Software Project Management – Lab ManualObjectives: Software Project Management LabThe Software Project Management Lab provides a deep insight into the importance of project planning inthe software industry. It will enable us to learn the MS Project tool employed which makes the process ofproject planning easy to understand and implement.At its core, project management is simply the planning, organizing and managing of tasks and resourcesto accomplish a defined objective, usually with constraints on time and cost. Most projects, whether theyare large and complex or small and simple, can be planned by breaking the project into small, easilymanageable tasks, scheduling the tasks, and then tracking the tasks as work progresses.Project management helps you answer questions such as:What is to be done?Who will complete the task?When must it be done?How much will it cost?What happens if work isn’t completed on time?Typically, project management involves three major activities: Planning the project and creating a scheduleThis includes defining the tasks and their duration, setting up relationships between tasks, and trackingresource usage, assigning resources. ALL later phases of the project are based directly on the informationprovided when the first plan is created for the project. Managing changesThis is an ongoing process that begins once the schedule is created and the project starts, and ends whenthe project is complete. It includes tracking and adjusting the schedule to reflect changes that occur as theproject progresses. Communicating project informationThis is a very important process that involves communicating project information to clients, project staff,and management.Project management software is productivity software that will assist in each of these steps. Manyprofessionals find it is among the most productive tools in their skill set. Some Information Systemsprofessionals will find it essential to their jobs while many others will use it only on an occasional basis.Page 3

The students should be able to consolidate and communicate information about their projectsefficiently. They will be able to create Gantt charts and PERT (Project Evaluation Review Technique) chartof their project. They will be able to manage resources, assignments, work allocation and generate reports toassess project status, project cost status and resource utilization. They will be able to identify factors affecting the critical path of their project.Page 4

During the semester a CASE STUDY will be completelysolved in the lab classes with the assistance of the Instructor. They should have at least one meeting in a week with the faculty for the assessment of their workprogress. The students should meet the faculty with the formal documents and proper presentationsprepared of their work till date. Every student should always be prepared for a viva-voice or presentation of his or her work. Regularity and sincerity will be taken into consideration while evaluating the students.Page 6
