deep, warmand floating tone. The piece was scored bythe composer only in fragments and demandsfrom interpreters a great deal of imaginativeimprovisation.Of his Chaconne based on Bach, the composerwrites: ‘Among the many transcriptions forguitar, the Chaconne from the D minor Partita,BWV 1004 for solo violin by Johann SebastianBach has a special place. The present piece isby no means meant to be an alternative. It arosefrom the same need as do all my compositionsfor guitar: to give this instrument a new work.“My” Chaconne consists of predominantlythe same rhythms, the same harmonies andnumber of variations as Bach’s. It is, so tospeak, the Bach Chaconne with interchangednotes. This composition fits into no pigeonhole, and I am certain it will delight somemusicians (first of all Dale Kavanagh, whowitnessed its emergence and strengthenedme in the resolve to write it), but also perhapsirritate many. In the latter case, I would like toapologise and ask for their understanding.’for guitar soloToccata in bluefor guitar soloToccata in blue is an extremely virtuosic piece, full of energy, melancholy and pensiveness. It reflects, according to the composer, thestriking characteristics of the dedicatee, DaleKavanagh, and appears to be tailor-madefor her, both technically and musically. Thework, composed in ABA form, begins with anascending bass scale, reminiscent of boogiewoogie, an allusion to the North Americanroots of the interpreter, while the middle partalso contains motifs of American blues.for guitar soloThomas-Friedrich KirchhoffTranslation: Jonathan Uhlaner

Fascination of the Guitar: The Amadeus Guitar DuoCanadian Dale Kavanagh and her German partner Thomas Kirchhoff have recently celebratedtheir 25th anniversary as the Amadeus Guitar Duo and are today regarded as one of thepre-eminent international guitar duos, receiving enthusiastic reviews from critics around the world.Having enjoyed great success, with more than 80 concerts annually, as an unaccompanied duo,Kavanagh and Kirchhoff decided to expand their repertoire to include that for guitar and orchestra. This genre has gained in popularity, thanks in no small part to their efforts, and their recent ‘SpanishNight’ tour, featuring concertos for one, two and four guitars and orchestra by Joaquín Rodrigo, covered more than 100 cities. The Amadeus Guitar Duo has to date performed over 1,300 concerts all over the world, andare renowned for their exuberant temperament, virtuoso performance, sensitive interpretationsand warm guitar tone. The two artists’ stirring commitment andinspired playing style have enabled them to considerably broaden the repertoire for guitar, andespecially for guitar and orchestra. Renowned composers including Harald Genzmer, GheorgheZamfir, Roland Dyens, Jaime Zenamon, Christian Jost, Carlo Domeniconi, Gerald Garcia andMartin Herchenröder have written orchestral concertos for them, and they have had compositionsfor two guitars dedicated to them by composers including Stephen Dodgson, Harald Genzmer,Jaime Zenamon and Christian Jost.In 1992 the Duo founded the International Guitar Symposium (IGS) in Iserlohn, Germany, todayregarded as one of the most important festivals of its kind in Europe. The IGS boasts more than 300participants from more than 50 countries, concerts featuring world-famous stars, masterclasses, lectures, exhibitions and many other activities. Carlo Domeniconi retains a close relationship with the culture of the Mediterranean whose traditionsand customs permeate the Concerto Mediterraneo, Op. 67 in which the two guitars evoke NorthAfrican and Middle Eastern plucked instruments such as the oud and the saz. Domeniconi’s prestigeas an internationally esteemed guitarist informs Oyun, a vivacious and true hybrid of Turkish andWestern influences, while Trilogy demands both unusual tuning and imaginative improvisation fromthe performer. Full of virtuosity, energy and pensive melancholy, Toccata in blue embodies allusionsto boogie-woogie and the blues.CarloDOMENICONIConcerto Mediterraneo,Op. 67 (1993) *123for two guitars andlarge orchestraI. Quasi Monte Carlo has been developed. While the convergence rate of classical Monte Carlo (MC) is O(n¡1 2), the convergence rate of Quasi Monte Carlo (QMC) can be made almost as high as O(n¡1). Correspondingly, the use of Quasi Monte Carlo is increasing, especially in the areas where it most readily can be employed. 1.1 Classical Monte Carlo
